Chapter 214: Chapter 214
Elara POV
We are all quietly sitting in the living room, each busy with our own thoughts, looking at Isolde as she finishes her third glass of whiskey.
Isolde has told us what happened three times, and I firmly believe he came here for the sole purpose of taking his children.
He came alone, he did not ask about me or his brothers, and he did not hurt Isolde. He had his hands on her and could have easily killed her, but he did not. Sure, he scared the bejesus out of her, but how was he to know she was here? Hell, he does not even know we are here. However, after today, he knows where we are.
“We should leave tonight,” Maxim finally breaks the silence. “He must know now that we’re hiding here.”
“I want him to come,” Axel growls. “I owe him one, and I’m dying to give it to him.”
“It will take me a day or two to find a new place,” Braden sighs, pushing his fingers through his hair. “Trouble follows us where we go, and my allies are becoming more and more reluctant to help, especially since word got out about the test subjects.”
“Then we should go to a human motel again,” Monroe replies.
“I think we should stay,” I say, and everyone looks at me with surprise.
“Well, obviously Mason knows we’re here and will be waiting for him,” I explain. “Or he’ll think we moved on, because that’s what we’ve been doing while he was part of our group. Either way, I think we should risk it.”
“I agree with Elara,” Isolde says firmly. “The basement is perfect for me to work on my potions, and returning to the human city is too risky for me. The Council didn’t hesitate to send people after me.”
“The Council could easily find you here,” Kane reasons. “Let’s face it. Nowhere is safe for us anymore.”
“I’ll put a spell on this place,” Isolde replies. “Hell, I’ll triple spell it. Concealment, protection and shielded. Even if people know where we are, they can’t enter because of the shield.”
“Why didn’t you say that earlier?” Axel chuckles. “Problem solved. We’re staying here.”
“Good,” I nod. “Let’s start with our preparations to take down the facility.”
Mason POV
I lay naked in the back of the truck as Carlos and Tom drive me to Elara’s cottage. I did not plan to shift, and these two dumbasses do not have extra clothing. What kind of wolf does not have more clothes in their vehicle? It is like shifting 101.
On the bright side, the day was not a total loss. I found Elara, I learned they moved my kids, and I know they have a witch.
We park in front of Elara’s cottage, and I jump off.
“Make yourself comfortable,” I shout as Carlos and Tom follow me inside. “I’m getting dressed.”
“We’re not here for tea and cake, Mason,” Carlos shouts. “We want our money.”
“Well, we haven’t caught her, have we?” I ask, pulling on a pair of shorts and join them in the living room. “She wasn’t there.”
“Then we’ll go tonight and grab her,” Tom huffs. “I’m anxious to get out of this place.”
“They’ll be waiting for us tonight,” I reply, sitting on the sofa and making myself comfortable. “Or they’ll be gone. They stay on the move because it’s safer.”
“Dude, we’re not here to feed your obsession,” Carlos growls. “We want to finish the job and retire.”
“What obsession?” I smirk and shrug nonchalantly.
“The one with your brothers,” Tom answers. “Everybody knows about it.”
“And now you’re after their mate as well,” Carlos adds. “Probably just to piss off your brothers.”
“It’s not an obsession,” I reply stoically, even though my blood is boiling. These assholes do not know their ass from their elbows, and they dare to judge me. “It’s money. But you’re free to leave. I don’t give a shit. I’ll find another way to collect the bounty. I’ll send you a postcard from the Maldives while I enjoy my million.”
They look at each other, and I smile. I knew mentioning the money would captivate them.
“Fine,” Carlos replies, crossing his arms. “But you’d better have a solid plan.”
“They’re going to attack the facility,” I say, sitting up. “And we’re going to sit tight and wait for them to do it. We’ll get her after that when they let down their guard.”
“Or,” Tom says excitedly, holding up a finger and tapping it against his chin. “We can tell the Council about their plan. They’ll catch them and pay us.”
“That’s safer and easier,” Carlos agrees.
“Because Dumb and Dumber,” I say, and they puff their chests at my insult, but I do not care. “We all benefit from destroying the facility. That’s where they create those monsters, and we can’t fight them. So, they help us by destroying the place, and we help ourselves by grabbing an exhausted she-wolf after the attack and collecting our money.”
“Yeah, that sounds solid,” Tom nods, looking at Carlos for approval.
“How are we supposed to know when they’ll attack?” Carlos asks, narrowing his eyes.
“Surveillance, Carlos,” I exhale deeply, and stand up. “We watch them, and when they move, we move.”
“I’ll return to the cottage and take the first shift,” Tom suggests.
“You can relax,” I smile. “I know how they think. They won’t go without a solid plan and proper preparation. They won’t do a thing until tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Carlos nods. “Do you have beer?”
“Sure,” I smile, but I do not miss the look they share, and an ominous feeling settles into my gut.
These men are not to be trusted. I bet they already plotted how to kill me and keep the bounty for themselves. Well, the joke is on them, because so have I.
