Chapter 185: Chapter 185: She Became the Scapegoat?

Anne Sutton felt a wave of humiliation at the butler’s words, unsure where to even begin.

’How am I supposed to explain this?’

’That my father’s illegitimate daughter is running rampant in the company, all while using my name?’

Even though Anne Sutton had been married to Nathan Fawcett, she had never dared to be as arrogant as Yvonne Evans!

Yvonne Evans’s behavior today had truly infuriated her.

Anne Sutton said, "Henry Underwood shouldn’t have any connection to her. Besides, he wouldn’t dare do something like this without Charles Prescott’s permission. Since she got in, it must have been Charles Prescott’s doing."

The butler said, "That’s what I was thinking as well."

Anne Sutton asked, "Has she been fired yet?"

The butler nodded. "I’ve already instructed someone to handle it!"

Anne Sutton said, "Let Ethan Linden know about this."

’I wonder what kind of deal Father made with Charles Prescott this time for him to do something so unprincipled.’

Just then, the butler’s phone rang. He answered it, then looked at Anne Sutton respectfully. "Chairman Grant and Mr. Fawcett are in a meeting right now. They’ve asked you to go over."

"Me?" Anne Sutton was puzzled.

’Could it be that Nathan already knows about what happened today?’

’How did he find out so quickly?’

Anne Sutton stood up. "In that case, you stay with Ian. I’ll be right back."

She headed out the door.

At the door, Chairman Grant’s secretary was waiting for her. "Ms. Sutton."

The man looked very serious, and being about the same age as her father, he had an intimidating presence that made one feel constrained.

In truth, before Ethan Linden appeared, Chairman Grant had treated Anne Sutton quite well, often sending his secretary to look out for her.

That was why Charles Prescott and Miles Prescott had been hesitant when dealing with her.

But ever since the last company meeting, when Ethan Linden said he wanted to be with Anne Sutton, Chairman Grant’s attitude toward her had changed.

He no longer looked upon her favorably.

After all, in his eyes, Anne Sutton had been Nathan Fawcett’s wife, his widow, the only thing Nathan had left behind in this world.

But with her getting together with Ethan Linden, many things were different.

In the eyes of a chauvinist, when a husband dies, his wife should remain a widow, not get involved with other men.

Anne Sutton followed the secretary to the conference room. There weren’t many people inside—just Nathan Fawcett, Chairman Grant, and a few board members who were close to the chairman.

Nathan Fawcett sat in the center, with Chairman Grant to the side. When Anne Sutton entered, Nathan didn’t speak. He seemed rather cold at the moment. It was Chairman Grant who spoke up. "Have a seat."

Besides them, there was a young woman sitting to the side. She was very pretty, wore no makeup, and had a reassuring, down-to-earth look about her.

She sat off to the side, her eyes filled with unease when she saw Anne Sutton.

Anne Sutton sat down and asked, "You asked me to come here. Is something wrong?"

’No one gave me a heads-up before I came over.’

’It’s just that the atmosphere in here is incredibly strange.’

Chairman Grant said, "This young woman’s name is Grace. She’s a graduate of University A. When she first enrolled, she did so with the top score, and she’s been a scholarship recipient every year since. Here are her academic records. You can take a look."

As soon as Chairman Grant finished speaking, his secretary handed over the file.

Anne Sutton felt everyone’s eyes on her as she reviewed the file.

’This young woman is indeed very impressive.’

She had previously thought Sharon’s academic performance was decent, but compared to this girl, it was utterly ordinary.

She glanced at Grace, who was sitting to the side. The young woman sat there without looking at Anne Sutton.

Especially considering Grace’s background. Her family wasn’t well-off—her mother is deaf and mute, and her parents are on social assistance. She has gotten to where she is today entirely on her own merit.

Chairman Grant said, "Yes, she is outstanding. But this outstanding young woman, despite passing her interview, was not hired by our company. Recently, someone came to me with a complaint, saying that you, Ms. Sutton, used your connections to get a relative of yours into the company—someone they claimed was your sister. Ms. Sutton, don’t you find that outrageous?"

Hearing Chairman Grant’s words and glancing at Grace again, Anne Sutton realized she was the girl whose position had been taken by Yvonne Evans.

There are only so many positions at Fawcett Group. When someone new comes in, someone else naturally has to go.

Grace, having no connections, became the unfortunate victim.

Anne Sutton said, "Actually, I came here to talk about this very matter."

Chairman Grant looked at her. "Is that so?"

He clearly didn’t believe her.

He had been by the old chairman’s side for so many years, watching the Fawcett Group grow one step at a time. Pushing out talented people to hire some good-for-nothings brought no benefit to the company whatsoever.

As Nathan Fawcett’s wife, Anne Sutton had the right to enjoy everything the company provided, but for her to meddle in company affairs and have such a negative impact—that made Chairman Grant very unhappy.

Anne Sutton said, "I only found out about this today myself. The person was brought in by Charles Prescott’s assistant, Henry Underwood. Just a moment ago, I had the butler fire the girl, Yvonne Evans."

Sitting to the side, Nathan Fawcett’s expression was complicated as he heard Anne Sutton’s words and looked at her.

’Charles Prescott?’

’How is he involved again?’

Chairman Grant said, "So, you admit you’re the one who brought her in, and that she’s connected to you?"

Anne Sutton replied, "I have no connection to that woman, and her joining the company had nothing to do with me. Charles Prescott has always disliked me. He probably brought her in just to tarnish my reputation!"

One of the board members sitting nearby chuckled. "You claim someone else framed you, but isn’t it quite the coincidence that you fired her right as we were about to summon you? It looks to me like you have a guilty conscience!"
