Chapter 157: Chapter 136: Where Did This Tank Come From?
This time, facing the more formidable Lizardmen, Henry and the other two commanders placed their most elite Warriors in the front rank.
The archers quickly fell back, and the infantry immediately formed ranks and advanced, appearing atop the sand dune.
Henry stood on the dune, gripping his great axe tightly, ready for the coming charge.
"Javelins, ready!" Henry commanded loudly.
The infantrymen quickly pulled Javelins from the packs on their backs. These thrown weapons could deliver immense penetrating power at close range.
"Throw!" Henry’s voice rang out again.
At his command, hundreds of Javelins streaked like lightning through the desert’s heat haze, flying straight into the Lizardmen’s formation.
The Javelins carved graceful arcs through the air before plunging viciously into the Lizardmen’s chests.
Although the Lizardmen’s skin was as tough as iron, many were still pierced by the dense volley, and green blood gushed out.
Many of the Lizardmen who had already been hit by several arrows were struck by the Javelins and fell, never to rise again. This brought a sigh of relief from Henry.
’If they didn’t die from that, they’d be impossibly tough.’
However, some of the Lizardmen were extraordinarily resilient. Even after being impaled by Javelins, they were still able to fight on.
As the infantry threw their weapons, the Lizardmen simultaneously retaliated with their own. Their javelins and short spears whistled through the air with great force and speed, posing a huge threat to Henry’s infantry.
"Shield wall!"
The infantrymen quickly raised their shields, forming a solid defensive line. The Lizardmen’s thrown weapons slammed against the shields with dull thuds, and some soldiers even had their shields knocked from their grasp.
’These Lizardmen are astonishingly strong. To throw with such force from a low position to a high one... No wonder it takes four Legions permanently stationed here just for passive defense.’
As the Lizardmen charged, a sense of oppression fell over the infantry. Although the tight shield wall offered some protection, the Lizardmen’s incredible strength and size advantage made the soldiers’ defense look less than sturdy.
"Hold the line!" Henry roared, his voice echoing across the battlefield as he tried to steady his soldiers’ nerves.
Ten meters, five meters...
The Lizardmen crashed into the infantry’s position. The soldiers could even smell the stench of swamp on them.
’Huh? Are there swamps in the desert?’
The Lizardmen and Senior Infantry clashed hand-to-hand. The Lizardmen swung their Obsidian Weapons, each blow whistling through the air with immense power.
The infantry relied on their shields, swords, and spears, trying to withstand the Lizardmen’s ferocious assault.
Under the Lizardmen’s heavy blows, some of the infantry’s shields were smashed out of shape, and some soldiers were sent flying, landing hard on the sand.
But most of the soldiers held their formation under the pressure, supporting each other and counter-attacking with spears and swords.
"Swords can’t cut their scales! Switch to Nail Hammers!"
"Spearmen, thrust!"
The spearmen among the infantry responded quickly, aiming their spearpoints at the Lizardmen’s abdomens and legs. These areas were relatively weak, with fewer scales.
Spears drove into the Lizardmen. Impaled by several lances, the creatures let out pained hisses as copious amounts of green blood flowed, their strength gradually draining away.
Although the soldiers had superior numbers, the Lizardmen’s counterattacks were just as fierce. Their Obsidian Weapons looked crude, but driven by their immense strength, every swing could inflict a fatal wound.
Some infantrymen were struck, their armor torn apart like paper as blood spattered.
’The sharpness of this Obsidian is actually on par with the Empire’s high-quality steel blades, maybe even better. It’s inconceivable.’
"Skilled Infantry, advance and support!"
Seeing the infantry line wavering, Henry immediately ordered the reserve Skilled Infantry to join the battle.
Several squads of Skilled Infantry emerged from the flanks of the Senior Infantry, slashing with their Heavy Swords, attempting to encircle the Lizardman force.
Flashes of sword light left gashes on the Lizardmen’s bodies. The addition of the Skilled Infantry stabilized the line.
The battle grew more intense, and the fight on the dune had devolved into a chaotic melee.
Lizardmen and infantrymen were tangled together, where every swing and every thrust could mean life or death.
"Cavalry, prepare!"
Boman and Fass immediately waved their noble banners, sending a signal to the Cavalry on both flanks of the dune.
The Grassland Warriors and riders had been waiting on the flanks for some time, their horses eager to charge.
Hearing Henry’s order, they immediately readied their weapons and charged toward the Lizardmen like a gale.
"Cavalry, charge!" Bain and the others commanded, raising their iron Riding Spears from atop their warhorses.
