Chapter 84: The Mad Scientist
"YOU BASTARD!! I’M GONNA KILL YOU!!" Dennis screamed, blindly charging at the masked assassin.
’Mmmm... is that Dennis’s voice? If he is back already, that must mean Emily is back too,’ Emma thought dizzily, still lying in the dirt from where she was slapped.
She slowly fluttered her eyes open, only to be met with a horrifying sight. Dion’s severed head was lying in the dirt right in front of her face.
"..."
Emma just stared at it, unable to speak. Her hands started shaking violently as thick tears flooded her eyes. "D... Dion..." she whimpered, covering her mouth as she broke down crying.
"I’m so sorry..." she sobbed, recent memories of Dion standing in front of her to protect her from the old masked man surfacing in her mind.
"Hey!! Hey, Emma!! Are you okay?!" Emily yelled, dropping to her knees and desperately trying to help Emma stand up.
"He killed her..." Emma said slowly, her voice hollow. "And she was only trying to protect me... we could have run away safely a long time ago if I didn’t urge them to stop and wait for you. sniff... It’s totally my fault..." Emma rambled, her mind fracturing from the guilt.
’She is completely shaken by her death,’ Emily thought, looking at her twin sister with deep concern.
Emily quickly looked over her shoulder. ’She is not the only one, though. Even Monkey is blinded by anger.’ She watched as Dennis furiously attacked the old man with a flurry of heavy punches. But the old man was effortlessly dodging every single strike with his hands behind his back.
’What is that man up to? He isn’t even fighting back, he is only dodging. But at least he is only focusing on Dennis for some reason. That gives me a few seconds of time,’ Emily thought rapidly.
She turned to the terrified maid standing behind her. "Melly, I need you to take Emma with you and get out of this place right now," Emily ordered firmly.
Melly, eyes wide with fear, just nodded in understanding.
"Wait... w—what about y—you?" Emma stammered, seeing the deadly serious look on Emily’s face.
"Stop worrying about me for a second and just do what I tell you, okay?" Emily said, signaling Melly to step forward.
Melly gently took Emma’s hand to pull her up, but Emma suddenly yanked her arm away. "No! I’m not leaving you— aah!!"
Before Emma could finish her sentence, Emily swiftly struck her directly on the back of the neck. Emma’s eyes rolled back, and she instantly fainted into Emily’s arms.
"What can we even do together to that monster? Even I myself am so scared right now... but I can at least die feeling better knowing that you are safe," Emily whispered, holding her unconscious sister. She carefully passed her over to the maid. "I’m sorry to trouble you like this, Melly."
"It’s okay, Young Miss. It’s no trouble at all," Melly said quietly, hauling the unconscious Emma onto her back. Without looking back, the maid sprinted away into the dark woods, following the dirt road away from the estate.
Knowing Emma was finally safe, Emily turned back to the fight.
"Stay still, you damn old man!!" Dennis yelled, still fiercely charging and swinging his fists.
"Ha-ha-ha! I just can’t help myself, though! The desperate look on your face is just so marvelous!" 10 laughed mockingly.
Suddenly, 10 tilted his head slightly. "Hmmm... did you honestly think a cheap sneak attack would work on me, little missy?"
10 snapped his head back, easily spotting Emily silently rushing up behind him, thrusting a full-power punch toward his spine.
Instantly, 10 coated his entire body in a suffocating, thick red Aura. He completely vanished from his spot, effortlessly dodging Emily’s strike.
Before either of them could even blink, he appeared directly behind Dennis.
"Blame the young missy for interrupting my fun. Now I have to get serious," 10 whispered into Dennis’s ear.
Just after saying that, 10 ruthlessly kicked Dennis squarely in the back.
CRACK!
The sickening sound of bones shattering echoed loudly as Dennis was sent flying through the air, violently crashing into the heavy stone wall of the estate. He slumped to the ground, completely motionless.
"MONKEY!!!" Emily screamed, turning to run toward him.
"Where do you think you are going, missy?" 10 suddenly appeared right in front of Emily, still covered in his terrifying red Aura. He casually drove his fist directly into her stomach.
"Gah!" Emily gagged, falling hard onto her knees as the breath left her lungs.
"What’s up with you people and your bodies?" 10 muttered, suddenly looking down at his fist and testing his knuckles. "Even though my body is completely covered in a Fourth-Stage Aura... I actually felt pain in my knuckles when I punched you."
He looked down curiously at Emily, who was kneeling in the dirt, violently coughing up blood.
"Hmmm..."
