Chapter 270: Ch 270: Task 13 - Part 2
It was really easy to spot the calamity among the sea of monsters. It had a distinct appearance and towered above the rest of them.
Since it was so easy to spot, it became the target of everyone’s attacks.
"Long-range fighters, get ready to fire. On the count of three, fire."
Collin commanded, and the soldiers took their places in formation.
"Ready? Three...two...one...fire!"
All the shots connected, causing the massive creature to stagger. The others immediately took advantage of the opening to attack the calamity.
Shelly was the first to reach it and slashed at it to break its body apart. Luckily, her sword actually managed to cut through the formless body of the calamity, exposing its insides.
"Hey, look out! It’s going to explode!"
Albus warned Shelly, and she noticed the glowing center too late. She braced herself for the impact, but a wall of ice blocked the explosion before it could reach her.
"This must not be the real calamity. We need to locate the real one first if we want to finish it off."
Rin yelled from behind her as he looked around the monster horde in search of the true calamity. His eyes landed on a formless mass trying to sneak away, and the system immediately identified it as the real target.
[Calamity located. Would you like to activate auto-tracking on the target?]

This was not a skill Rin had originally possessed, which meant that the system was interfering with his abilities.
But it was not a bad skill to have at the moment.
’Alright! Track that target for me.’
Rin blinked, and his vision changed. He could see a box forming around the calamity as he looked at it. It was as if he were looking through the screen of a scanner. He immediately took out a gun and fired at the calamity.
His shot was powerful enough to reach the calamity even through the wall of monsters. But there were simply too many monsters for him to take it down properly.
"Young Master, do you know where the calamity is?"
Collin asked, and Rin nodded.
"I do. For now, concentrate on wide-area attacks wherever I point."
Everyone turned their attention toward Rin, and he pointed toward the calamity that was trying to run away.
"Shoot there."
Everyone continuously fired off their abilities. Most of the attacks barely missed the calamity, but that did not matter. Rin’s current goal was to drive the calamity into a corner.
The calamity changed direction and headed toward the east. Rin quickly pointed there as well.
"Now shoot there."
The hunters immediately attacked, cutting off the calamity’s escape route once more. It was almost fun to herd it toward exactly where Rin wanted it to go.
Rin felt a sense of accomplishment as he directed everyone, and no one questioned his commands either.
He repeated the process a few more times before the calamity finally ended up directly in front of Shelly.

It tried to run away again, but Teressa restrained it with her powers.
"Looks like you have nowhere left to run now. Goodbye."
Shelly called out to the calamity before cutting it apart and retrieving its core.
She returned to Rin once she was done and handed him the core.
"Here, this is for you, Rin."
Rin accepted the core with a smile on his face.
"Thank you for giving it to me, Shelly. You deserve some rest. Since we have a free day now, what would you like to do?"
Rin asked, and Shelly immediately grabbed his sleeve.
"Since we are free now, can you come and sleep with me? I’ve been having trouble sleeping for the past few days, and having you around will help me calm down."
Shelly pointed out with a smile on her face.
There was no need for Rin to deny her request, especially since he had already promised that he would grant one of her requests if she took down the calamity.
"Alright. If it’s just sleeping in the same bed, then I can do that. Collin, can you take care of things here? I’ll head back and get some rest now."
Rin asked his butler, and Collin immediately showed his willingness to accommodate his young master.
"Of course, Young Master. I will take care of things here. Please head back to your room, and I hope you have a restful evening."
Collin was good at taking charge. He was practically running the settlement more than Rin was at this point.
That was why Rin was not worried and left everything in Collin’s hands. Instead, he returned to his room with Shelly and decided it would be alright for them to get some sleep.
Shelly climbed onto the bed first, and Rin soon followed. She immediately wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against his chest.

"Hmm, this feels nice. I wish I could sleep like this...every day..."
Shelly’s voice grew fainter and fainter by the second. She was trying her hardest to stay awake, but it was a losing battle.
Rin did not say anything as he watched Shelly fall asleep. He simply waited until she was fully asleep before opening the system.
[Congratulations on overcoming the first calamity. We will introduce more challenges during the next segment of the task. Please keep up the good work, Rookie.]
The system felt...happy for some reason.
Rin could not explain why or how, but he had a feeling that the system was pleased with this new development.
Was it...planning something?
[Don’t be ridiculous, Rookie. This senior of yours is just happy that you are alive and well. The monster wave must be exhausting, so this senior pulled some strings and made a few changes to accommodate you. There is no need to be suspicious.]
The system quickly explained itself, but that only made it sound even more suspicious.
Did it really make sense that Rin was the only one being coddled by the system? It felt nice, but it was also starting to make him suspicious of the system.
Just...what did the system want from him?
And would Rin be able to give it what it wanted?
