Chapter 373: Signs That People Were Living Here
Before Rok set out in earnest to assault Spica Castle.
As Rok departed on his campaign leading a massive force, Shaitan, Luna, and Eila hastily gathered in one place to devise a new plan. The three had convened at the hub via portal and needed to reach a conclusion in very little time before returning to their posts.
"We are of one mind and one body. Agreed?"
"Even if we fight, we fight in bed. Understood?"
"Of course. No objections."
Even if they fought, it would be in bed. They would compete over who could please their master more; none of them wanted to lose a war because they were too busy keeping each other in check.
"If we start fighting among ourselves, our master will certainly cut one of us loose."
"Exactly. Especially if jealousy during a war like this leads someone to withhold troops..."
"Even if he doesn’t show it on the surface, he’ll be deeply disappointed inside."
The three shared their thoughts on the Rok they’d observed so far, and all three were of the same mind.
"Each sector has a skeleton crew stationed in it, but it could still be dangerous. That human named Levis Ann is on par with me, maybe even stronger."
"She may be the Holy Knight Commander, but her individual combat ability is on the weaker side. If someone that level is comparable to Luna... I can’t imagine how terrifying it would be if the entire Holy Knights came. Their fighting strength would rival the Aries Knight Order that my father leads."
"On par with the knight order led by the Holy Sword’s Hero... Then we absolutely must subdue her."
The three looked at one another and nodded.
"""We just need to capture that bitch and offer her up."""
If they captured a new woman and presented her, they would lose that moment to the hostage. But Rok rewarded merit accordingly. Even if his body was exhausted, Shaitan had certain methods to extract her reward from him by force.
"Then the question is where Levis Ann goes."
"Let’s do it this way. Eila, we’ll support each other."
Luna and Eila made a pact.
If the dungeon came under attack, Eila would lead her forces out onto the plains and raid the enemy’s camp, striking their rear.
If Ras Vegas came under attack, Luna would lead the elves through the portal to join the fight.
Shaitan would serve as the relay between them, deploying troops on the spot.
"If we’re improvising in a crisis, our master won’t have any complaints."
Rok wanted a minimum garrison posted at each dungeon, but stubbornly guarding only your own sector while another one crumbled would be foolish.
"If we make use of the portals already open, we can move troops quickly enough. So when the time comes, here’s what we do..."
The three put their heads together and pooled their wisdom. Building on the operational manual Rok had left behind, they devised several contingency plans for improvising on each battlefield.
"...If enemy forces converge on Ras Vegas and the walls are breached, do this."
Eila laid out her strategy for Luna and Shaitan.
"If our master takes all of Spica Castle hostage... we will take a thousand soldiers of the subjugation force prisoner. Using Ras Vegas as the bait."

Clang! Clang!
Spear and sword collided. The spear flying the Goddess Church’s banner swung wide to the side, and a silver sword traced an arc as it deflected the spear upward.
"What the hell are you doing?! You turned the elves against us over something this petty?!"
"That’s not what happened!"
Levis Ann was thoroughly on the defensive. She swung her spear only to fend off Luna, who clung to her relentlessly; she had no intention whatsoever of actually hurting Luna.
"Don’t be ridiculous! We never touched the forest!"
"Yes you did! Our queen said so herself!"
"There must have been some kind of misunderstanding!!"
"Are you saying our queen is wrong?!"
"Ngh...!"
Levis Ann had sunk into a quagmire. She had no idea where the misunderstanding had come from. One thing was certain: the elves were clearly siding with the Demon King’s Army. And the reason they had sided with the Demon King’s Army was because of her. Levis Ann was on the verge of losing her mind.
[Imperial Year XXXX. When the dungeon subjugation force led by Levis Ann of the Goddess Church’s Holy Knights trespassed into the Elven Forest without permission, the elves joined the Demon King’s Army.]
For ages, the elves had taken no one’s side. But if they ended up fighting for the Demon King’s Army, the catalyst was sure to be recorded in the history books. Levis Ann did not want to leave that kind of disgrace for future generations.
"R-right! You were on their side from the very beginning! You’d already joined the Demon King’s Army long ago!"
