Chapter 10: The Dead City: Awakening The First Racial Talent

"Are we not there yet?!" Draxus screamed out while running towards the high school’s gate, behind him were thousands of humans with crazed and frenzied looks on their faces, running and crashing into each other without regards for their own lives.

"This gives me more chills than a zombie apocalypse!"

{Have you ever witnessed a zombie apocalypse?}

"No! Why would I witness such? I’m a law abiding citizen of Earth and Earth has no zombie or creepy crawlies."

{Then how are you so sure this is worse than a zombie apocalypse?}

"Just shut the fuck up will you? I don’t even know how to escape from this mess right now."

{Just leave through the gate, whatever is influencing them cannot escape through this high school it seems, they would most likely retreat once you’re out of it’s influence zone}

’Better? Yea, that should be better, I should just keep running, my body feels so light I could do this all day, why do I keep getting different ideas and perspectives recently? It all feels so weird.’

{Like I said, the host body you are occupying influences your abilities, actions and capabilities to an extent, even your thought processes. Your brain is currently functioning differently, well I doubt there would be any difference anyways...}

’Yea yeah, I heard you. We’ll see if your words are right after I’m out of the school grounds.’ Draxus replied then dashed out of the school gate, the crowd following behind were still meters behind while he had already rushed out of the gate, his newfound speed contributed a lot to his escape from the chase but the fear in his heart had yet to dissipate.

Exiting from the gate he ran towards a bus parked beside the street and jumped into it to watch the students actions, or if there would be any help coming nearby.

A scene of thousands running all at once, creating a massive stampede would definitely alert the city.

"Wait, how are there thousands in a small high school like this? The population isn’t quite right, also why isn’t there anyone concerned or alerted about this?" Trapped in the abyss of his thoughts, he watched as the crowd approached the gate then stopped a few meters away from it, they stood there with the same blank eyes, no signs of emotions or concern then turned around and returned to the buildings of the high school.

"Okay that definitely isn’t normal, everything here isn’t normal!"

{Are you just realizing that? It’s obviously a matrix, they’re trapped in a loop of their own. Constantly repeating the same actions, forgetting their memories when it comes to it then repeat it all over again}

{Unless whatever is controlling them decides to set them free they are basically trapped in there}

"What could it be?"

{No idea}

"You really have no idea even though you created this simulation?"

{Wrong point, as I said. This wasn’t created by me or coordinated by me, you were sent here to awaken your power meaning there’s a reason for the quest which I don’t know and it’s fully up to us both to fulfill it so you had better start being more useful}

"Yeah sure, scan this city first. Something feels weird about it, no it’s definitely weird. I don’t want to get stuck in another matrix like that one please." Draxus said then jumped down from the bus then ran across the streets, with his current speed he was faster than even a bicycle pedalled at full speed and he couldn’t drive so he just ignored the cars parked beside the streets.

’Are you not done yet?’ he thought then stopped beside another car, unlike those before there was a man in it who had been dead for a while, his body was already reeking and decomposing on it’s own but no one had come over to pull him out.

"Yeah, that’s very bad."

{I think I might have found something}

"Before that, show me the quest first."

{First startup}

{Simulation: Dawn Of An Era}

{Main Quest}

{Survive for five days}

"Dawn of an era? That sounds great but not so great, era changes never start well."

{Yea, you would want to see this}

"What is that?" Draxus asked, his heart palpitating rapidly as he glanced around at the deserted streets in fear.

{Look up, it’s here already} the system said, prompting Draxus to raise his head and glance at the building beside him over fourty meters tall, at the top of it was a pair of azure green eyes staring at him filled with curiosity.

’Clarification, that isn’t human right?’

{Does it look like one?}

’I thought this place looked like Earth, fuck it all it’s nothing like Earth. I miss home!’ Draxus screamed internally then dashed away, his speed even faster than when he was chased in the high school.

A feeling deep inside his heart was screaming at him to flee as far as possible, those eyes gave him such great sense of danger he couldn’t find a way to overcome it.

The green eyes on the building suddenly shifted, trailing after Draxus then a pair of paws grabbed onto the edge of the building and leaped into the air, it caught up to Draxus within just a few seconds after leaping over a few buildings then grabbed onto his right arm and yanked it away from his body with a swing of it’s claws.

Draxus screamed out in pain and turned around to check whatever was lurking behind him only for him to see nothing but a black shadow darting round him for another swing of it’s claws.

{I guess I’ll have to restart the simulation then. Tsk, so annoying} the system’s mechanical voice said in what seemed to be a grumble.

’It hurts, my arm hurts, it hurts so much my mind is about to get turned into mush!’ Draxus screamed in his mind, his eyes turned into a deep shade of blue with crackles of lightning all over it as a blue light spread out with him at the center, wrecking havoc on all the structures close to him including the black shadow which had tore his arm apart.

After nearly a minute his eyes gradually returned to their original state but he was too drained to utter even a single word, apart from the constant pangs he still felt from the wound on his arm, the influx was too much for him as he passed out in a disoriented state, his eyes rolling over on itself.
