A deep sound came from the center pit.
Then the blood grooves on the ground moved.
The stone wall ahead cracked.
CRACK!
The crack spread across the wall in front of them.
Then a hand pushed out from inside.
The skin was gray, but red lines crawled under it. Half of its body was fused with formation stones.
It pulled itself out of the wall.
Its face was made from several faces pressed together.
The mouths opened one by one.
"Return."
The civilians screamed.
Rovan's face tightened. "What the hell is that?"
Beatrice stared at it. "How could I know!?"
The creature's heads turned toward her.
All its eyes focused on her wound.
Rovan saw it and immediately moved in front of her.
"Of course it wants you."
The creature rushed forward. Its speed was much faster than the infected.
Rovan pushed Beatrice back and swung the metal bar.
BAM!!
The bar hit the creature's arm.
The arm bent, but it did not break.
The creature slapped Rovan away.
Rovan crashed into the wall.
"Rovan!" Beatrice shouted.
The creature rushed toward the civilians.
The two guards fired at it.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The bullets hit its chest and sank inside.
The creature did not stop.
The old worker grabbed a child and pulled him aside.
The creature's arm smashed down where the child had stood.
BAM!!
The stone cracked.
Rovan stood up with blood at the corner of his mouth.
"Damn it."
He picked up the bent metal bar and rushed back.
Beatrice raised her staff with both hands.
A formation appeared under the creature's feet.
Ice spread from the ground and climbed up its legs.
The creature slowed.
Rovan reached it and smashed the bar into one of its knees.
CRACK!!
This time, the knee broke.
The creature fell to one side.
"Shoot the cracked part!" Rovan shouted.
The guards fired again.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Bullets entered the broken knee.
Black blood and red mist sprayed out.
The creature screamed.
The sound made everyone's head ring.
Several civilians fell to the ground.
Gray veins started appearing on one woman's neck.
Beatrice saw it and clenched her teeth.
"It's calling backup."
Rovan looked around. "Then shut it up!"
"I am trying!"
The creature tore its own broken leg free.
Then it started crawling with its arms.
It rushed toward Beatrice.
Rovan blocked it again.
The creature struck down.
Rovan raised the metal bar.
BAM!!
The metal bar snapped.
The remaining force hit his shoulder.
Rovan dropped to one knee.
His face twisted in pain.
Beatrice stabbed her staff toward the creature's head.
A light ring formed.
The creature opened all its mouths.
"Feed."
The light ring broke.
Beatrice spat out blood.
Rovan's eyes widened.
The creature's hand reached toward her throat.
At that moment, the old worker shouted from the side.
"Pressure pipe!"
Rovan looked up.
An old pipe ran across the ceiling.
The red formation lines had already crawled over it.
Rovan understood at once.
He grabbed the broken metal bar and threw it with all his strength.
The bar hit the pipe joint.
CLANG!!
Nothing happened.
Rovan cursed and picked up a fallen guard's knife.
The creature's fingers were almost touching Beatrice.
Then one of the guards shouted and fired at the pipe joint again and again.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The joint cracked.
The old worker slammed his fist into a rusted emergency box on the wall.
A valve inside turned by itself.
PSSSHHHHH!!
Steam and dirty water burst from the pipe.
The pressure slammed into the creature's back.
Beatrice forced her staff up.
The steam twisted into a blade.
SHRKK!!
The blade cut across the creature's shoulder.
Rovan rushed in and kicked the arm away.
The creature screamed again.
But it did not die.
Red lines from the wall stretched toward it.
They pierced into its back.
The broken arm began to grow again.
Rovan's face went stiff.
"You have got to be kidding me."
Beatrice's hand trembled.
"It is connected to the formation."
"Then cut the formation."
"I don't have enough qi."
The creature stood again.
Its faces turned toward them.
It opened its mouths.
The heartbeat became louder.
Thump.
The civilians held their heads.
Thump.
The guards fell to one knee.
Thump.
Gray veins appeared on several people at once.
Beatrice's eyes shook.
If this continued, they would all turn before the creature killed them.
Rovan forced himself to stand.
His shoulder was already swollen.
His breathing was rough.
His qi had run out.
But he still stood in front of Beatrice.
Beatrice looked at his back.
"You cannot block that."
Rovan wiped the blood from his mouth.
The creature moved.
Rovan also moved.
He rushed forward with only the broken piece of metal in his hand.
The creature raised its arm.
Rovan knew he could not stop it.
But he could buy one breath.
That was enough.
All his life, he had done so many things. Being above others, feeling all powerful.
But only at this moment, with his life on the line, did he feel truly alive.
The looks from the other survivors at this time were something he had never received.
They were not looking at him because of his family background.
They were not looking at him with despise, as someone who had zero worth without his family.
'Even if I die now, it is fine. At least I know what it means to be alive. But if I just had more time.'
The arm came down.
Before it hit him, a green flame shot through the darkness.
It pierced the creature's arm and burned straight through its shoulder.
BOOM!!
The creature staggered.
A purple sword line followed.
SHRKK!!
The creature's other arm was cut off.
Frozen lotuses bloomed across the wall.
The red formation lines around the creature froze at once.
Rovan stopped, his eyes widened.
Two figures landed on the walkway in front of him.
Alex lowered his hand.
Green flames floated around his fingers.
Mingyue stood beside him, her sword covered in frost.
Her eyes swept across Rovan, Beatrice, the civilians, and the failed vessel.
"You are still alive."
Rovan let out a breath and almost fell.
"Master... finally..."
Beatrice looked at Alex.
"You came."
Alex glanced at her wounded leg, then at the gray veins appearing on the civilians.
His expression became colder.
The creature screamed.
Its broken arms tried to grow again, but Mingyue's ice sealed the red lines around it.
Alex looked at the creature.
Then his gaze moved toward the center pit far below.
The giant red shadow inside the blood mist pulsed again.
Thump.
Alex's face darkened. "We're too late."
Rovan's throat tightened. "What do you mean?"
Alex raised his hand.
Green fire gathered into a long spear.
"You don't need to know."
The spear then grew in size and began spinning at high speed.
"You all should leave now."
Rovan wanted to ask where they should go, but Alex had already launched the spear.
BOOM!!!!
The spear shot through the creature, decimating it into ashes.
But it did not stop there.
It pierced through the wall like a knife through butter and did not stop until daylight pierced through the tunnel.
Rovan gulped.
Only now did he realize how lucky he was.
'Trying to flirt with that man's woman. What was I even thinking?'
