Chapter 184: Be At Ease

The main hall of Skyedge had been built to seat a sect at the height of its pride, and for the first time since the ambush it looked the part again, lamps lit down its length, the council in their seats, a hundred imperial guards lining the walls in quiet steel.

Xuan came off the last stair and felt the room notice him before a single face turned.

It was a small thing, the way a drop in air pressure is a small thing just before weather. Two months ago he had walked these halls as a Stage Seven disciple, respectable and promising and nothing that made a Foundation elder look up from his tea. He was not that anymore. His Qi had gone deep and quiet and dense as a struck bell, and it pressed on the space around him now whether he wanted it to or not, the weight of a man standing on the last stair of Qi Refining with his palm flat against the next door.

Elder Ren caught it first. The old swordsman’s one remaining hand paused on his cup, and his eyes lifted to Xuan with the flat, weighing attention of a man recalculating a number he had thought he already knew.

Across the hall, the Frostmoon disciples who had watched him take their prodigy apart felt it next, and a low current ran through their ranks. Even Lin Zhen, mid-sentence with the woman in the seat of honor, let the sentence hang a beat too long.

[ There it is, ] Mira murmured, thoroughly pleased. [ You walk into a room full of cultivators putting out heat like a little furnace, and every last one of them just quietly revised their opinion of you. ]

’I did mean to do that,’ he thought. ’Two months of it. In a stone box. Smelling like a dead man.’

[ Half of power is the face you keep while the whole room works out that you have it. ]

Lin Zhen rose as Xuan reached the floor, and the room’s attention swung back where it should, onto the patriarch of Skyedge. Half-gray, straight-backed despite the bad leg, he wore his own hall like a coat he had owned for years.

"Ah. My son." There was pride in the two words, carried lightly, and it told Xuan the old man had felt the change as well and had decided to enjoy it. "Your Highness, may I present Lin Xuan. Forgive his delay. He has spent the season in closed-door cultivation, and I am told he has only just come up for air."

The woman in the seat of honor turned to look at him, and Xuan got his first real sight of the Third Princess of Tianheng.

She was younger than he had pictured, and gentler. No jewels worth the name, a traveling robe in muted imperial colors, her hair pinned plainly.

She had a round, kind face and warm eyes and a smile that arrived without effort and looked, for all the world, completely genuine. She waited among a hundred armored guards and all the strain of an imperial visit like someone shown into a friend’s good room to wait. Everything about her said harmless. Everything about her said be at ease.

Xuan did not believe a word of it.

[ Careful with this one. ] The humor had drained out of Mira entirely. [ I have watched her since you came down the stairs. She has read every face in this room, counted every exit, and priced every elder on your council, all of it behind a smile like somebody’s favorite aunt. That is not a kind woman who happens to be a princess, Xuan. That is a very dangerous one who worked out a long time ago that kindness opens more doors than fear. ]

"So this is the young man the whole province cannot stop talking about." Her voice came warm and unhurried, a small laugh tucked inside it. "The one who won Yuncheng, and took back two mountains a grown sect could not hold, and vanished for two whole months just as I came all this way to meet him." The smile turned rueful, almost shy. "I will admit I took the timing a little to heart, Master Lin. Be honest with me. Did someone warn you I was coming, and did you climb into a cave to get away from me?"

’Any advice?’ he asked Mira.

[ Tell her the truth. She will catch a lie and think less of you for handing her a bad one. Just do not tell her all of it. ]

He bowed his head the exact depth the moment asked for, and let a little of his own dry humor off its leash.

"Your Highness, if I had known someone this important was climbing my mountain, I would have washed a great deal sooner." A ripple went around the hall at that. "The timing was an accident, and an expensive one, it turns out. I managed to keep a princess waiting in my father’s hall while I was face-down in a cave, which is not the introduction I would have picked for myself."

The princess laughed, a bright, real, delighted sound, and for a breath the whole strained room let its shoulders down with her.

"Oh, I like him," she confided to Lin Zhen, as if passing a small secret across the table. "You did not warn me he was funny. Funny is a great deal more dangerous than talented." She turned back to Xuan, and though the smile never slipped, something behind the warm eyes narrowed to a fine point and fixed on him alone, the rest of the crowded hall quietly falling away. "Sit with me a while, Master Lin. You and I have a great deal to discuss, and not much time before the world turns loud. I came a very long way for this particular conversation."

And there it was, under the aunt’s smile, the thing Mira had warned him about, looking out at him plainly for one unguarded breath before the warmth folded back down over the top of it.

’Loud,’ he thought. ’She means the war.’

[ Yup. She means the war. And she did not climb a mountain and wait two months in your father’s hall to recruit your father, Xuan. Patriarchs are cheap. She waited for you. ] A pause, low and careful. [ The real question is why a Golden Core princess believes one Qi Refining swordsman is worth the whole trip. So go find out. Slowly, carefully, counting your words on the way in. ]
