Chapter 266: Ch 266: Cornered prey

"Darn it! How are you able to block my way like this? I am the chosen one! I won’t be stopped like this. System, do something..."

Victor yelled, but the system did not answer him. Only the countdown kept going, making him feel even more nervous.

Shelly decided that she had given Victor enough time and ended up driving her dagger through his heart.

"It’s time for you to fall asleep. Let’s never meet again, Victor. I hope your sleep is a restless one."

Finally, Victor’s body fell at Shelly’s feet, and she decided it was finally time to lean back and relax. She had not gone far when she felt someone grabbing her ankle.

She kicked at it with force, but the grip did not loosen.

"What the hell—!"

She looked at the person holding her back and noticed that it was Victor’s body. But his eyes looked hollow, indicating that he had no control over himself.

"I-I am...eternal...I won’t...back down..."

The man yelled even as he bled from every pore in his body. It made Shelly feel disgusted, and she tried harder to break free from his grip.

She even ended up cutting off his arm out of desperation, but Victor’s grip remained tight even after his hand was no longer connected to his body.

"You...made a mistake. I have already become a god. There is nothing you can do about it..."

Victor let out a small giggle before it broke into full-blown laughter. It caused his blood to spill everywhere, but he did not seem to care. All he wanted was to drag Shelly down with him.

"Miss Shelly, are you alright? Darn it! This is turning into a bigger mess than we expected."

Collin looked surprised by what was happening as well, and he quickly moved to help Shelly.

Now that Victor had become a problem, it was time for them to deal with him...hopefully before his young master noticed what was going on and came down to help them.

Unfortunately, Victor decided he did not want to stay quiet today, and the sound of a huge explosion filled the area.

Rin was busy sorting through his paperwork when he heard the loud noise and decided to take a look outside. His eyes landed on Shelly and Collin facing off against a monster-like creature with humanoid features.

He did not know every single person in his settlement, but even Rin recognized who that person was.

"Did something happen?"

He asked, not expecting an answer. But the system decided to answer him.

[It seems someone accepted the offer to become a calamity. There is no point in showing mercy at this point. The only relief is death.]

[So, what are you going to do now, Rin? Are you going to end the calamity? Or are you going to allow your people to suffer even more?]

The system was trying to manipulate Rin now, but he was too used to this to feel irritated.

He knew what the system was trying to tell him, and he silently agreed to follow its advice.

"I’ll take care of the calamity, so stop trying to pressure me."

Rin told the system before he tried freezing the calamity. It caused the creature to turn toward him before it started heading toward the main building.

It would not be good for anyone if it reached the main building.

The system reminded Rin, and he had a feeling it was right. He had no choice but to fight and retrieve the core.

Rin jumped down from his office window as soon as he noticed the calamity heading his way, deciding to meet it halfway.

The calamity had not fully awakened yet, so human speech was still possible. But Rin was not naive enough to think that this person could still be saved.

"Did you decide to accept the system’s offer to become a calamity? When did you get it? And what did you do to receive the offer?"

Rin asked, only to be ignored. The calamity raised its hand, and fireballs started raining down on Rin.

He did think about stopping them with his powers, but ice would not fare well against fire.

The calamity continued to speak, and its speech became more and more distorted by the second.

More people had started to show up and notice what was happening. A lot of them flinched as soon as they recognized the calamity, and some even took a step back.

Rin made sure to take note because he had a feeling many of these people were connected to the calamity and the upcoming rebellion.

The system reminded Rin before he felt his eyes burning. When he opened them again, he could see something shining inside the calamity’s chest.

’Is that...the core?’

Rin questioned, but he already felt certain that it was the core. And the system was asking him to retrieve it.

The first thing Rin tried was to restrict the calamity’s movements with ice, but the calamity was burning hot, breaking through the ice almost immediately. Rin had no choice but to fight and look for an opportunity to tear the core out.

He blocked the calamity’s first attack with his self-made sword, and it held up surprisingly well.

The calamity staggered backward, not expecting Rin to block its attack so cleanly. But then it sneered, and the last of its human features slipped away, leaving behind only a monster.

The calamity snapped its fingers, and small creatures started appearing around Rin one by one.
