Chapter 123: Chapter 123
"Get away from me." Tempest sneered at Rynax as she stood from where she was just kneeling. She wiped her face hard trying to get all traces of her emotion off her face. The last thing she wanted was for him or anyone else to see her breaking down.
She had to be strong.
"Now, now, you don’t have to be so prickly with me. I’m just here to see how you are." Rynax lifted his hands up as if he were surrendering.
"I’m fine." Tempest snapped at him.
Rynax shrugged his shoulders twice. "I don’t think that’s true. Do you make a habit of lying?"
"I’m not lying. I am fine." Tempest sighed and ran a hand through her hair.
"If you say so. So tell me, Omega, what are you doing back here where no one can find you? This can be quite dangerous."
"I wanted to get away from everyone. Evidently I didn’t go far enough." Tempest once again tried to walk by Rynax, but he stopped her from leaving. All the hair on the back of her neck stood straight up. Was he trying to hurt her? Trying to get her to do something she didn’t want to do?
"I can show you someplace we can go that no one would find you. If that’s what you’re after."
"For what, so you can have your way with me? I don’t think so." Tempest crossed her arms over her chest and glared at the man in front of her.
"Tempest, I can assure you I have no intention of hurting you or forcing you to do something you don’t want to do. I’m a friend. That’s all. And a friend helps."
Tempest chuckled. She was all but through with friends. Mexyn was her friend. Gerax was her friend. She didn’t need any more friends keeping tabs on her. She wanted to go away.
"A true friend would usher me back to the center of the town where everyone could see me so I could be fussed over."
"Maybe I’m a different kind of friend. The one who is the bad influence." Rynax shrugged.
This piqued Tempest’s interest, and now instead of trying to get away from him, she was trying to find out what he meant. "Meaning?"
"Meaning, you want to get away from everyone. I can do that for you. I can take you away from everyone, where you can have some peace. It’ll still be safe. I’m not crazy, but it’s away from the general public."
"Why would you do that?" Tempest couldn’t figure out what he was playing at. Why would he help her?
"If I’m completely honest with you. Dron asked me to look over you. Of course, I’m not sure he realized that I would be looking over you in my own way and not like the rest of them. I rarely play by the rules."
Tempest sighed. Rynax was yet another security detail.
"That’s fine. I can figure this out on my own."
"I doubt it. You’d probably walk right into the center of town by the time you figured out where you were. Or worse, you do make your way away from the public but end up in a predator’s den. We can’t have that."
"Aren’t you the predator?" Tempest tilted her head to the side.
"Absolutely, I’m the predator, but today this predator’s job is to protect you, so there’s no need for you to worry. We should go have some fun. What do you say?"
Fun? Temepst hadn’t thought about having fun since Dron got into the transportation device.
"I could go for a little fun." Tempest answered softly.
"That’s what I’m talking about. How about we start with this." Rynax reached into his bedazzled vest and pulled what looked like a jeweled flask from an inside pocket. He took a sip of whatever was inside and then handed it off to Tempest.
She sniffed at it for a second and recoiled from the strength of the odor. They might not have the typical spirits here on this planet, but she knew when something was meant to inebriate her.
"Fuck it." Tempest pressed the flask to her lips and took a long swig. IT burned on the way down.
She handed the flask back to Rynax.
"Fuck?" Rynax tilted his head to the side. "What does this word mean?"
Tempest giggled. The effects of the thraqen alcohol were already starting to spread through her body. ""It’s a bad word. Not really something I should be saying."
"Why?"
"It’s...I don’t know...vulgar."
"Oh...I love vulgarities. Tell me what it means."
"Honestly, it can be used in many different contexts. It can be used when you are upset about something or surprised; it can be used to describe sex. It can be used when you are angry with someone." She waved her hand in the air. "For example, fuck this, or fuck you, or fuck that."
Rynax chuckled, "I think I’m going to have great use for that word."
"Now who is being the bad influence?" Tempest reached for the flask again and took another sip.
"How about we be a bad influence on each other?"
Tempest nodded her head. She was tired of being good. Tired of being exactly what everyone expected of her. She wondered if Dron had felt like this while he was here. Wondered if he lived his life worrying about whatever everyone else was thinking he would do? It was a horrible way to live.
"Dron really told you to watch out over me?" Tempest questioned.
"He absolutely did. I told him it was a dumb idea, but I’m thinking it could be fun. It’s been a while since I got the chance to show an Omega the way I live. You’re in for a treat. That is if you can put just a little trust in me." Rynax peered at her, waiting for Tempest to make her decision.
"And if I say no?" Tempest lifted an eyebrow.
"Then I’ll leave you back here to cry your eyes out. You’re not in harm’s way; maybe a little pathetic, but you won’t die.
Pathetic! "Temepst screeched. "I’ll have you know I’m going through a life-altering event. I get to cry."
"I never said you didn’t."
"I’m not pathetic." Tempest wiped her face again.
"Of course not." Rynax said just to placate her.
"And what happens if I say yes?"
"If you say yes, I’ll show you exactly what you’ve been missing out here on Thraqe. The places not even your dear Dron would think to take you. The real Thraqe."
Tempest thought about it for a second. This could be a really bad idea. He could be taking her somewhere and then putting her in danger. But she didn’t think that was the kind of man Rynax was. She couldn’t tell for sure, of course. How many times had she sat in her house watching true crime documentaries about people who seemed to be the most upstanding people only to find out that they were serial killers? Ted Bundy, anyone?"
Still she was tired of playing this part Tired of being strong for everyone else when she felt like she was breaking apart on the inside. She wanted to let loose. Wanted to have a little fun, and Rynax was promising her that.
She had to take a chance. Had to risk it.
"Even if I wanted to go with you, we wouldn’t get far." She lifted her device. "Gerax and Mexyn are tracking my every move. I’m surprised they haven’t burst around the corner already to search for me."
"Oh, that can be taken care of. Only if you can put a little trust in me. If it makes you feel any better, if anything happens to you while you’re in my care, I’ll be spending the rest of my life in the black cells. I’m too pretty to be without sunlight for that long. I would rather not let that happen."
"Well, that works out for me because I’d rather nothing happen to me either."
"So are we doing this?" Rynax put his hand out and waited for Tempest to take it.
There were so many things that could go wrong with what she was about to do. She could wind up somewhere and not be able to get back. She could have to fight off an alpha where she knew she was clearly no match.
She could die.
On the other hand, she could finally have a moment’s peace. She could stop thinking about Dron and whether or not he was safe for a few moments. She could actually have some fun.
Tempest felt horrible that she was willing to go through these extremes just to put Dron out of her mind for even just a little bit, but she knew if she didn’t, she’d go out of her mind. The grief would take over, and who knew what Dron would come home to when he did return? If he ever did.
She didn’t want that.
Going against all the red flags that were flying in her mind Tempest reached out and grabbed Rynax’s hand. He smirked at her as he tugged her in the opposite direction.
Tempest looked over her shoulder once as they got further and further away from the center of the town.
This was a bad idea, but it thrilled her.
Tempest could feel the weight of the day slowly dropping from her shoulders.
A new adventure. That’s all this was. Surely they would understand.
Surely this wouldn’t lead to anything else.
She’d be careful.
What could go wrong?
