Chapter 371: Chapter 282: Making a Run for It (Part 2)

Two planes, marked with the letters ABI, were speeding toward Noiksoth Village.

But none of this had anything to do with Feng Shan anymore.

He was sitting in a warm wooden cabin, drinking strong liquor, eating tender roasted reindeer meat, and listening to the Ijiku Village Chief recount the past glories of the Noiksoot Tribe.

RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE!!

The roaring of propellers suddenly appeared over the village without warning, the immense sound casting a tense shadow over the small village that had just begun to feel a sense of warmth.

Startled by the noise, the Ijiku Village Chief quickly put down his cup, ready to get up and check on the situation, but Feng Shan pulled him back the next moment.

"Chief, it’s best you don’t go out. We can’t handle what’s coming next." Feng Shan’s expression was grave, and his words carried a hidden meaning.

"Is it serious?" The Ijiku Village Chief was taken aback by Feng Shan’s words. He slowly sat back down, his expression turning cautious.

"It has nothing to do with us. Or maybe it does." Feng Shan gave an ambiguous reply and said no more, as if unwilling to discuss the topic further. He then turned his gaze to the door, seemingly waiting for something.

A short while later, a knock came from outside the cabin door.

As if spurred by the knock, the Ijiku Village Chief shot to his feet and, without a second thought, hurried to pull the door open.

From the moment Feng Shan had set foot in the village, everything had spun out of control. This was especially true for the oil company’s outpost, where the situation was still a complete mystery.

When the door opened, two investigators in ABI vests and cold-weather face masks stood ramrod straight at the entrance. They exuded a serious and professional air. The face masks obscured most of their faces, making it impossible to see their features clearly.

’ABI?’

The Ijiku Village Chief frowned, a look of complete confusion on his face.

’The Alaska Investigation Bureau... what are they doing here?’

Normally, the Alaska Investigation Bureau only mobilized for major criminal investigations in the State of Alaska.

"Hello, is Sheriff Feng here?" one of the ABI investigators asked politely, simultaneously removing his mask to reveal a Caucasian face with a very serious expression.

"Feng, it’s for you," the Ijiku Village Chief called back into the house. He then turned to the two investigators and, out of hospitable instinct, asked politely, "Would you like to come in for a drink to warm up?"

"Thank you, but no." The man politely refused the chief’s kind offer. While his tone was mild, his non-negotiable attitude was also clear.

Just then, Feng Shan and Nash walked out of the cabin. Looking at the two investigators before him, he asked directly, "What can I do for you?"

The white ABI investigator stepped forward and shook Feng Shan’s hand, his expression serious.

"The ABI is taking over this case now. We hope you will abide by the regulations and maintain confidentiality regarding today’s events, Sheriff. Of course, we will also provide you with some compensation."

Feng Shan just shrugged, looking indifferent.

"No problem. But I really hate that criminal, Mick. He hurt poor Lina."

The other investigator, who hadn’t spoken until now, suddenly said, "God will watch over him. I hope the prison has enough soap stored up for him. We’ll arrange for him to have a wedding every day."

Upon hearing this reply, Feng Shan broke into a satisfied smile.

The originally tense atmosphere instantly eased, and the mood between them became much more amicable.

At that moment, the white investigator pointed toward the oil company’s outpost.

He frowned slightly as he spoke, his words carrying a hint of teasing.

"Since we’ve reached a pleasant agreement, can you withdraw your men, Sheriff? Those guys are waiting for your orders. My God, you’re incredibly generous with your subordinates—you’ve equipped them with full tactical gear that’s even better than what we use."

"It’s just average. I’m planning to upgrade them to a full set of Talan tactical gear," Feng Shan grinned, putting on the air of a nouveau riche flush with cash.

’Fair enough!’

This owner of the Crown Territory was indeed a bona fide nouveau riche.

The two ABI investigators rolled their eyes, feeling there was no need or reason to stay any longer.

’We do this for the ideal of justice, and all he does is blatantly show off.’

"Sheriff, I suggest you leave soon. If you’re not afraid of trouble, that is. Other departments will be arriving shortly."

