Chapter 197: Chapter 197

Mason POV 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

The Goddess knows I love that woman, but for fuck’s sake, she is infuriating. She keeps risking her life for the sake of others. I wish she would direct that risk towards our relationship.

Maybe this is a good thing. She is placing herself in a ridiculously dangerous position, and it will be up to me to get her out of it. I am sure as fuck not calling her mates to help. I will be her hero.

I run from house to house, telling people to get out and spread the word. Some of them believe me, others laugh in my face, but I do not care. I did my part; if those monsters eat them, it will be on them.

Finally, I reach the truck, and I sigh inwardly when I see Mindy’s tear-stricken face. Goddess, she is such a wimp. It is hard to believe she and Elara are friends. Elara does not cry over everything that scares her.

“Where’s Elara?” Mindy asks when I open the door.

“At her place,” I reply brusquely. “I’m going there now.”

“You mean, we are,” Kane says behind me, and I turn around.

Kane, Axel, Braden, and Monroe are glaring at me with glowing eyes, and instantly, I am pissed off, because I wanted to rescue Elara without them.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I growl, but I know the answer. Loyal lapdog Maxim must have called them the second we split up.

“Helping our mate,” Axel replies nonchalantly. “That shouldn’t be a surprise to you.”

“At least, it wouldn’t have been if you kept us informed,” Kane sneers.

“Like I had the time,” I argue. “Besides, have you forgotten that the sole purpose of those things is to destroy you? So, accuse me all you like, I tried to help and do what’s best for everyone.”

“You shouldn’t break your pretty little head about us,” Axel hisses. “Especially not when it concerns us and our mate.”

“Hey!” Mindy snaps, and we all turn to her in surprise. “Can we continue the pissing contest after we saved Elara?”

“This isn’t over,” Kane glares at me, turns around and walks to a truck. Wait ... they have a truck?

“Where did you get that?” I ask, unable to contain my curiosity.

“I stole it,” Braden replies, and I exhale deeply. Great. As if we do not have enough to hide from, those fools stole a truck. Soon, we will have the human police to deal with as well.

“Morons,” I mutter under my breath, get into my truck, and start the engine.

Elara POV

I shift on the branch I am sitting, careful not to fall out of the tree. I know I have been here only a few minutes, but it feels like an eternity. The fire is dying, and I know I only have minutes left.

I have no fucking idea how I am getting out of this alive, but there is something peculiar about these things. They could have jumped the fire and climbed the tree already; instead, they are just sitting there, staring at me. Either they are scared of the fire, which I doubt, since one actually crossed it, or there is something wrong with them. Maybe their brains ceased. If that is the case, I should make a run for it.

I move as if I want to climb down, and they instantly stand.

“Fuck,” I mutter, making myself comfortable in the tree again. Their brains are still working.

I look around for ideas to get out of this mess when I notice him ... Gustav. His eyes are twinkling with evil as he walks closer, but the subjects do not even stir.

“Well,” Gustav scoffs, looking at the dead subject. “I should’ve known a hybrid would figure out how to kill them.”

“Yay, me,” I sneer, sarcastically.

“You know,” Gustav says thoughtfully. “I’m going to make you one of them, and then you can be their leader.”

“Sure,” I smile. “I’ll lead the rebellion against you.”

“First, I’ll cut out your tongue,” he glares at me.

“Don’t worry,” I smile sweetly. “I can still flip you off with my middle finger, and if you cut that off, I’ll learn Morse code and blink it to you. Regardless, you can go fuck yourself.”

A bright red glow creeps up his neck to his ears and cheeks, but he maintains eye contact. The subjects suddenly stir and walk to the tree in unison as if they received an order. That is when it hits me. Gustav can control them with his thoughts. They can mind link!

“That’s why they haven’t killed me,” I say to Gustav. “You want me alive.”

Gustav smiles, and the subjects are now at the tree.

“But I guess you’ve changed your mind,” I continue, my eyes on the subjects. I cannot figure out his plan. If he wanted me dead, those things would have been right beside me already.

“It’s an option,” he hisses. “I’m still deciding whether you’re worth the trouble.”

“I’d rather be dead than become one of your disgusting pets,” I scoff, rolling my eyes.

“Elara,” Kane mind links me. “We’re almost there.”

“No!” I reply urgently. “Gustav’s here, and he can mind link with the subjects. If he sees you, he’ll send them after you.”

“We’ll figure something out,” Axel replies. “But we’re not leaving you here to die.”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” I reply dryly. “Gustav doesn’t want me dead; he wants me to join his subjects.”

“That’s not happening,” Kane growls. “Hang tight, we’ll be there soon.”

“Bring fire,” I reply.

“So, Gustav,” I look at the disgusting old man. “I always wondered, do Council members have dicks, or do they remove them once you accept the position?”

“You disrespectful little shit!” He shouts, pointing a finger at me. “For that, you won’t die. You’ll pray for death once I’m done with you.”

“You want to bet?” I smile.
