Chapter 35: Chapter 35 - Rainy Day
When they left school in the afternoon, it had been sunny. Sui had checked the weather before going to school – partly cloudy, zero percent of rain. He believed it.
It turned out to be his first mistake.
When they were half way home, the first drops started falling on his nose. Another and suddenly a torrential rain came from somewhere, covering everything in gray water.
"Run!" Yuiko shouted, taking his hand.
They started running but the rain was merciless. Within a few seconds, they both got soaked. Sui’s hair was clinging to his forehead. Yuiko’s sweater stuck to her like a second skin, and her tail became heavy and wet.
"There’s a bus shelter!" he shouted, showing it to her.
They both ran to the shelter and hid under its roof. The rain was thundering against the roof, creating an awful noise.
Yuiko leaned against the wall, gasping. Her ears were flat, and her tail curled around her leg to keep warm.
"I thought you checked the weather!" she hissed, shivering.
"I did! It said zero percent!"
"Zero percent is not zero!"
"Actually, zero percent means zero—"
"Stop giving me a lesson in math, Sui!"
He looked at her apologetically. "I am sorry."
She shivered again, hugging herself. Her teeth were chattering.
He noticed it right away. "You are freezing."
"I am fine."
"You are shivering."
"I am always cold, don’t worry."
He took off his jacket and left in just school shirt. Without giving her any time to say anything, he put it around her shoulders.
"Sui, no! You will freeze!"
"I will survive. You need it more."
"But—"
"No buts." He wrapped his jacket around her shoulders. "You are more important than my being a bit cold."
She looked at him with her golden eyes sparkling a little. Her ears, still flat, twitched a little.
"You are impossible," she whispered.
"I know."
He put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. She straightened up for a second and then melted into him, putting her head on his chest.
They stood like that, watching the rain pouring down around them. The bus shelter was small, and they were standing closely. Her tail gradually uncurled from her leg and curled around his arm.
"This is nice," she murmured. "Even though we are drenched in the rain."
"Agreed. Best rainstorm ever."
She chuckled a little, then sneezed – a cute little sneeze which made her ears twitch.
"Bless you."
"Thank you. I might be sick."
"Then I will take care of you."
"You will?"
"Of course. I will bring you hot soup. I will give you blankets, and I will read you stories till you fall asleep."
Her heart fluttered a little. "You would do that?"
"I would do anything for you."
She hugged him, putting her face in his shoulder. Her tail squeezed his arm.
"I love you," she whispered.
He held her closer and kissed the top of her wet head.
"I love you too."
The rain was thundering. Minutes passed without complaints. They stood there, wrapped in each other’s warmth.
Then Yuiko shivered violently.
"Okay," Sui said. "We can’t stand here anymore. You will catch a cold."
"Where are we going? It is pouring."
"To my place. It is closer."
"To your place?"
"My parents will not be home for hours. I will give you dry clothes. And hot tea."
She looked at him, rain dripping from her lashes. "You have tea?"
"I have everything."
He stepped out of the shelter, offering his hand to her. "Let’s go. We will run."
She took his hand and they burst into the rain, running down the street. Water was splashing under their feet. Yuiko’s tail was flowing behind her like a wet banner.
They reached his house in a minute, laughing and gasping. Sui was fumbling with the key, and finally opened the door.
Inside, they stood in the entryway, water dripping under their feet.
"Stay here," he said. "I will get you towels."
He disappeared for a minute and then returned with a bunch of fluffy towels. He gave her one towel and put another one on his own shoulders.
"Go and change," he said. "I will find you some clothes."
"Your clothes?"
"They will be big, but they will be dry."
She nodded and went to the bathroom.
When she came back, she was wearing his big hoodie and sweatpants. Sleeves were covering her hands and the pants hung around her feet. Her hair was still wet, and her ears were a bit drooping.
Sui’s heart melted.
"You look adorable," he said.
"I look ridiculous."
"Adorably ridiculous."
She went to the living room, where he arranged a comfortable spot for her on the couch with a blanket and pillow.
"Sit down," he said. "I will make tea."
She laid down on the couch and buried herself in the blanket. Her tail emerged from the blanket and curled around her own leg.
Sui returned with two mugs of steaming tea. He offered one to her and then sat beside her.
"Drink," he said. "It will warm you up."
She took a sip and sighed happily. Her ears perked a little.
"This is nice," she said. "Even though I am drenched in water and probably will catch a cold."
"You will not catch a cold. I will take care of you."
She leant on him and put her head on his shoulder. Her tail uncurled from her leg and curled around his waist.
"This is nice," she repeated. "Being here with you."
He put an arm around her, pulling her close.
"You can stay here as long as you want."
She looked at him, her golden eyes gentle.
"Even if I never leave?"
"Especially if you never leave."
She smiled, leaning to him and kissed his jaw.
"Good. Because I don’t want to."
He hugged her closer, both of them warm under the blanket. The rain was thundering outside, but inside everything was warm.
Only them.
Only love.
