Chapter 285: Ch 285: Secret Weapon
"You... What are you on about...?"
Rin felt like he understood the nonsense the system was spouting, but he did not have enough mental capacity to deal with it. Not with the task still ongoing.
So he gritted his teeth and focused on the task at hand. The monster growled before turning toward Rin and rushing at him.
"It’s rushing toward the base! Stop that boss at all costs!"
Someone yelled, and Rin noticed both Shelly and Albus struggling against the boss while trying their best to avoid getting hurt.
But the boss was far too powerful, and it dragged the pair behind it toward Rin with the single purpose of devouring him whole.
Rin tried to open the system window to drop more bombs on the boss, but his body refused to comply. It was telling him that he urgently needed rest. But that was simply not possible.
’Darn it! Move! I can’t just sit still and wait for death to come to me!’
Rin yelled inside his mind, causing the system to appear in front of him once more.
[Rookie, you look desperate. Let me show you how you can deal with a monster like this easily.]
The system spoke before taking control of his limbs.
Rin raised his hand, and before he knew it, the boss rushing toward him disintegrated.
[See? This is the kind of power the system is promising you. So there is no need to hesitate. Grab the offered hand and take the power. All you have to do in return is forget your memories and embrace the system.]
The system tried to sweet-talk Rin by offering him more power. But Rin felt shaken by the amount of power he currently possessed.
His body was trembling, and his breathing became ragged. He tried his best to calm his racing heart, but it was of no use.
"Rin, are you alright? The boss... it disappeared into thin air. Do you know what happened to it?"
Shelly asked in a worried voice as she looked him over. There did not seem to be a hint of concern on her face for anyone else.
Rin’s body was still trembling, so he tried to pull away from Shelly and take a step back. But his legs felt heavy, causing him to collapse as control of his body returned to him.
[See? It is so easy to deal with any problem when you have the system by your side. So there is no point in being stubborn and making things more difficult than they need to be. Just surrender, and you shall live an easy life.]
The system tried to tempt Rin with an easy life, and he had to admit that he almost fell for it and leaned toward its side.
But Shelly’s presence brought him out of his daze, and he took a deep breath to steady himself.
"I am fine, Shelly. It seems like the first wave of monsters is over. But the main core is still there. We won’t be done until we take that core down. Can you focus on it for me?"
Rin asked, wanting Shelly’s attention off him and onto the task at hand. It was not that he disliked Shelly’s attention, but he found it burdensome at this point.
He wanted to keep his composure, and being with Shelly made it harder for him to focus.
Shelly pouted at his words and looked annoyed by his request. She looked back at the core with a murderous look in her eyes but did not argue.
"Rin, I will head back now because you asked me to. For now, just focus on recovering."
Shelly told him before rushing toward the core. Everyone else followed her lead, leaving Rin alone at the main base.
[What good people you have. But none of them will be able to deal with the core this time. Are you sure you don’t want the system’s help?]
The sweet voice asked, but Rin ignored it as he stood up.
He checked his pocket for the small pill Mira had given him and decided to swallow it.
[Rookie, the system is only looking after you. Just... buzz... consider it... buzz... Huh? What’s wrong with the... buzz... connection?]
The system suddenly went quiet inside Rin’s mind, and he felt at peace.
He knew this was only a temporary solution, but it was working against the system.
With that annoying voice gone, Rin expected to feel helpless. But he could still feel his powers humming beneath his skin.
He could take on the main core and win this fight.
So he took a deep breath and rushed toward the battlefield.
There, the first thing he noticed was that the core looked completely unharmed, no matter what anyone did.
It was a disaster, and their side was being overwhelmed much faster than Rin had expected.
Everyone looked exhausted, but they became noticeably more cheerful once he appeared on the battlefield.
"Rin, what are you doing here? You need to hold the last line of defense—"
Teressa yelled, trying to stop him, but her powers had no effect on Rin.
The area around him felt hollow and pure, almost as if it existed in another dimension that the system could not penetrate at the moment.
Everyone watched in awe as the core turned toward Rin with curiosity before reaching out to inspect him.
And Rin allowed it, letting the core come close to him.
Once it was within range, he cut into the system’s core and inserted something inside it.
One second was all it took for the system to writhe in pain and for the core to begin trembling.
Its body slowly turned red before it exploded.
With that, the experiment had been a success.
They had found a way to permanently destroy part of the system.
But just because it had worked on the core did not mean it would work on the main body as well.
They would need to refine the formula and produce much more of it.
But that was where Mira and the hidden resources came in.
’Finally, I can see hope at the end of the tunnel. Having Mira analyze the notes left behind by Karina and Audrey was a good choice.’
Those notes had been left inside the system, which was ironic.
Rin was using the system to destroy itself.
But if that was what it took to be free, then he was not ashamed to use this method.
All that mattered to him was that the system was destroyed and that they all got to live freely and happily ever after.
__________
"That fucking brat! I do all this to help him, and this is how he repays me? By cutting off my connection and making it impossible for me to reach him? Ugh, I’m going to kill him."
Molly had never felt anger like this before in her life. Nor had she felt this frustrated in a very long time.
And it was all Rin’s fault.
He had somehow found a way to cut off both her and the system, making it impossible to keep an eye on him. It was driving Molly mad.
She needed to monitor Rin to make sure he was developing properly as the vessel. With the system so close to reincarnating, any delay was unacceptable.
And somehow, Rin had managed to disappear at such a crucial moment, leaving her fuming.
"No, calm down! It doesn’t matter if Rin was able to escape from me. He won’t be able to escape from the main system. So this is still my victory..."
But it did not feel like a victory, and that was what was eating away at Molly.
Still, she had made a lot of progress, and she was ready to launch the final project. Every other project and hybrid she had created was going to become nourishment for the system, granting it even more power.
Soon, her efforts would be recognized, and she would be allowed to witness the birth of a new world.
"My lord, it’s only a matter of time. Once you return, this world will be yours to reshape."
She looked at the shining branch before her.
There was only one final thing left to feed it, but there were no more suitable ingredients.
The only things Molly had left were herself and her assistant. But she refused to let the almighty system be polluted by the mediocrity that was her assistant.
"My lord, I took a vow to serve you, no matter what. And now I shall fulfill that vow. I offer my flesh and blood to you. Be reborn in a new body and reclaim your vessel."
Molly pressed herself against the system’s tree branch, and within seconds she was swallowed whole, leaving no trace of her existence behind.
Even those who had known her gradually began to forget she had ever existed.
And that was how Molly met her end - with no one to recall her or mourn for her end.
