"It’s nothing serious," I said calmly to Helen, who was visibly worried about her daughter and the sudden commotion outside. "Let me take care of it. You should take a shower. Your hair’s all sweaty."

"Okay, big sister," he said playfully. The rest of the group followed his lead, dropping their water guns on the edge of the pool and jumping into the water with loud splashes.

Gia smiled, satisfied, and turned back to me.

"Let us enjoy too, Alex," she said excitedly. She stepped into the pool, lowering herself into the cool water with a happy sigh.

I stayed outside the pool, standing on the edge, watching her. When Gia looked up at me from the water, her eyes suddenly widened.