"What kind of nonsense is that?"
"The dark elves in the dungeon are the proof! The Elven Forest offered up a handful of dark elves to the Demon King’s Army to save itself! You sold out your own people!"
"Have you lost your mind...!"
Luna’s temper flared at Levis Ann’s baseless accusations. Levis Ann was rambling now, hurling one wild theory after another at Luna.
"Did you think the Demon King’s Army was going to win?! They say elves are cowards; you were afraid of being violated by the dungeon’s monsters! Twenty of your own, handed over to the orcs so the rest could survive with your purity intact. Aren’t you ashamed before the Goddess?!"
"I’m filing a formal protest with the Church over this."
"Go ahead! File your protest! And I’ll expose every last truth about the elves to the Church! The elves..."
Levis Ann shrieked as she swung her spear.
"...are whores who chose to spread their legs for the Demon King’s Army to survive!"
"You’re dead!!"
Luna leaped high again and swung her sword. Levis Ann quickly pulled back her spear and began running to escape Luna.
"Don’t you scurry away from me!"
"Get lost, orc broodmare!"
"You, I... Fine, you asked for it! I’m going to capture you... and turn you into an orc broodmare!"
"Hmph!"
Blade and spearhead clashed again, sending sparks flying. Levis Ann focused entirely on dodging and blocking Luna’s attacks while trying to push forward.
"As if I’d let you get away!"
"Move!"
Luna gave chase and Levis Ann fled, and the square was turning into a wasteland. But on closer inspection, Luna was blocking Levis Ann, and Levis Ann was struggling with everything she had to break through.
The portal.
"I’m going to destroy that portal! You harlot elf!"
"Like hell you will! I swear I’ll capture you and...!"
A flash of silver light sparked in Luna’s eyes.
"I’ll throw you into the training room myself!!"
And so began the game of cat and mouse between the one who would protect the portal and the one who would destroy it.

Meanwhile.
Soldiers scattered in every direction crept through the alleyways, surveying their surroundings.
"Any sign of enemy monsters hiding...?"
"Doesn’t look like it."
"Any sign of hostages being held?"
"None of that either."
"Then what traces are left, exactly?"
"Signs that monsters came and went, houses torn apart like they’d been ransacked, and... signs that people were living here until very recently."
The soldiers searched the empty houses and gathered a wealth of information. In particular, one young man among those who had lived in Zabiyaba found his own home and searched it; the information he uncovered was worth more than gold.
A diary.
The diary, presumably written by the young man’s older sister, contained content so shocking it had to be hushed up. The young man read the diary and fainted on the spot. The other soldiers carefully sealed the diary and hid it away.
"This place... is truly insane."
The soldiers were overcome with grief. If the diary’s contents were true, even sending a massive Church force to burn the entire city to the ground after the war would hardly be enough.
"Everyone here has gone mad."
It was fair to call this a place where humans had been reduced to beasts. And if things went wrong, the soldiers themselves could become beasts too.
Thwip!
An arrow lodged itself in the nape of a soldier who had just been looking around. Aimed precisely at the gap where armor didn’t cover, the arrowhead sent the soldiers in the alley scrambling together, raising their shields.
"He’s done for, instant kill!"
"Damn it, where did that come from?!"
The soldiers were thrown into a panic. They glanced upward just in case, but there were no flying monsters above.
Fwip!
Another arrow came flying. This time it buried itself in a thigh exposed below a shield.
"Aagh!"
The soldier dropped to one knee on the arrow-pierced leg, crying out in pain. The tip of the arrowhead was coated in some kind of sticky red slime.
"Poison?!"
"N-no! That’s an aphrodisiac! It has to be!"
"Aphrodisiac?!"
"It’s a stimulant!!"
The soldiers went pale. One sharp-eyed soldier pinpointed the enemy’s position.
"There, the two-story house!!"
The soldiers fixed their gazes on the second-floor window of the building directly ahead. The shadow of a black bird-headed figure ducked hastily below the window frame.
"Moving in!"
The soldiers sealed off the entrance. Shield-bearing soldiers blocked incoming arrows while three swordsmen slipped through the door together.
