Chapter 149: Serpent dragon in the villa

The morning after the confrontation with Kunther dawned clear and crisp over the Land of Roakan, the mountain air carrying a sharp chill that contrasted with the warmth still lingering in Raaya Villa’s halls.

Jake had risen early, the events of the previous night replaying in his mind as he dressed in simple but finely made traveling clothes—a dark tunic and trousers suited for riding, with a cloak thrown over his shoulders.

The villa bustled quietly around him, servants preparing provisions and Dragon Maidens checking equipment in the courtyard.

He was preparing to depart for the high passes to answer the invitation from his mother’s clan, the Jiunsu Clan.

The scroll still rested on his desk, its elegant script a quiet promise of answers—or dangers—he had yet to face. His mind was already half-turned toward the journey when a maid appeared at his door with news of a visitor.

Angana Phoenix had arrived unannounced, requesting a private audience before he left.

She was an older woman Jake had met only briefly weeks earlier.

He didn’t know why she was here; he went to meet her.

They met in a small, sunlit sitting room off the main hall, where a low table had been set with tea and light pastries.

Angana was already seated when Jake entered, her posture graceful as she poured the steaming brew into delicate porcelain cups.

The scent of jasmine and mountain herbs filled the air, mingling with the faint trace of her perfume—something warm and floral that suited her perfectly.

"Jake," she greeted him warmly, her voice smooth and cultured, carrying just a hint of the northern accent from her clan’s lands.

"I hope I’m not delaying your departure. I heard you were preparing to leave today."

Jake took the seat across from her, accepting the cup she offered.

"Not at all, Lady Phoenix. It’s good to see you again."

She smiled, the expression softening the sharp lines of her face and revealing the warmth beneath her composed exterior.

"Please, call me Angana. Titles feel so formal between friends, don’t you think?"

She took a sip of her tea, her green eyes studying him over the rim.

"I’ve come because my clan has been following your progress with great interest. Your recent dungeon mission has been the talk of the city. Word travels fast in these mountains. They say you faced horrors that would break most men and emerged stronger for it."

Jake kept his expression neutral, though inwardly he was cautious. The details of what had truly happened in the forest—the revelations about Primeavi, the gods, the dying general he had freed—were not for public ears.

"It was challenging," he said simply.

"But we handled it. The details are... complicated."

Angana nodded, not pressing further.

"I understand. Some things are best kept close. But the whole of Roakan has been buzzing about yesterday as well. The incident at your gates—the man Kunther and his men. The shadow that appeared behind you; the way the sky darkened. They say you faced him down without lifting a blade, and he fled like a frightened boy. The stories are growing already. Some call it a miracle. Others call it a warning."

Jake set his cup down, meeting her gaze steadily.

"It was a reminder. To those who think they can intimidate what they don’t understand."

She leaned forward slightly, her mature features alight with genuine curiosity and something deeper—an interest that went beyond politics.

"My clan would very much like to meet you properly, Jake. Not through messengers or scrolls, but face to face. We have much to discuss about your heritage, your power... and the future of our relationship."

Jake furrowed his brows but didn’t dwell on it.

Jake stood, signaling that the conversation had reached its natural end.

He appreciated her directness, the way she spoke without the veiled threats or manipulations he had come to expect from others.

But he had already decided his course.

"I appreciate the invitation, Angana. Truly. But I’m leaving for important matters that can’t wait. The Phenoix clan will have to be patient a little longer."

Angana rose with him, her movements fluid and elegant. She hid her disappointment but didn’t stop him from leaving.

For a moment she simply looked at him, her green eyes searching his face as if committing it to memory.

Then she stepped forward and embraced him—not the stiff, formal hug of a political ally, but something warmer, more personal. Her arms wrapped around his shoulders, her body pressing lightly against his in a way that spoke of quiet affection and perhaps something more.

The scent of her perfume enveloped him, and he felt the soft fullness of her mature figure against him, a reminder of why women like her had always drawn his eye.

"Safe travels, then," she murmured against his ear.

"And know that my clan’s doors are always open to you. When you’re ready."

Jake returned the embrace briefly, his hand resting lightly on her back before he stepped away. "Thank you. I’ll remember that."

He left the sitting room and made his way through the villa to the large open ground on the eastern side, where the Dragon Maidens had gathered.

Raani stood at the forefront, her athletic frame clad in her signature black scale-mail, her dark hair braided tightly for travel.

Behind her waited a small squad of six Dragon Maidens, each paired with her own dragon. The beasts were impressive even at rest—medium-sized creatures with scaled hides in shades of deep green, midnight blue, and obsidian black, their wings folded neatly against their powerful bodies, eyes gleaming with intelligence and loyalty.

But Raani’s dragon, Syreth, dwarfed the others.

The massive serpentine beast was easily twice their size, his scales a shimmering obsidian that caught the light like polished stone, his wings vast and leathery, his eyes a piercing golden hue that matched his rider’s. He shifted slightly as Jake approached, letting out a low rumble of recognition.

Chelsea, Rosa, and the mother-daughter pair—Matilda and Margeret—had come out to see him off, standing at the edge of the open ground with the morning breeze stirring their hair and gowns.

Chelsea’s expression was one of quiet pride mixed with the ever-present worry she tried to hide. Rosa stood tall and regal, her silver hair catching the wind.

Matilda, still carrying the glow of their recent intimacy, watched him with a soft, knowing smile, while young Margeret hovered close to her mother, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and concern.

Raani turned as Jake approached, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"Everything’s ready, my lord. Syreth is eager to stretch his wings. Would you like to ride with me? The view from his back is something to behold."

Jake smiled back at her.

The air around him began to shift, growing heavier, charged with an ancient energy that made the hairs on his arms stand on end.

Raani’s smile faded as she stepped back involuntarily because something made her do it and it was right in front of her.

The Dragon Maidens and their mounts sensed it first, the beasts shifting restlessly, wings twitching as if in recognition.

Jake closed his eyes for a moment, feeling the change ripple through his body like fire in his veins. It started slowly—a warmth in his core that spread outward, his skin prickling as scales began to form, subtle at first, then spreading in intricate patterns across his arms and chest. His body grew, muscles expanding, bones lengthening with a sensation that was both painful and exhilarating.

The ground seemed to shrink beneath him as he rose, his form elongating, twisting into something vast and serpentine. Wings unfurled from his back, leathery and powerful, catching the morning light. His face elongated into a draconic muzzle, eyes glowing with an inner fire, his body becoming a giant, magnificent serpentine dragon—scales shimmering in shades of deep obsidian and midnight blue, claws digging into the earth, and tail lashing behind him with controlled power.

The transformation was not instant; it built gradually, each stage revealing more of the ancient power that had lain dormant within him.

The air crackled, and for a moment the sky itself seemed to dim, as if the dragon within was drawing the light toward it.

When it was complete, Jake towered over the gathered group, his massive form casting a long shadow across the open ground. The size of Jake’s form was so massive that it outshone the villa beside them.

Syreth rumbled again, this time in what sounded like approval, while the other dragons bowed their heads slightly in instinctive deference.

Raani stared up at him, her golden eyes wide with extreme shock. She didn’t know Jake was capable of transforming, much less into a dragon. Her emotions and thoughts were all over the place as she thought about Jake and his dragon form. He was truly his father’s child, inheriting the purest form of Raikarndel’s blood.

The Dragon Maidens stood frozen for a moment, their mounts shifting beneath them, before they too looked on in stunned silence.
