Chapter 160: Tell Me More

Su Qingyue did not return to her room at once.

She stopped beneath the edge of the corridor roof, and watched Lin Xuan step into the courtyard with his sword in hand.

He had changed after Frostmoon left.

Not in a dramatic way. Lin Xuan simply walked into the open space, drew half a breath, and became difficult to interrupt.

That was more interesting.

The first circulation began quietly. Qi moved under his skin, faint at first, a pale current threading through the body of a Qi Refining Stage 7 cultivator who should not have looked half as steady as he did after the previous days. His shoulders lowered. His grip adjusted around Marrow Dragon’s hilt. The sword answered with a low hum that seemed to settle into his bones rather than the air.

Qingyue’s eyes followed the movement.

His robe shifted with each breath, revealing the line of muscle beneath fabric where the shoulder met the arm. His body was not built like the ornamental heirs she had seen at banquets, all polished bearing and soft hands hidden under silk.

Xuan’s strength had edges left by training, road dust, bruises, and the stubborn refusal to die properly when the world had already made space for his failure.

He lifted the sword.

The motion drew a clean arc through the morning air.

Qingyue felt her attention narrow despite herself.

There was restraint in him now. Yesterday, he had been heir, son, fiancé, spy-master without admitting it, and whatever other troublesome thing he was when he stared at empty space and listened to someone no one else could hear. This morning, he was only a cultivator trying to carve the next step into his body.

It suited him.

Perhaps more than it should have.

A faint line of warmth touched the back of her neck, irritating mostly because she understood exactly what caused it. She looked away for half a breath, found the opposite wall deeply unhelpful, and looked back.

Xuan changed stance. The hem of his robe pulled against his thigh as he shifted weight, controlled and economical. Qi gathered along the blade, thinned, broke, and gathered again. He frowned, not with frustration, but with the kind of focus that had no patience left for anything decorative.

’So that is what you look like when you stop pretending everything is a joke.’

The thought was not fair. He did not pretend everything was a joke. He simply used humor the way others used a sleeve knife - kept close, drawn when needed, rarely harmless.

That made it worse. Because now the knife was put away, and what remained was harder to ignore.

Qingyue folded her hands inside her sleeves. She had nothing to do.

That was the strange part. Frostmoon had left. Her disciples had not arrived yet. Her room had been claimed but not properly arranged. Skyedge had not given her duties for the morning, and no one had come to ask for her opinion, challenge her presence, or insult her sect.

For a woman raised on schedules, duties, and people making foolish decisions in need of correction, the emptiness felt almost indecent.

Lin Xuan drew another breath, and Qi pulsed down the sword.

Qingyue watched until she realized she had been watching for longer than dignity required.

That was enough.

She turned and entered her room.

Lian was inside, sleeves tied back, sorting through the bundle Madam Lin Hua had given them with the grave focus of an alchemist handling volatile ingredients. Bedding had been folded on one side. A spare screen leaned against the wall. The table had already been dragged away from the center, exposed as even worse than Qingyue remembered.

Lian straightened at once. "Lady Qingyue. Is something wrong?"

"No."

"Do you need anything?"

Qingyue stepped farther inside.

The temperature in the room dropped with her. Her Qi always carried winter with it, and after watching Xuan train, her control had loosened by a thread. A thin breath of frost crept along the corner of the nearest shelf before she pulled it back.

Lian’s fingers paused on the bedding.

For a brief instant, the maid’s shoulders tightened.

Qingyue saw the shiver before Lian mastered it.

’It feels as if winter has walked into the room.’ Lian thought.

Qingyue sat beside the low table that had not yet been condemned.

"You may continue," she said.

Lian hesitated. "With the room?"

"Yes, with what else?"

"Of course."

The maid resumed her work, though her hands moved with slightly more awareness now. Qingyue watched her arrange bedding, check seams, inspect storage boxes, and remove a folded cloth that had apparently failed some private standard no one else could see.

Lian worked without complaint, but nothing about her felt servile in the dull way Qingyue had seen among certain sect households. She was respectful, yes. Formal. Careful. But there was steel under it, hidden behind practical hands and lowered eyes.

That, too, was interesting.

"How long have you served him?" Qingyue asked.

Lian paused. "Young Master Xuan?"

"There is another man across the hall?"

"No, Lady Qingyue." Lian lowered her head slightly. "I have served him since before his recovery."

"Before Yuncheng."

"Yes, long before that."

Su Qingyue’s fingers rested over the edge of her sleeve. Her voice stayed even, but her attention sharpened. "Then you know how he was during the years he was crippled. And before them."

Lian’s hands slowed on the folded bedding.

"Yes, Lady Qingyue."

"Tell me," Qingyue said. "What was he like before?"

Lian looked at her then, carefully. She was a maid, but not a foolish one. "Does Young Master Lin Xuan interest you so much?"

Qingyue did not look offended. If anything, the question pleased her by being honest.

"We are betrothed," she said. "If possible, I would like to know everything about my future husband. Not only the parts he chooses to show me."

Lian lowered her gaze again, though her expression had softened by a small degree.

"Then, if Lady Qingyue does not mind, we can speak while I finish arranging the room."

Qingyue inclined her head.

"Please," she said. "I would like that very much."