Thud. Thud.
No one was on the first floor. The three instinctively realized the creature was hiding on the second floor.
One, two, three.
"""Raaaah!!"""
The soldiers charged up the stairs with a battle cry. What awaited them was a sight too horrible to bear.
"Urgh!"
Two women in tatters barely covering their bodies huddled in the corner, trembling violently. In front of them stood a naked crow creature with its grotesque member fully erect, gripping a bow and swinging it around the room.
The women were in danger. The soldiers rushed forward and swung their swords at the crow creature.
"Gaaahk!!"
The crow creature offered no resistance and crumpled under the blades. The soldiers stabbed the naked creature several more times to make sure it wouldn’t fight back, finishing it off for certain.
Squelch. Squelch.
Red blood sprayed with every thrust. Two of the soldiers removed their helmets and knelt on one knee before the trembling women, extending their hands.
"You’re safe now. We’ve come to rescue you. We’re part of the subjugation force led by the Holy Knight Commander."
"Ah, ahh. Aaaaah..."
The women, hair wild and disheveled, threw their arms around the soldiers.
"Aaaaahh!! Haaah, waaaaaah!"
"P-please, calm down. It’s all right now. You’re safe."
As a nearly naked woman clung to him and wailed, the soldier looked flustered but gently patted her back.
"You filthy monster... Huh?"
Just as a soldier was about to sever the crow creature’s head, he noticed something strange.
Thump.
The crow head fell away from the creature. Beneath it was a human man; a man who had been abducted barely a day ago, who had marched out with them as part of the subjugation force. He lay dead with a gag stuffed in his mouth.
"Th-this is stra..."
Squelch!!
A spray of blood crossed the soldier’s vision as he turned around. The women who had been held captive now gripped daggers in their hands, having plunged them into the soldiers’ throats.
"Wh... what...?"
"What do you think? Improvising."
The woman who had been wailing moments ago pursed her lips lightly and tossed the dagger. The soldier threw his arm up to block it.
Thunk.
But he couldn’t dodge the dagger thrown by the other woman. He dropped to his knees, staring in disbelief at the blade buried in his solar plexus.
"H-how... why...?"
"Simple."
The woman wiped the blood spatter from her face and climbed on top of the man.
"Our legion is different from the rest of the Demon King’s Army... We have humans too."
"N-no... you can’t mean...!"
"That’s right. The people in the Andras masks? They’re all humans."
The woman mimed putting a mask on her head and pulled off the man’s trousers.
"Huh? Tch."
She compared the dagger to the man’s stiff member and clicked her tongue.
"This one’s too small to be of any use."
"So what do we do with him?"
"Ghoul feed."
"You heartless bit..."
Squelch.
The women moved fast. A hand swift as light pierced the back of the soldier’s neck.
"Heartless, he says. That’s a bit harsh."
The woman spat on the rapidly cooling soldier and tossed off her rags.
"Shorter than a dagger. Sis, I’ll head outside. You keep luring people in here. Got it?"
"Be careful. Don’t push yourself."
The naked woman hurriedly dressed in clothes she’d hidden inside a wardrobe. At the same time, she pulled an Andras mask that had been stuffed in the wardrobe over her head, picked up the severed man’s head, and leaped out the window.
Thump, thump, thump!
The stairs began to rumble. The remaining woman hastily gripped her dagger and pressed herself flat against the wall.
"Is every..."
Crash!
The window shattered as the crow creature fled. The woman clutching the dagger trembled violently and collapsed where she stood.
"Ah, ahh. Aaaaah..."
"Damn it...! One of those things did all this...?!"
The soldiers who had come upstairs were horrified by the carnage on the second floor. A few sharp-eyed soldiers sensed something was off, but,
"Aaaahh! D-don’t touch me! Goddess, save me! Kyaaaah!!"
"P-please, calm down! We’re here to rescue you!"
"Kyaaaaaah!!"
Faced with a woman shrieking in hysterics, they couldn’t keep their wits about them.
While Levis Ann fought Luna, the subjugation force suffered devastating losses as they began "rescuing" hostages one by one.
