Chapter 214: The Proposal (2)
As night fell, the lakeside garden was transformed into an enchanting, intimate setting. The strings of lanterns hanging between the cherry trees had been lit, shedding a warm, golden glow over the landscape. Their reflection danced romantically across the surface of the still, tranquil lake. The full moon shone brightly in the clear night sky, adding its own magical light. Inside the small open-air pavilion, a table for two was bathed in the flicker of candlelight. Rose petals were scattered across the tablecloth, and a bucket with a bottle of champagne sat nearby, ready to be popped open and enjoyed.
Quiet music floated through the air, though its source was unseen, hidden discretely among the trees and floral arrangements. It completed the ambiance - soft, romantic, and full of promise. The scene was straight from a fairytale, an ideal and private escape for a romantic dinner date under the stars by the lakeside. As a light breeze stirred and the cherry trees rustled their branches, it was easy to imagine falling in love in this enchanted garden on this perfect night.
Zhang Mei gazed around at the enchanting lakeside scene, rendered speechless by its beauty. The lanterns cast a warm, romantic glow, their lights reflecting softly on the serene water. She turned to Li Chen, her eyes shining. "Li Chen...you..." she started, at a loss for words.
Li Chen smiled gently, hope rising in his chest. "Do you like it?" he asked.
"I love it," Zhang Mei breathed. "It’s beautiful."
Reaching out, Li Chen took her hand softly in his, thrilled by the awe and wonder on her face. "Come, let’s sit down," he said. Zhang Mei followed wordlessly, her heart suddenly pounding as Li Chen led her to the candlelit table. She had not expected such an intimate, romantic gesture from him tonight. As they sat gazing at each other amidst the fluttering lights, she found herself hoping desperately that he cared for her as more than a friend. The beauty of her surroundings faded into the background as she lost herself in Li Chen’s eyes, thinking now only of the connection blossoming between them on this magical night.
Zhang Mei looked around in wonder as a server appeared and presented them with menus. "When did you plan all this?" she asked Li Chen curiously.
He smiled, a little shyly. "I had some help," he admitted.
Zhang Mei grinned teasingly. "I never took you as the romantic type."
"I’m glad you love it," Li Chen said sincerely, thrilled to see her so happy.
They ordered their meals and soon were chatting comfortably as they ate, the conversation flowing easily as it always did between them. But underneath the casual discussion, Li Chen’s mind was focused intently on the ring box hidden in his pocket. He couldn’t stop fidgeting with it, running his fingers over the velvet surface. His heart pounded with nervous excitement about what he planned to say next, wondering anxiously how she might respond.
He smiled and laughed along with Zhang Mei’s stories, all the while trying to gather his courage. This night had been about showing her a glimpse of his romantic side, a prelude for the question he wanted to ask once they finished their delicious meal. The secret question he hoped would change their lives forever. Li Chen took a deep breath, calming the butterflies in his stomach as he steeled himself for the perfect moment.
Zhang Mei found herself getting lost in Li Chen’s eyes as they ate and chatted. There was a new softness to his usually serious gaze and an openness that drew her in. His smile came easier tonight too, lighting up his handsome features and making her heart skip.
She watched the elegant way he moved, admiring how his gracious gestures looked almost artistic in the soft glow of the lanterns. When he reached out to refill her glass, she felt a thrill at the gentle brush of his fingers against hers. The conversation flowed easily between bites of the delicious food, but Zhang Mei was only half listening as she studied the details of Li Chen’s face - the way his dark hair curled just slightly at the nape of his neck, the tiny quirk of his lips when he was amused.
She blushed slightly, hoping he didn’t notice her stolen glances. But he seemed preoccupied too in between responses, playing with something in his pocket, a secret hint of nerves behind his smiles. Zhang Mei wondered at this new vulnerable side he was revealing to her tonight. It made her pulse quicken with a fragile hope.
When Li Chen met her eyes again, she felt herself falling into their depths, mesmerized by the promise she saw there. The rest of the garden faded away and all she could see was him - his gentle spirit shining before her and the future she envisioned being by his side. She felt cherished in a whole new way and her heart overflowed.
As they finished their meal, the music drifting from unseen speakers shifted into a slow, romantic melody. Li Chen stood and extended his hand, a slight tremor of nerves visible. "May I have this dance?" he asked Zhang Mei hopefully.
She smiled in delight, placing her hand in his. He led her to an open space where the lantern light flickered over the grass, turning slowly to face her. Zhang Mei stepped into his arms, one hand moving to rest gently on his shoulder while his palm found the small of her back. They began to sway, the music wrapping around them, cocooning them in their own private world.
Zhang Mei was lost in the feeling of being close to him, the subtle scent of his skin mingling with the perfume of nearby flowers. Neither seemed to feel the chill of winter in the air as they moved as one. The lanterns blurred into streaks of golden light as Li Chen guided her gracefully around their makeshift dancefloor. She caught his gaze and the connection between them was electric, a wordless conversation speaking of possibility and longing.
His hand shifted subtly, drawing her nearer until their bodies were almost touching. The heat of him so close made Zhang Mei catch her breath, their joined hands pressed tenderly against his heart. For Li Chen, holding her this way awoke a fierce protectiveness and a realization that she was everything he would ever need. The music swelled around them as they slowed to a halt, the rest of the world forgotten.
Zhang Mei’s breath caught in her throat as the music faded and Li Chen suddenly stepped back, reaching into his pocket. She watched in astonishment as he pulled out a small box and sank gracefully down to one knee before her.
"Li Chen, what...?" she started, completely stunned.
He looked up at her with vulnerable, hopeful eyes. "Zhang Mei," he began earnestly, "I know you and I have only been friends for a few weeks. But from the moment we met, I’ve been falling more in love with you every day."
Zhang Mei pressed a hand to her racing heart, barely able to believe this was real. She had dreamed he might feel the same, but had not dared to imagine such a sweeping confession.
Li Chen gave a self-deprecating chuckle. "I know I skipped a few steps - we were friends, not yet boyfriend and girlfriend." His eyes grew soft and serious. "But I don’t want steps...I want a future with you. I want to have children with you. I want to grow old together, retiring and watching sunsets with our grandkids."
Tears of joy slipped down Zhang Mei’s face. Li Chen took a shaky breath. "Zhang Mei, will you do me the extraordinary honor of becoming my wife? Will you make me the happiest, luckiest man in the world by marrying me?"
Her hand flew to cover her mouth as emotion overwhelmed her. She had never imagined this magical night would lead to such an unbelievable proposal. With tears glittering in her eyes, she gazed at the man kneeling before her and knew in her heart he was her soulmate.
