Chapter 8: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

"Hey you jerk!" A voice called out in anger while striding towards him, turning around he could see the girl he had touched earlier before going unconscious marching towards him with anger.

"Hey you jerk!"

’She remembers what happened?’ Draxus wondered, his heart beating rapidly, confused about what to do or the next action to take.

’Should I run? Or wait, I might not even be the target right now.’

She marched towards him then stopped a few feet away, her face filled with anger, anxiety and a hint of fear.

"Jake why are you ignoring me?"

’Okay what’s going on here? Did this body dump her or something? Hehe, she looks so pretty, I could play the good guy and comfort her.’ he thought with a shrewd smile then took a step forward to comfort her when another voice came beside him.

"Wendy, I didn’t besides this isn’t the right place to talk about that." A guy with blonde hair and little freckles on his face walked out and pulled her away from the crowd which had slowly gathered, leaving behind Draxus who still had a foot stretched out.

’mhmm, yeah that wasn’t for me, yup and she definitely doesn’t remember anything about what happened why am I so anxious!’

Walking down the stairs he got out of the building and made his way towards the football pitch where most of the crowd had gathered earlier.

’The quest is to survive so that means I just have to survive for five days and I’ll be safe, just survive.’

{There will also be a final mission assessment after the simulation is over to collate all your performance ratings and judge the final grade, additional rewards will be assigned based on the final grade achieved}

{Note: The rewards given during the system version upgrades are assigned by the lord of the Kastiya race and not the system, the qualities and their values exceed your very own imagination}

Draxus paused in his steps and glanced upwards with a sigh ’I can feel it, another trap but I’ll still fall for it, I doubt I would be able to sleep peacefully knowing I’ll miss out on such a valuable opportunity, besides if I lose I’ll just restart it till I can get it right what could possibly go wrong?’

"Yep, what could possibly go wrong?"

At the football pitch he walked towards the stands then stood, watching the field with a curious look on his face.

"They were gathered here the most earlier, could there be something hidden here related to it?"

{No} the system interjected.

"And how do you know that?"

{I’ve scanned the school and it’s structures, even underground and there’s nothing related to it here so your focus shouldn’t be placed here}

"You didn’t say you have that function tch, unreliable as always, there’s nothing for me to see here then, time to leave." He muttered then turned round to leave when the system gave another warning.

{Ding! Foreign anomaly detected, initiating protective protocol, host should please withdraw from the range of effect}

"Didn’t you say there’s nothing nearby causing this?"

{Rephrase please, I said there’s nothing within my range of detection causing this}

"So what on Earth do you expect me to do?!"

{Rephrase, we are not on Earth}

"Fuck you!"

{Sexual abuse cannot be inflicted on the system, I am virtual and cannot be fucked}

"Bas--" Draxus was about to utter out another curse in frustration when his eyes suddenly grew dull and absent, his mind and body slipping out of his own control as he felt a strange force pass through his body.

’Shit, I forgot the warning!’

{Ding! Foreign anomaly detected, initiating protective protocol to shield the host’s mind from external influence}

{Ding! Protective method detected, temporarily rebooting the host’s brain}

’Reboot my brain? You son of a bi-- arrrhhh!!’

{Please rephrase, I don’t have a mother and my creators aren’t bitches, that sounds more like you}

In the high school, Jake pulled Wendy from the hallway to the rooftop, away from the others to avoid unnecessary attention.

"Wendy you didn’t have to do that, why cause such a commotion over it?"

"Why won’t I? Tell me Jake, why won’t I?? You refused to pick my calls ever since three days ago, you cut all contacts and you have been dodging me since, why are you doing this Jake I already gave everything to you what else do you want?!"

"Listen to me Wendy, calm down I’m not avoiding you."

"Then what? What are you doing if it’s not that?"

"I--"

"I’m scared Jake, I’ve been having these dreams, memories that don’t seem to be mine, words whispering into my head, I think I’m suffering from insomnia or something’s terribly wrong, I don’t get myself anymore Jake."

"And when I need you the most you decide to do this, what did I deserve to get this Jake? Tell me!" Wendy said, crouching on the ground amidst sobs.

"What did you just say?" Jake replied in such a cold voice it made Wendy shiver slightly, the voice looked nothing like the warm one trying to console her earlier, it felt detached and a bone chilling.

"What did you say just now? Voices? Dreams?" Jake repeated.

"Yes, they started a few days ago and it got even worse this afterno--" Wendy gaggled and struggled as Jake grabbed her neck with both hands and squeezed them tightly till her eyes roller back and lost all signs of life.

"There must have been a glitch somewhere, that wasn’t supposed to happen, not yet." Jake muttered then walked towards the edge of the roof, staring at the school and the structures spread around.

"Something is interfering with my control, I can feel it!"