Then, the white investigator looked at Feng Shan with a meaningful expression, offering a kind reminder.

The longer this dragged on, the more departments would likely get involved, and the situation would become even more complicated. If Feng Shan didn’t want to get mixed up in it, it was better to pull out early.

Feng Shan’s heart sank when he heard this.

He had been hiding out in the village precisely to avoid this kind of trouble.

He didn’t dare delay and immediately took out his phone to call Yves.

He told him to hand over the oil workers to the ABI immediately, then lead his men away from the oil company’s outpost and have everyone gather at the airfield.

...

「A short time later.」

A P-740 flew into the dark sky and disappeared into the night.

By the time they returned to the Crown Territory, it was late at night.

The entire Crown Territory was enveloped in tranquility, with only a few scattered lights still shining like distant stars in the dark night.

Once everyone had returned to the camp, Feng Shan, his expression grave, issued a gag order. Considering the incident’s wide-ranging implications, he instructed everyone not to disclose any related information before the case was officially announced.

After all, if word of this got out, it could trigger a chain reaction of unexpected consequences and could even have a significant impact on the Crown Territory.

After he gave his instructions, everyone went their separate ways.

Feng Shan first returned his gear to the armory. Once everything was properly stowed, he headed straight for the tavern without delay.

As soon as he walked in, he saw Jeff, who had been waiting for a long time, sitting in a corner.

"Feng." Jeff stood up to greet him.

The two hugged, then sat down.

Feng Shan nodded and stretched comfortably in his chair.

It was the off-season for tourism, and the tavern was quiet. The usual bustling scene was gone, leaving them as the only two customers.

"Boss, what can I get you to drink?" a waiter asked, approaching with a menu.

But Feng Shan wasn’t in a hurry to order a drink. Instead, he turned to look toward the restaurant. "Is Jenny here?"

The waiter nodded. "Yes, she’s learning how to cook from Sifu."

"Go to the restaurant and order a meal for me. And get me a beer while you’re at it." After giving his order, Feng Shan turned to Jeff. "Do you want one?"

"I’ve already eaten. Jenny’s fried rice is really good, you should try it," Jeff said, shaking his head.

After the waiter left, the table fell silent.

Jeff then leaned a little closer to Feng Shan and said in a low, worried voice, "Buddy, the Chief just called me. He said this thing is going to blow up big and might even affect some of the largest oil companies in Alaska. You’re not in too deep, are you?"

Feng Shan first shook his head, then asked in return, "No. I was investigating a violent crime according to standard procedure. Between Finnex Operating, LLC, and the Wild Bull Tribe..."

He paused there.

He didn’t continue, just frowned slightly.

The meaning was obvious.

Any smart person could understand the stakes involved.

Jeff understood Feng Shan’s meaning at once. He quickly waved his hands and hurried to explain.

"There’s no relationship at all. It’s just company-to-company business dealings, mainly in oil pipeline system maintenance. They’re at the South Milovich Oil Field; we’re on the North Slope."

"By the way, the gift the Chief asked me to bring is in the hangar. When can you perform the blessing?"

"Let’s do it tomorrow. I’m a bit tired today. After dinner, let’s go soak in the hot springs together." Feng Shan said, stretching again, his face etched with exhaustion.

After everything that had happened that day, he truly felt mentally and physically drained.

Just as he was speaking, Feng Shan saw Jenny walk into the tavern carrying an insulated food container. Her figure looked especially warm under the tavern’s dim lighting, inexplicably warming his heart.

"Did the investigation go smoothly?" Jenny came to Feng Shan’s table. Her tone was relaxed, even a little happy.

"Smooth enough. What delicious thing did you make?"

Feng Shan’s nose twitched as he caught the faint aroma of beef wafting from the container. It tickled his nostrils, instantly stirring his appetite and making him feel even hungrier.

"Sifu’s beef noodles. I just learned how to make them."

Jenny wore a warm smile, like the winter sun—radiant and comforting, making one feel exceptionally at ease.
