Chapter 165: Unknown Call

Agent 17’s emotions were a tempest, a storm raging within the confines of his being. The revelation of having a twin brother, a counterpart who shared his genetic makeup yet lived a vastly different life, stirred a whirlwind of conflicting feelings.

Confusion, a relentless companion, dominated his thoughts. How could it be that two siblings, born from the same origin, could be shaped by such disparate circumstances? The dissonance between their lives, upbringing, and allegiances perplexed him, like a puzzle with missing pieces that refused to align.

Anguish clawed at the edges of his consciousness, the weight of unanswered questions bearing down on him. The realization that his existence was entangled with secrets and hidden truths left him emotionally raw. The very essence of his identity seemed to unravel, unveiling a tapestry of complexities that he had never fathomed.

Regret cast its long shadow over his contemplations. The moments lost, the shared experiences that could have been, and the camaraderie that might have existed between brothers haunted his reflections. The anguish stemmed not just from the discovery but from the recognition of the irretrievable time that slipped away, forever altering the course of their lives.

Beneath the veneer of his stoic exterior, a tempest of anger raged. Anger at the architects of this clandestine existence, anger at the circumstances that kept them apart, and perhaps, a flicker of anger directed inward for not having unraveled the truth sooner.

In the labyrinth of his emotions, there was also a thread of yearning. A yearning for connection, understanding, and reconciliation. The prospect of confronting his twin brother, Li Chen, loomed ahead like an uncharted territory, and the emotions that accompanied that journey were as tumultuous as the storm within.

Agent 17’s room became a microcosm of his internal struggle, each pacing step reflecting the restless quest for answers. The walls, though silent witnesses, echoed with the cacophony of emotions that reverberated within him. In this turbulent sea of feelings, Agent 17 navigated the waves of uncertainty, grappling with a reality that demanded acceptance and understanding.

Agent 17’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions as he processed the shocking revelations about his family. The news of his twin brother and the near-tragedy he had narrowly averted haunted him. His cellphone interrupted his thoughts, ringing insistently. He answered with a curt "Yes."

The voice on the other end spoke with authority, "Agent 17, you need to return. We’ve dispatched Agent 19 to complete the mission." Agent 17 remained silent, absorbing the news. After a brief pause, the voice continued, "17, are you still there?"

"Yes, I am," Agent 17 replied, teeth clenched. The voice continued, "You’ve failed to complete the mission, and this is going on your record."

"Understood," Agent 17 said tersely.

"You have three days to wrap things up and fly back," the voice instructed.

"Okay," Agent 17 replied before hanging up.

Agent 17 paced back and forth in the room, the gravity of the situation sinking in. The impending arrival of Agent 19 meant that the organization was taking the mission seriously, and he was well aware of the ruthlessness that defined Agent 19. Knowing that the new agent wouldn’t back down until the mission was completed, Agent 17 felt an even greater urgency to protect his family.

Determined to uncover the truth about his past, Agent 17 decided it was time to seek answers. With thoughts of his family’s safety at the forefront of his mind, Agent 17 contemplated the decision to approach them before the arrival of Agent 19.

As he continued to pace, a whirlwind of questions and doubts clouded his thoughts. How was he raised to be a ruthless killer? Why had his mother never intervened in his upbringing? The need for answers gnawed at him, but at the same time, he hesitated. The world of covert operations was filled with secrets, and he grappled with the uncertainty of what he might uncover.

Agent 17’s internal struggle continued, the weight of the decisions ahead pressing down on him. With Agent 19 closing in, he knew he had to make a choice soon — to confront the shadows of his past or to plunge into the imminent mission with unresolved questions lingering in the background. The room remained silent, a reflection of the turmoil within Agent 17 as he prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.

After taking a long, deep breath, Agent 17 opened his laptop and began searching for Li Chen’s contact information. He meticulously combed through the company registration details until he found a number associated with Li Chen. Contemplating his decision for a few minutes, he finally mustered the resolve to make the call.

Meanwhile, Li Chen was in the living room with Sun Lixia, Tang Ziyi, and Zhang Mei, engaged in conversation and laughter. Zhang Mei, recovering from the recent incident, looked surprisingly better than Li Chen had expected. Their camaraderie was interrupted when Li Chen’s phone rang. He answered with a simple "hello."

On the other end, Agent 17 hesitated, unsure of how to start the conversation. Li Chen, puzzled by the silence, repeated, "Hello, is anyone there?" Sun Lixia, sensing something unusual, gestured for Li Chen to put the call on speaker.

Li Chen complied and asked again, "Hello, is anyone there?" A mysterious voice responded, "We need to meet, you, me, and..." Agent 17 hesitated, unable to utter the words directly. Finally, he settled on, "your mother."

Li Chen’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion and said aloud, "And who might you be?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

The voice on the other end remained cryptic, "Just meet me tonight. I will come to your place at 8 PM." With that, Agent 17 abruptly hung up, leaving Li Chen and the others in the living room puzzled by the mysterious caller and the enigmatic message.

Sun Lixia, her curiosity piqued, asked, "Who was that?" Li Chen, still perplexed by the mysterious call, responded, "I don’t know. The number is not registered."

Sun Lixia, not one to be easily deterred, nodded thoughtfully. She picked up her phone and dialed Ren Zirui, a trusted contact within their covert network. "Get everyone on standby tonight," she instructed with a sense of urgency. After a brief exchange, she hung up, her expression unreadable.

Zhang Mei, sensing tension in the air, voiced her concern, "Is everything okay?" Li Chen, offering a reassuring smile, replied, "Of course, don’t worry." Tang Ziyi and Zhang Mei exchanged subtle glances, a silent acknowledgment that they were treading into the territory of Li Chen’s closely guarded secrets.

Unspoken boundaries hung in the air, and both Tang Ziyi and Zhang Mei were acutely aware that prying into Li Chen’s family affairs was a delicate matter. There were layers of complexity and unspoken truths that they dared not unravel, respecting the boundaries of privacy that shielded the enigmatic world surrounding Li Chen and his family.

As the evening approached, an unspoken tension settled in the room, accompanied by a sense of anticipation for the upcoming meeting. The mysteries within Li Chen’s family seemed poised to surface, and the enigmatic caller had set in motion a chain of events that would either shatter the status quo or reveal the hidden truths binding their fates together.