He deactivated his red Aura, slowly crouched down in front of her, and suddenly grabbed the hem of her shirt, pulling it up to inspect her stomach.
"Hey!!!" Emily gasped, desperately trying to struggle and push him away.
SNAP!!
"Aaaaaahhhhh!!!" Emily screamed in agony.
"Shut up. I have grandkids if my iwn, so I know where to draw my limits," 10 warned coldly, having casually snapped her left arm like a twig. "If you struggle any further, I will just break the other one, or I might ’slip’ and just kill you right now."
Emily gritted her teeth, tears streaming down her face, forcing herself to stay still.
10 lifted her shirt and stared at her stomach. The exact spot where he had just delivered, an Aura-infused punch was completely fine. There wasn’t a single bruise, cut, or mark in sight.
"Fascinating. I have seen many weird things in my long life, but this is a first..." 10 murmured, his eyes wide with morbid curiosity behind his mask.
He suddenly pressed his fingers firmly against her unmarked skin.
"Mmmmm!!!" Emily groaned in intense pain.
"I see... so your internal ribs are completely shattered, but your outer skin looks completely fine," he analyzed, his voice shifting from an assassin to a fascinated scholar.
"Did it heal instantly, or did I not even damage the skin at all? Were you born with this mutation, or is it an ancient physical technique? Maybe it’s a secret family heirloom? Is this the real reason your family can’t feel mana? But that girl outside did it too, and that boy I kicked... his skin was also abnormally tough..."
Number 10 started pacing back and forth, mumbling rapidly to himself, completely holding his chin in deep thought.
"No... no... no... Freddie, you are not a scientist anymore. You are a prisoner. You should just be doing your assassination job so that those guys don’t touch your family..." he scolded himself, aggressively shaking his head to calm his racing thoughts.
’What the hell is up with him? Is he really crazy or something?’ Emily thought through the blinding pain of her broken arm and shattered ribs, staring up at the rambling old man.
"But my curiosity... I just can’t stop it," he groaned, literally pulling his own hair in frustration. "Maybe just for ten minutes. I bet the Guild won’t mind at all if I’m a little late. Yes... yes... it’s just ten minutes. They won’t mind at all!"
He started laughing manicly. He quickly turned back to Emily, a terrifyingly serious look returning to his eyes.
"Young Miss, would you like to assist this old man in a little scientific research?" 10 suddenly asked politely, staring straight at her. "Ohhh... what am I even saying? Hahaha... I was supposed to kill you anyway!" he chuckled, rubbing the back of his head.
’Yep. He really is completely crazy...’ Emily thought, her heart pounding.
"Well, Young Miss, I can make a rare exception just for you, you see. If my experiment goes well, and you don’t fight back... I can actually let you live. It’s a very good deal, don’t you think?"
’If I don’t fight back? What the hell is he planning to do?’ Emily panicked. She glanced over at Dion’s headless body lying in the dirt. ’He is gonna kill me anyway if I refuse. Maybe I can actually survive this if I just do whatever he wants and stall for time.’
"Hurry it up! I ain’t got all day! I got a really crazy teenage girl who is incharge so if she catches me doing this it’s over." he snapped impatiently.
"Fine!!" she cried out. ’And who is more crazy than you?’
"Wonderful! I was gonna force you anyway if you didn’t agree," he smiled cheerfully. Reaching into his cloak, he pulled out a long, terrifying syringe filled with a glowing green liquid.
"What is that?!" Emily asked, shrinking back in horror.
"Oooh... this? It’s just a small injection that makes sure you don’t go to sleep during our experiment," he said softly.
Without any warning, he aggressively grabbed her by the jaw and plunged the thick needle directly into her throat, injecting the glowing green fluid.
"It would be a terrible shame if you fainted from the shock during this process. Besides, researchers always get the absolute best results from their experiments if the subject is fully awake to feel it, ain’t I right?" he whispered.
"You... you carry something like that around during your assassination jobs?" she gasped, her whole body starting to violently shake and burn as the heavy stimulant flooded her veins.
"Of course! You never know when you will meet a truly fascinating specimen like yourself."
Emily’s uninjured arm trembled in pure terror.
"Now, while the sensory stimulant is taking full effect, let’s start with checking if your eye can harden just like your skin," he said, casually pulling out his hunting dagger.
"What?! I can assure you that it doesn’t harden!!" she screamed, completely panicking as he brought the blade closer.
"How would we know for sure if we don’t try?" he smiled warmly.
"I just told you it doesn’t— AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!"
Emily let out a bloodcurdling, agonizing scream that echoed into the sky the exact moment he brutally plunged the dagger straight into her left eye.
