Chapter 129: Chapter 129

Axel POV

I storm into the cabin and find Kane tucking in the twins, planting a butterfly kiss on each baby’s head. For a split second, an image of me smashing his head against the wall flashes through my mind, and I look away.

Fucking Mason! I blame him for this thought. Everything was perfect before he showed up. Well ... almost perfect. Things were a little rocky after our memories were restored. Elara and Kane reconnected faster than we did, and I can feel it. See it. Sense it. And it is terrifying me.

I cannot tell if I am paranoid or if it is real. I knew Mason was a threat, but Kane? It cannot be true. Okay, so Kane is not actually doing anything, but I do not know how Elara truly feels. She had feelings for Mason when she lived in Stillwood, who can say those feelings will not return? And she and Kane were alone at her mother’s place. They could have connected there, and I would not have known about it.

“What’s up with you?” He frowns when he looks at me.

“Nothing,” I huff, slumping into the couch. “It’s been a fucked-up day, that’s all.”

“Fucked up is an understatement,” Kane sighs, crashing on the couch beside me. “Hopefully, this event will keep Mason occupied long enough and distract him from looking at Isaac.”

“Hey,” I turn to face him. “Do you ...”

“Guys,” Elara interrupts me, and we look at her. She looks and smells delicious in an oversized t-shirt and wet hair. “Does anyone want something to eat?”

“I’m good,” I mumble, turning away from her. Our conversation is still fresh in my mind, and after talking to Mason, I am more convinced I am not imagining things.

“No, thank you,” Kane smiles, and I am instantly irked. Can he just stop charming her for a second?

“Okay,” she replies. “Good night.”

“Yeah,” I say, standing up and grabbing a pillow. “I’m going to sleep, too.”

I through the pillow next to the twins and pull the blanket over myself. I am not in the least tired, but I am done talking to any adult in this cabin.

Elara POV

I sit up abruptly and look around, but I do not see anything. Something woke me, but I do not see anything. Motionless, I peek my ears and listen for anything.

There! I heard it again. Just before I can jump out of bed to investigate, a figure stands in my door.

“Goddess, Kane!” I hiss. “You scared the shit out of me.”

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, closing the door behind him and coming to sit beside me on the bed. “I couldn’t sleep. Mason is snoring.”

“So, you decided it would be nice to wake me?” I ask, frowning.

“Not on purpose,” he replies, and I can see him smiling in the sliver of moonlight through the window. “I checked on the kids, and then I came to check on you. I wouldn’t have even come in if you hadn’t spoken to me.”

“Oh, so now it’s my fault that you’re robbing me of my sleep?” I tease.

“A little, yeah,” he chuckles, taking my hand.

Suddenly, I am acutely aware of him in my room. His muscular arms and shoulders, his charming smile, and his overwhelming scent. I groan inwardly, pushing my knees together. Why am I in need of him again? All I want is to rip his boxers off and have my way with him.

“Axel’s in a bad place,” I say, hoping it will get my hormones under control.

“I know,” Kane nods. “Yesterday exhausted him.”

“I wish I could say or do something to make him feel better,” I sigh.

“Speaking of saying things,” Kane says thoughtfully, looking at me. “Do you remember the day before you left? You were sick in bed, and I came to visit you.”

“How can I forget?” I reply softly. “It was the day I learned I was pregnant with Stella, and that I had to leave to protect her.”

“You told me you forgave us, and that you’re no longer mad,” he continues. “Did you mean it?”

“Of course I did,” I whisper urgently. “I would’ve never ... Kane, if I were still mad, we wouldn’t be here.”

“Elara, I never apologised,” he says, his hand trailing up my arm, over my collarbone and resting his palm against my cheek. “Axel and I were true assholes. We treated you like shit, and made you feel insignificant.”

“Kane, that water under the bridge, and ...”

“And it needs to be said,” he cuts me off. “You deserve so much more than just an apology. I will spend the rest of my days making up for it. I’m really sorry, Elara. I’m sorry we chose Alice. I’m sorry for screaming and humiliating you. I’m sorry I was such a childish, giant douche.”

Speechless, I stare at him as warmth spreads through me. I never expected an apology. Especially not such a sincere and heartfelt apology. I forgave them when I chose to leave.

“Thank you,” I whisper. “This means everything.”

“I’m going back to bed,” he sighs. “Or more accurately, back to the floor.”

“Kane,” I hold him back when he wants to stand up.

Wordlessly, I take his hand, pulling him closer until our lips find each other. Sparks ignite instantly, and our soft, lingering kiss turns into a passionate hunger. I lay back against the pillows, pulling him down with me.

I curl my fingers into his silky, black hair and revel in the touch of his soft lips on mine. He nibbles on my bottom lip, and I gasp, allowing his tongue to explore my mouth.

Our legs get tangled as we push our bodies closer to each other, and his erection presses through his boxers against my stomach.

Heat explodes in my gut, spreading down, and I moan against his lips when his hand slips underneath my shirt and cups my breast.

“I love kissing you,” he whispers, toying with my nipple and sending shivers through me. “But I only came here to apologise.”

“I know,” I sigh, digging my nails into his back, pulling him closer. “And I accepted it.”

“Then I should go,” he says, kissing me tenderly.

“Good night,” I sigh, scraping my nails down his back and over his ribs.

“Or,” Kane pulls me closer, kissing my neck. “I could stay?”
