Chapter 205: Chapter 175: Bloody Battle of Thermopylae 4
Wood frowned and looked up to see a massive bronze pot. From his angle, it was all he could see, and he caught a whiff of a strange smell.
Wood ignored it and continued to climb. He could have just scaled the wall in a single rush, but if he did, he’d be without his comrades and easily overwhelmed.
Besides, if he rushed ahead and got trapped without securing a path forward, the Soldiers following him would be in dire straits.
Just as Wood was climbing, the golden pot... tipped over.
"Whoa! What is this stuff?"
"It stinks! What is this?!"
Due to inertia, the liquid from the pot didn’t hit Wood. Instead, it all splashed down onto the Extraordinary Soldiers below.
By the looks of it, the scalding temperature of the golden liquid wasn’t enough to harm the Extraordinary Soldiers. This was just as Robson had expected; after all, even the weakest Extraordinary was still Extraordinary.
Even a Bronze-rank was on a completely different level from a mortal. Their bodies were comprehensively enhanced.
The physical damage was minimal, but the psychological assault was overwhelming. Some of the golden liquid had splashed onto Wood’s face. Now, even someone as slow-witted as Wood understood.
Once he realized, Wood’s expression soured as if he had just eaten shit.
"Damn it!"
’So this is what civilized people are like?’ Wood suddenly felt he might not be so barbaric after all.
Wood suddenly heard the sound of something tearing through the air behind him. He turned to see that the Beastmen had started launching their javelins.
....
"I told you, it’s no use! Keep... no, wait!"
"Quick! Take cover at the base of the wall!"
Captain Jason was about to ask his superior to bring up the ranged troops when he saw the Beastmen on the other side preparing to throw something.
Captain Jason reacted in a flash, immediately turning and shouting orders to his Soldiers.
At Captain Jason’s command, the Soldiers immediately pressed themselves tight against the wall.
Sure enough, moments later, the Beastman Military Array unleashed a volley of several thousand javelins.
Captain Jason watched the sky-darkening rain of javelins, thankful for his early warning. Otherwise, his squad would have been joining him to meet the Lord of Dawn.
But he quickly noticed something was off. Most of the javelins were arcing around their position. The few that flew toward them looked like stray shots.
"We can’t hold them! Quick, get the Extraordinary Lords over here!"
Captain Jason instantly realized who this was paving the way for.
...
Once the Beastmen launched their javelins, the elite quality of the First Regiment was no longer just data on a page—it became reality. Captain Jason was a prime example of the First Regiment’s captains.
Robson’s system for evaluating Non-commissioned Officers didn’t just consider a soldier’s class level.
When the Beastmen javelins flew, nearly every Non-commissioned Officer in the First Regiment made the same decision at the exact same time, ordering their Soldiers to take cover behind the crenellations without a moment’s hesitation.
A volley of over a thousand javelins resulted in a mere two casualties. Robson didn’t see this on his panel; he saw it with his own eyes. Two Extraordinary Knights from the Fengman Knight Order had failed to dodge in time on the wall and had been struck in the arm.
To this moment, Robson’s panel remained a sea of green, filled with the achievements of the Frankish Border Watchers. Without a doubt, the Magic Crossbows from Marquis Oscillate were proving their incredible power.
"Let’s go," Robson said. "This wave of Beastman Extraordinary Infantry is the main objective. It’s our turn to step in."
Valentino nodded, donned her helmet, and descended from the gatehouse without another word.
Meanwhile, taking advantage of the covering fire from his comrades, Wood successfully scaled the wall.
The moment he hauled himself over the top, ready to unleash carnage, he found himself facing rows of Soldiers in a tight shield wall, their longspears leveled directly at him.
"You’re courting death!"
Wood scoffed and let out a bellow, drawing his scimitar. He found an unorthodox angle and, with a single swing, sliced clean through the heads of all the spears before him.
Seeing this, the human Soldiers opposite showed no undue surprise or fear. The Infantry whose spears had been broken began to draw their longswords, while the Frankish Bow and Crossbowmen behind them calmly pulled their triggers. Dozens of bolts shot toward Wood.
Wood initially paid them no mind, but then he saw several bolts were aimed straight for his eyes.
"AARGH!"
Wood’s nerves screamed. A bolt plunged into his left eye. A second one struck it like a hammer, brutally driving the first one deeper. Even more bolts—at least a dozen—flew toward his right eye. Fortunately, as a right-handed swordsman, he instinctively used his blade to shield it just in time.
At this range, Robson’s Frankish Border Watchers could pick out an enemy’s vital spots on their own.
No matter how powerful one’s Combat Aura, the eyes were still a living being’s most fragile part. Combat Aura provided reinforcement at best, but even an enhanced eye couldn’t defend against such a powerful attack. The only exception was if one reached the Gold tier, where the Life Seed would sprout and the body would undergo a complete sublimation.
"HSSS..." Wood sucked in a sharp breath. Agonizing pain seared his brain, and for a crucial moment, his reactions slowed.
"Quick! Charge!"
"For the Empire!"
Wood’s mind could barely function. Fortunately, the Beastman Extraordinary Infantry surged forward to support him.
"Quick! Bow and Crossbowmen, fire!"
Wood vaguely heard the command from the humans opposite him.
Indeed, Hans’s commander, Orosen, was a Frankish Border Watcher—and one of the very first, at that.
