Chapter 456: 456 Resident Evil 16
Just then, Marvin spoke as if something had occurred to him.
"Ah, the security wristband! Ada had it..."
"Just let her have it. That way, Ada can find her own way out. We’ll use what Annette gave us."
At that, Jill asked me, "Even after she walked out like that, you’re still worried about her?"
"Like Ada said, we helped each other get this far. That’s why. Anyway, let’s get moving too."
When I said that, Jill seemed a little sulky.
We gathered our things and woke Sherry up.
"I had a good dream. We were having a picnic with my family, and Mom hugged me tight."
Claire looked sad at that and hugged Sherry without a word.
We took the elevator in the center of the lab, as Annette had instructed, and went down.
The elevator was made of glass, giving us a clear view outside.
As we descended, we could see massive generators, apparently powering the lab, spinning continuously—a truly spectacular sight.
The group couldn’t help but admire the view.
"Wow, Umbrella is really something."
The first place we arrived at was a control room with multiple monitors.
The monitors showed CCTV feeds from inside the lab and various locations in the sewer system.
This was probably where they monitored access to the lab and sewers.
Since the self-destruct system hadn’t been activated like in the original, we weren’t pressed for time.
We carefully looked around and continued down through a passage on the opposite side of the control room.
There were zombies here and there, but we dealt with them easily and pushed forward.
Eventually, we reached a place where a train was visible.
It was a peculiar setup—a single train car sat in the center of a large cylindrical space, with an office at the far end.
"This whole place seems to be a vehicle elevator. The office probably controls it. It looks like we need to go down further?"
When I said we needed to go down further, the group looked incredulous.
"How deep did Umbrella dig?"
"I know, right. At this rate, we’ll end up on the other side of the planet."
"If we reached the other side, that’d be around the Middle East. Or maybe China?"
"Probably Australia."
"I want to see koalas and kangaroos in Australia too!"
"Australia... I’d like to visit sometime too."
Come to think of it, I’d never been to Australia either.
When I traveled the world, I always went from China through the Middle East to Europe, or through Russia.
’Is it because I subconsciously avoided Southeast Asia because of the bugs? I should go someday.’
Anyway, we operated the lift from the office and began lowering the train.
But unlike the elevator, it descended slowly, so it took quite a while.
While the lift was going down, Sherry was fidgeting with her necklace.
"What’s that?"
When I asked, Sherry replied, "Mom gave it to me for my birthday. I’d rather she just came home more often than give me something like this."
"Can I take a look?"
"Sure."
Sherry took off the necklace and showed it to me, so I examined it carefully.
Jill looked at me curiously and asked, "What’s wrong? Is there something about that necklace?"
"This... it looks like a key to something. It seems to have been made with a special process."
"Really? But what good is that now? We’re leaving anyway."
"That’s true."
I said that while using [Matter Copy] to duplicate it, then handed it back to Sherry.
After a long descent, we arrived at a place that looked like a train station.
Various supplies were stacked there, suggesting that materials for the lab were brought in from outside through these rails.
The group looked around and checked the supplies.
"Come look at this. There’s food and ammunition here!"
Marvin had found something and called us over.
There were stacks of bread, sauces, bacon, coffee, and other ingredients.
There were also various weapons and ammunition nearby, but since we already had enough ammo and thought the ordeal was over, everyone’s attention was on the food rather than the weapons.
"Great. I was hungry, let’s eat here before we go."
"Yeah."
We roughly made some burgers with bread, sauce, and canned ham, and had a meal.
"I’m so hungry that even this doesn’t taste bad."
"I know. But it would have been better if we could have grilled it."
"Once we get out of here, we can go eat something good."
"I miss pizza and beer."
"There’s alcohol here too."
"Really? Oh... not bad. Umbrella wasn’t that strict after all."
The group, relaxed, sat together and chatted over a drink.
But then, something flew in and struck Sherry in the back.
Swoosh! Thump!
"Aaagh!!!"
"Sherry!!!"
We quickly checked Sherry’s back and turned simultaneously toward the direction the projectile had come from.
Grrrrr...!!
"Damn it!! I was too relaxed thinking this was over!"
Claire cursed as she saw the giant monster emerging from the darkness.
It was a massive creature with six legs, glaring at us.
Its elongated head, reminiscent of an alien, and its huge maw filled with countless fangs sent chills down the spine.
Multiple eyes writhed on its shoulders and inside its mouth, grotesque enough to trigger trypophobia.
Despite its horrific appearance, I could easily guess that this monster was William.
Phut! Phut! Phut!
"Take cover!!!"
Thump! Thump! Thump!
The group quickly hid behind the supplies to dodge the incoming attacks.
"Damn it, now it’s shooting things too!"
Unlike the original, this creature was firing its densely packed fangs like bullets at us.
Probably due to the G-virus’s constant evolution.
After taking a barrage of bullets in the waste disposal room and suffering critical damage, it must have adapted by developing this new attack ability.
Bang, bang, bang!!
As we hid behind the supplies and fired wildly, William used his sharp claws to climb the walls, dashing swiftly on his six legs to evade the incoming fire.
"Damn it, it’s too fast!"
Phut! Phut! Phut!
"Take cover!!!"
Thump! Thump! Thump!
On top of that, it was firing its fangs while moving, making it quite troublesome.
’The difficulty just spiked.’
I decided this wasn’t going to work, so I used [Foresight] and started firing the minigun wildly to suppress William’s movements.
Rattattattattat—!!!
That made William’s movements falter, noticeably slowing him down.
The group didn’t miss that opportunity and poured fire into him.
"Now!!!"
