Chapter 1849: Chapter 1849: Lost in the Wilderness (6)
The White Monkeys were numerous, and many people had been injured.
Everyone was caught off guard and panicked, falling into a disadvantage against these White Monkeys.
Chuzheng remained much calmer, kicking away each one that approached her.
The White Monkeys, seeing this, probably thought this target was too fierce and couldn’t be defeated, intelligently shifted their focus.
Xie Ningfeng and Li Tian were surrounded by White Monkeys, Xie Ningfeng guarded Li Tian, but inevitably got hurt.
"Run!" Brother Gao’s voice came from the front: "There are too many of them."
Xie Ningfeng protected Li Tian as they ran towards the main group, a White Monkey clawed at him, his arm blocked it, but his backpack was snatched away.
"The equipment!" Xie Ningfeng exclaimed.
"Let’s go!" Li Tian pulled Xie Ningfeng to run, not caring about the equipment.
-
The group was sprinting wildly through the weeds, with White Monkeys occasionally leaping behind them, creating a shockingly intense scene from afar.
The group didn’t know how long they’d been running before the sounds of pursuit stopped.
"It seems they’re not chasing us anymore."
"I can’t go on, I can’t run anymore."
The group stopped, with only the sound of wind behind them.
Confirming the White Monkeys hadn’t caught up, the group breathed a sigh of relief, some directly sat on the ground to catch their breath.
Those monkeys were terrifying as hell.
Their clothes could be ripped open easily, and with just one claw there was blood everywhere.
"Where did those damn monkeys come from?" Xiao Qiu asked, clutching his scratched arm: "Uncle Min, do you know?"
"I don’t know." Uncle Min shook his head.
Brother Gao frowned and raised his voice: "Is everyone okay?"
"My backpack was snatched."
"My backpack was snatched too."
The injuries were minor, but several backpacks were taken, some were small bags while others were whole backpacks.
"Let’s gather the remaining equipment."
In Chuzheng’s group, only Xie Ningfeng’s backpack was snatched, Lan Chen had a small backpack taken, but everything else was there.
Though Xie Ningfeng’s was snatched it didn’t matter, as Li Tian’s were still intact so they could share.
Chuzheng’s equipment was with Uncle Min, so there was no loss.
Soon Brother Gao finished the inventory.
"Food’s running short, but the equipment is sufficient."
"How much food is left?"
"According to our current consumption, no more than three days."
Three days...
This is not good news.
Brother Gao turned to Uncle Min: "Uncle Min, is it easy to find food here?"
"Yes." Uncle Min nodded: "When I used to collect herbs, I often ate things from the mountains, we won’t starve, and there’s a creek ahead with fish in it."
Upon hearing this, Brother Gao was relieved: "As long as we can find food, everyone treat their wounds first, rest for a while then continue."
The group helped each other with wounds.
Brother Gao glanced around, looking at Chuzheng leaning against a tree, scrutinizing her.
Everyone was in disarray, with clothes and hair messy even if they weren’t injured.
Only she, her clothes were untouched, still looking as if nothing had happened...
When he first saw her, this girl didn’t give off this impression at all.
Why the sudden change?
Was it all a disguise before?
Brother Gao grew wary, increasingly cautious of Chuzheng.
-
Li Tian bandaged Xie Ningfeng’s wound, her expression somewhat grim.
In the past, when going out with Lan Chen and others, some places were remote, wild mountains were normal, occasionally encountering some animals.
But never had they run into such a large group of creatures like today.
"What species are those White Monkeys?" Li Tian asked Xie Ningfeng.
Xie Ningfeng shook his head: "I’m not familiar with this... Does Chen know?"
Lan Chen, chewing on a stalk of grass, leaned against a stone, upon hearing this exclaimed: "How would I know, I have no fondness for monkeys at all."
Brother Gao’s group had some animal knowledge though.
However, he didn’t know what species the monkeys were either.
The chance of seeing an entirely white monkey was one in a hundred thousand, yet they had seen dozens.
Either it’s a new species undiscovered, or some other reason caused it.
The encounter with the monkeys had cast a shadow over everyone’s hearts.
Afraid of nearby danger, the group rested before continuing their journey.
-
One day later.
The group arrived at the creek Uncle Min mentioned, the water was crystal clear with small fish and shrimp.
Brother Gao instructed everyone to set up camp, and rest here for the night.
The group wasn’t in a rush to set up tents, they first relaxed in the water.
Chuzheng stood with arms crossed by the bank, showing no intention of getting into the water.
"Miss Liu, why don’t you get in the water and wash up?" Brother Gao approached, striking up a conversation.
"I won’t."
"Miss Liu seems a bit different from before."
Chuzheng glanced at him mocking: "How am I different?"
Brother Gao scrutinized her face, searching for any change but couldn’t see anything.
"Your demeanor and aura are different."
Chuzheng:"So what?" A change of heart, that’s why it’s different.
Brother Gao:"..."
This was what puzzled him, why question him back?
Why isn’t your answer within normal thinking?
"I’m just curious as to why there’s such a big change, can Miss Liu explain?"
"Why should I explain to you?" Chuzheng replied indifferently: "We’re merely strangers traveling together, I have not harmed you, you have no authority to demand answers from me."
Brother Gao:"..."
Having been thwarted several times, Brother Gao had to finally give up.
After Brother Gao left for less than a minute, a scream came from the creek.
Xiao Qiu was running stumbling on shore, tripping and crawling with hands and feet, shouting at those in the creek: "Get out of the water!!"
Those standing in the creek were confused, not knowing what had happened.
But soon the group reacted, regardless of the reason, they rushed out of the water first.
People scrambled up the bank.
"What happened?"
"What’s going on?"
The group approached Xiao Qiu, someone noticing Xiao Qiu’s entire foot was swollen, and he seemed to be in great discomfort.
Brother Gao squeezed through the crowd, squatting to check Xiao Qiu’s foot: "What’s going on?"
Xiao Qiu’s face was drenched in sweat: "I don’t know, I just felt something poke me, and my foot went numb."
It happened after getting out of the water.
Brother Gao found a red dot where Xiao Qiu felt the poke.
"Uncle Min, Uncle Min!"
"Hey."
Uncle Min returned carrying a pile of fruits, hearing his name he ran over: "What’s wrong, what’s wrong?"
"Quick, check Xiao Qiu. While in the water, he got poked by something and ended up like this."
Uncle Min leaned in for a closer look, looking troubled: "This... I don’t know either."
Uncle Min was an herbalist, able to diagnose simple injuries and recognize some poisons, but he hadn’t seen such a situation.
Li Tian clung to Xie Ningfeng’s arm, standing with Lan Chen on the outskirts, talking quietly.
"What’s in the water? Did you all see anything?"
"I didn’t notice, I don’t know..."
"Could it be a water snake?"
"Snake bites don’t look like that..."
"This is too dangerous..."
First those sudden monkeys, now suddenly being poked by something.
