Chapter 170: Chapter 170: The Stupid Thing He Did
Anne Sutton said, "I’m not as wonderful as you say."
"But I think you are."
Hearing Ian’s words, Anne Sutton smiled.
’What a pity that things in this world rarely go as planned. Such an adorable child, but he wasn’t hers.’
Nathan Fawcett stood to the side, watching Anne Sutton. Seeing how happily she was chatting with Ian, he simply sat down quietly nearby.
Anne Sutton looked at him. "By the way, Charles Prescott went to the house today."
Nathan Fawcett’s eyes turned cold. "What was he doing there?"
"He said he’d left something behind and came to pick it up," Anne Sutton said. "I had someone accompany him inside. He took his things and has already left."
Hearing her explanation, Nathan Fawcett said, "If he needed to get something, he could have just sent someone to run the errand for him. Did he really need to go himself?"
Anne Sutton heard him and said, "You know, you have a point."
Nathan Fawcett picked up his glass and took a sip of water, his eyes fixed on Anne Sutton. ’There’s no way Charles Prescott went to the house for any other reason than to see her. He knew that man hadn’t given up. But from the way Anne’s acting, she doesn’t seem to have noticed at all. Still, the fact that she’s willing to tell me about it must mean she and Charles don’t have some illicit relationship. Her conscience is clear, at least.’
He looked at Anne Sutton and asked, "Is something wrong?"
’The butler said she was in a bad mood last night.’
Anne Sutton was taken aback by his question. She looked at Nathan Fawcett, finding it a little hard to believe. ’He’s actually... concerned about me?’
Anne Sutton said, "It’s nothing much, just some family matters."
"What kind of family matters?" Nathan Fawcett asked. "Is it about your sister?"
’That shouldn’t be enough to make her as dispirited as she was yesterday.’
Anne Sutton said, "I don’t know how to tell you. It’s about my father."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "What about your father?"
"You know Sharon is pregnant, right? I went to see my dad to talk about her getting married, but... I ended up stumbling upon his secret. He has an illegitimate daughter. And now he wants to get that daughter a job at the Fawcett Group. He’s never shown this much concern for Sharon, not even when she graduated."
He just said that if Sharon Sutton couldn’t find a job, she could come help out at the company.
’But for his illegitimate daughter, he’s trying to arrange a position at the Fawcett Group. It’s ridiculous, really.’
As Nathan Fawcett listened to Anne Sutton, he looked at her and could sense her sadness.
She had married him back then to save the Sutton Family, to keep them from going bankrupt.
She had sacrificed so much for the Sutton Family.
Discovering what kind of person her father truly was must have been a terrible blow.
Nathan Fawcett used to despise his own father as well.
He’d heard that his mother had become disillusioned with his father because he often stayed out, messing around, after she had given birth.
She had hated his father to the bone for all these years, and as a result, he, the son, had also been caught in the crossfire.
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "If my dad comes to you for this favor, you absolutely cannot help him."
Nathan Fawcett said in a low voice, "Don’t worry. I know what’s what."
’The person he married was Anne Sutton. As for Sean Sutton’s daughter from another woman... if even Anne Sutton didn’t care about her, he certainly wasn’t going to get involved.’
Seeing that Nathan Fawcett had agreed, Anne Sutton felt a wave of relief.
’She knew that Charles Prescott had never thought much of her father and had never even gotten involved in her family’s affairs before. If her father asked Charles for this kind of favor, he definitely wouldn’t agree. Left with no other options, her father would probably come to Nathan Fawcett... After all, Nathan Fawcett was currently an investor in her father’s company, and he was the one who had single-handedly saved the Sutton Group. As long as Nathan didn’t agree, her father would have no way of getting his other daughter a position at the Fawcett Group.’
Having secured Nathan Fawcett’s promise, Anne Sutton felt at ease.
Her interactions with him over the past couple of days had made her realize that her relationship with Nathan Fawcett was different now. Before, they had been bound together for the sake of their child; back then, his health was poor, and he’d had no other choice. Neither had she.
But things were different now!
He wasn’t the man he used to be; he had many options.
’Who knows when he might decide I’m superfluous? But right now, he’s the only person I can rely on. When you’re living under someone else’s roof, you have to bow your head. Even if I can’t stand him, I’ll have to endure it for now. It’s just a matter of putting on an act. If it helps me achieve my goals, what’s wrong with that?’
Anne Sutton resumed feeding Ian his soup. Nathan Fawcett watched her, and the hospital room instantly fell silent.
Soon, the butler walked in. Seeing Anne Sutton, he greeted her, "Ma’am, you’re here."
Anne Sutton glanced at him and nodded. "Mhm."
The butler said, "Did you not like the flowers and lunch that were sent today? I saw you gave them away."
Anne Sutton, who still had no idea who had sent them, glanced at the butler and asked, "The flowers and lunch... were they from you?"
The butler chuckled. "How could they be from me? Sir sent them."
After all, it was Nathan Fawcett who was trying to win her over, so he was putting in a good word for him.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Shut up."
’He hadn’t expected the butler to suddenly come over and say that. So awkward...’
Nathan Fawcett glanced uncomfortably at Anne Sutton. From the day he was born until now, he had never tried to please any woman other than his mother.
’Thinking about how he’d sent Anne Sutton flowers and lunch... it was so stupid. He didn’t want to admit he’d actually listened to the butler’s terrible advice. And now, of all times, the butler had to go and expose his foolishness! How infuriating!’
Anne Sutton stared at Nathan Fawcett, a little stunned. She also hadn’t expected the flowers and lunch to be from him.
’After all, the thought had never even crossed her mind.’
Anne Sutton said, "There was no name on it. I didn’t know. I thought they were from a patient."
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her. Although he was embarrassed, her explanation still made him feel a little better.
’So she gave them away because she didn’t know who they were from, not because she was rejecting him!’
The butler smiled. "I forgot to remind Sir to write a name. I’ll be sure to remember next time."
Nathan Fawcett said to the butler, "Are you all finished with your work?"
Seeing that he was getting on Nathan’s nerves, the butler quickly said, "Not at all. By the way, you mentioned wanting to invite Chairman Grant to dinner, but he still hasn’t agreed. It seems he’s still angry about what happened at the company."
The "incident at the company," of course, referred to when Nathan Fawcett had announced in front of all the board members that he was going to be with Anne Sutton.
It had upset a lot of people.
Nathan Fawcett said, "If he doesn’t want to, then forget it. He’ll come looking for me when he’s ready."
The butler nodded. "I’ll get back to my duties, then."
After saying that, he quickly exited the hospital room.
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, recalling how he had domineeringly prevented her from being with Charles Prescott at the company.
’For my sake, he even offended Chairman Grant, who had always been my supporter. I was so worried back then. But now that I know who he really is, a little thing like this is nothing to him. The moment he reveals his true identity, Chairman Grant will surely come back around and support him.’