Bang, bang, bang, bang!!! Click, bang—!! Click, bang—!! Kaboom!! Kaboom!!
Kyaaaaaaah!!!
"You stubborn bastard!!! Just die already!!!"
Leon was firing particularly aggressively, probably frustrated with William’s refusal to stay down.
’Maybe the stress from Ada was also a factor?’
Thud!
While I was thinking that, the group’s concentrated fire knocked William off the wall and onto the ground.
But he quickly shook his head, regained his composure, and started running again.
I tried to use the minigun to stop his movement again, but he started focusing his fang attacks on me.
He must have recognized me as the biggest threat.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
"Damn it!"
Dodging the fangs caused gaps in the minigun’s fire rate, and William used those openings to charge at the others.
Boom!!! Crash!!!
"Ugh!!!"
As William charged with ferocious speed, Marvin quickly hid behind a supply crate.
But William crashed straight into the crate, pushing it aside.
With his massive size, the impact was tremendous, sending both the crate and Marvin flying backward.
"Marvin!!!"
Jill, who was nearby, tried to rush to Marvin, but William immediately fired fangs at her.
Thump!
"Agh!!"
"Jill!!!"
Jill couldn’t dodge the sudden attack and was hit in the arm.
But despite the wound, she endured the pain and continued firing at William.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
"You bastard!!"
I raised the minigun and laid down suppressing fire to keep William from getting to Jill.
But this couldn’t go on.
I was dealing damage, but the minigun was almost out of ammo.
And if this continued, there would definitely be more casualties.
’Should I use my abilities...’
While I was contemplating, I noticed a supply crate in the corner.
It was filled with various types of ammunition, grenades, and explosive rounds for the grenade launcher.
If I used it well, I could take down William.
I set down the nearly empty minigun, grabbed the Mallorian Arms 3516 in one hand and my backpack in the other, and stepped forward to lure William.
"Jin, that’s dangerous!"
The others, not knowing the plan, tried to stop me.
"I’ll lure him toward the crate full of ammo! Everyone, watch out for the explosion!"
I didn’t have time to explain in detail, so I gave them that brief warning and opened fire on William with the Mallorian Arms.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Thump! Thump! Thump!
"Kyaaaaaaah—!!!"
Thanks to the [Sniping] ability, my shots pierced William’s weak points—his eyes—with perfect accuracy.
William screamed and writhed in pain, then angrily started firing his fangs at me.
Clang! Clink! Clink!
I swung my backpack like lightning, deflecting and swatting away the incoming fangs.
The group briefly marveled at the sight, but I had no time to pay attention.
I kept firing and ran toward the crate full of explosives.
With his fangs ineffective and his weak points being precisely targeted, William seemed to decide he couldn’t ignore me anymore.
He charged at me like a raging bull.
With the supply crate at my back, I held a grenade in each hand, pulled the pins, and waited.
Boom!!
William charged madly, trying to impale me with his massive fangs.
But I rolled aside at the last moment, narrowly dodging.
William tried to change direction, but his massive size and speed sent him crashing into the supply crate behind me.
KABOOM!!
Whether by luck or not, the crate tipped over from the impact, spilling its contents.
I didn’t miss the opportunity and threw the grenades into the crate, then dove behind another nearby crate.
I drew the Mallorian Arms and fired at the grenades.
Bang!!
The moment the bullet hit the grenade,
KABOOOOOM—!!!!
The grenades exploded, setting off a chain reaction with the explosives and ammunition that had spilled from the crate.
A massive blast shook the underground space, and huge flames and debris swept through the area, engulfing everything in an instant.
To be honest, even hiding behind another crate, if I were an ordinary person, I wouldn’t have survived.
But taking down William, who was far stronger than in the original, required this.
"Jin, are you okay?!"
After the explosion subsided, the others rushed over, worried.
"Yeah... I’m fine."
I used the [Nanobuckle] to give my clothes a singed look, so as not to seem completely unscathed.
"Thank goodness..."
Just then, Claire shouted in surprise.
"This monster is still alive!"
We quickly went to where William was.
He was lying there, more than half his body blown away.
But he wasn’t dead yet—his body was writhing, slowly regenerating the missing parts.
"To survive that explosion..."
The others looked disgusted rather than amazed.
The G-virus’s vitality was truly tenacious.
"Step aside. I’ll finish this stubborn bastard."
Marvin, still limping from the earlier impact, stepped forward and raised the flamethrower on his back, unleashing a torrent of flames at William.
Whoosh—!!!
"Kyaaaaaaah—!!!"
Even William was ultimately a living creature.
His flesh blackened and burned under the intense heat.
He struggled desperately to survive, but he had already lost most of his limbs.
In the end, unable to escape the flames, his entire body was engulfed, slowly burning to death.
Then, I heard someone collapse nearby.
Thud!
"Jill!!!"
I rushed to Jill’s side and checked her condition.
Starting from her arm, where William’s fang had struck, her veins were bulging and her skin was swelling in multiple places.
The virus was spreading throughout her body.
"This is bad! Sherry is also acting strange!"
Claire, who was tending to Sherry, also shouted.
"Oh no... it seems those were more than just simple attacks. That monster must have transmitted the virus through his fangs."
Claire asked in shock, "Then... what do we do?"
I thought for a moment, then packed my things and said, "We need to go back up. There might be a vaccine Annette prepared. It’s the only way to save them."
Leon stepped forward as well.
"I’ll come too. Luckily, I haven’t been hurt yet."
"Good. Claire and Marvin, get the train ready to move. I’ll leave them in your care."
Claire nodded and replied, "Understood."
