Chapter 44: Pattern Recognition

Liam didn’t think much about the mission that night.

A four-day deadline meant there was no reason to rush. The system had never assigned him a mission without giving him enough opportunities to complete it.

Whatever Victoria’s ex-husband was planning, sooner or later he would make his move.Liam only had to be ready. He didn’t have to wait long.

The following evening, his phone vibrated.Victoria: Dinner tomorrow? Small celebration. Nothing fancy.

Liam looked at the message for several seconds before a faint smile appeared on his face.So this is where it begins.

The dinner had been Victoria’s idea a quiet celebration after landing an important contract.

The restaurant was elegant without being extravagant. Olivia sat beside her mother, looking as though she’d rather be anywhere else.

Ethan did his best to keep the conversation moving whenever awkward silences threatened to settle over the table.after all forced him to come here if not what would he be doing here

Then a familiar voice interrupted everything."Victoria."The tone was warm, polished, and carefully practiced.

"You look well.Victoria’s fork stopped halfway to her mouth. Daniel.Olivia’s shoulders stiffened instantly.

Daniel Hayes smiled as though he belonged there. Without asking permission, he pulled out the empty chair at the end of the table and sat down.

"I heard about the contract," he said. "Congratulations. I always knew you’d land on your feet."

Victoria’s expression cooled. "What are you doing here?""What? A father can’t check in on his daughter?" His eyes drifted toward Olivia, who refused to meet them.

"I’m not here to make a scene," Daniel continued. "But you and I still have unfinished business. The house. The settlement. Some assets from the marriage."

Victoria’s gaze hardened. "That settlement was finalized eight years ago."

"Circumstances change." Daniel folded his hands together. "My lawyer believes there’s enough to reopen discussions."

Olivia’s fork slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the plate. The sound echoed across the table.

"I’ve kept records," Daniel continued, lowering his voice. "Every attempt I made to stay involved. Every obstacle I faced. If this ends up in mediation or even court that history will matter."

For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Liam smiled faintly. "That sounds like it’ll hold up well.

Daniel frowned and turned toward Liam for the first time. "And you are?"

Before Liam could answer, Victoria spoke calmly. "A friend." She paused for a while before adding, "And my business partner."

Daniel’s eyebrows lifted slightly. He hadn’t expected that answer. "I see."

Liam met his gaze without flinching. "That sounds like it’ll hold up well."

Then I suppose everything you just said will hold up well. Daniel frowned. What do you mean? If it’s all documented....It is.

Liam lifted his glass. "Good. I hope it is.

Nothing more. No accusations. No argument. No challenge.

Just enough quiet confidence to make Daniel wonder why nobody around the table seemed intimidated.

The silence stretched. Daniel looked from face to face, clearly expecting someone to react. Nobody did.

After another uncomfortable moment, he stood. "We’ll discuss this properly another time." Without waiting for a response, he walked away.

Only after he disappeared through the restaurant doors did Olivia finally breathe again.

"He always does that." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "He only shows up when things are going well for Mom."

She didn’t look at Liam. But for the first time... she didn’t deliberately avoid looking at him either.

The first two days passed quietly. Liam almost thought Daniel had decided to back down after the dinner.

On the second evening, while helping Monica carry things Claire casually mentioned something.

"I ran into an old acquaintance today." She wiped the counter as she spoke. "He used to handle accounting work for a company called Reyes Consulting."

Liam’s hands paused for the briefest moment. "Oh?"Claire shrugged. "He said the company collapsed a few years ago. Messy lawsuits. Financial problems. Sounded like a disaster."

Reyes Consulting...You know it?Maybe.

That single clue was enough. The next morning Liam asked Ethan for a favor.

"You spend half your life online."Ethan grinned proudly. "More than half."See what you can find on Reyes Consulting."

By the following afternoon Ethan had done exactly that public court filings, business registrations, archived company records.

One document immediately caught Liam’s attention: a lawsuit filed by Daniel’s former business partner, still active, still unresolved.

Liam kept digging. Minutes later, he found another public filing a small-business loan application submitted just eleven days earlier. One section stood out immediately:

Secondary repayment source: Anticipated family support.Liam read the sentence twice. It wasn’t proof Daniel was lying.

But it proved something almost as valuable: timing. Daniel hadn’t returned because he’d suddenly rediscovered his family. He’d returned because he’d run out of money.

The third day, Victoria called, she sounded genuinely worried. My lawyer received a formal demand letter.A demand letter?

"They want mediation." Her voice was quieter than usual. "My lawyer says it’s weak legally... but if it drags on, it could still become expensive and exhausting."

Liam thought for a moment. "Would you mind sending me a copy?"

A few minutes later, the document arrived. He read it carefully, every paragraph, every argument. Then he understood.

Daniel wasn’t confident. He was gambling. If he truly believed he had a strong case, he wouldn’t have tried pressuring Victoria into mediation first he was hoping she’d settle before anyone looked too closely.

That evening, Liam finished gathering everything: the lawsuit, the loan application, a timeline showing Daniel’s sporadic contact with Olivia over the past nine years.

Claire quietly introduced Liam to Victoria’s attorney, Attorney Mason. Rather than offering legal advice himself, Liam simply forwarded everything he’d collected with a brief note. The evidence could speak for itself. The legal strategy belonged to the professionals.

Late on the fourth day, Victoria called again. This time she sounded relieved.

"My lawyer responded." She laughed softly. "I’ve never heard her sound so confident."

"What happened?"

"She presented everything." Victoria exhaled. "The lawsuit... the loan application... the timeline... They told Daniel’s lawyer that if this went to mediation, they’d make his financial motive part of the official record."

She paused. "An hour later, his lawyer called back."What did he say?

Victoria smiled. "Just four words. ’Forget it. We’re done.’"Daniel had withdrawn. No mediation. No hearing. No further contact. The mission timer quietly disappeared from Liam’s vision.

"You gave my lawyer those documents, didn’t you?"I found them. And she knew how to use them." Victoria laughed softly.

After a moment, she said quietly, "You really didn’t have to go that far."

Later that week, Victoria stopped by Rage Quit after closing. The computers had all gone dark. Only the light above the counter remained.

She leaned against it with her arms loosely folded. I decided to drop by and see you

Liam smiled. "I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad."

A soft laugh escaped her.I came to say thank you, Liam."He met her eyes for a brief moment and nodded.

Good night, Liam.

On the walk home, a familiar blue screen appeared.