The Cavalry, led by the Attendants of Henry, Boman, and Fass, burst from both sides of the dune like a pair of tornadoes, their hooves kicking up clouds of sand.
The Cavalry’s Riding Spears and lances glinted with cold light. Their targets were the Lizardmen’s backsides and flanks.
The infantry and Lizardmen were locked in a fierce melee on the dune when suddenly, the Lizardmen at the rear heard the sound of horses.
A dark mass of grassland riders and Warriors charged at them. Though powerful, the Lizardmen’s formation began to break under the high-speed impact of the Cavalry.
The grassland riders’ Riding Spears left deep wounds on the Lizardmen, their green blood moistening the desert sand.
A large number of Grassland Warriors followed close behind, their battle-blades slitting the Lizardmen’s throats or cleaving their skulls.
The impact of the horses knocked the Lizardmen to the ground, where they were trampled by the throng of Cavalry.
"Gar! Xho’za’khanx!"
"Gor! Zec!" the Lizardmen shrieked, responding to their chieftain’s commands.
One Lizardman chieftain crouched slightly before leaping, yanking a cavalryman straight from his horse. The counterattacks from some of the Lizardmen began to inflict casualties on the Cavalry.
But in truth, with the Cavalry’s entry, the tide of battle began to turn in favor of Henry’s army. Boman and Fass led other soldiers to reinforce the line, swapping out the wounded to maintain the fighting strength of the main front.
The Lizardmen were ferocious, but their advantages were gradually eroded by the human army’s coordinated tactics and superior numbers.
Although the situation on the battlefield was favorable to Henry’s army, the presence of the Lizardman chieftains remained a huge threat.
Amidst the chaotic battle, several Lizardman chieftains gathered together. Protected by other Lizardmen, they forcibly broke through the infantry line and charged straight for Henry.
Henry could clearly feel the fury these three Lizardman chieftains held for him, an emotion that confused him.
He didn’t understand why these Lizardmen harbored such intense hostility toward him, but there was no time on the battlefield to ponder it.
"Henry! Watch out!"
Boman and Fass noticed the chieftains’ movements. They tried to rush over to help, but they were tied down by Lizardman Warriors and couldn’t break free.
Henry tightened his grip on his great axe. The Lizardman chieftains brandished their Obsidian Weapons and let out deafening roars. Their strength and speed far surpassed that of an ordinary Lizardman Warrior.
Henry swung his great axe, and it clashed against the chieftains’ Obsidian Weapons, producing the sharp clang of metal on metal.
’These weapons made of Obsidian—I can’t tell if they’re blades or swords—weren’t shattered by my great axe?!’
Instead, Henry’s armor was being scored with white marks under the chieftains’ attacks.
’Hm?’ Henry stared at the weapons in the Lizardmen’s hands, a knot of tension forming in his chest.
Henry increased the frequency of his attacks, but the Lizardman chieftains always seemed to deftly evade his blows.
’Their tails... they seem to give them greater agility and balance.’
During one furious exchange, Henry finally landed a hit on a Lizardman chieftain.
His great axe shattered the chieftain’s shield and severed its arm, but then the axe head became lodged between the chieftain’s ribs, impossible to pull out.
This was the first time Henry had ever encountered such a situation. He was the man who had cleaved a Centaur in half at the waist!
What shocked Henry the most was that even after suffering such a grievous wound, the Lizardman chieftain still tried to counterattack.
’It’s not dead!’
Henry’s muscles tensed. He exerted all his strength and finally wrenched his great axe free from the chieftain’s ribs.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he adjusted his stance and brought the axe down hard on the chieftain’s head.
The great axe whistled through the air and struck the chieftain’s head squarely, which burst under the immense force, splattering green blood and brain matter everywhere.
However, this gruesome scene did not frighten the other two Lizardman chieftains. There was no fear in their eyes, only a more blazing battle lust.
The two Lizardman chieftains let out sky-shaking roars and fearlessly launched a ferocious attack on Henry.
Henry fell back instinctively, swinging his great axe defensively.
Their nimble movements and rich combat experience allowed them to continuously leave white marks on Henry’s armor. However, his armor was exceptionally hard, and the Lizardman chieftains were ultimately unable to penetrate it.
Finally, Henry found an opening. A feinting turn fooled one of the Lizardmen, and his great axe slammed viciously into the chieftain’s neck, nearly severing its head.
The other Lizardman chieftain was also struck down by Henry’s great axe.
Henry walked over to the downed chieftain and raised his great axe. The Lizardman chieftain looked at Henry maliciously and spoke a few unintelligible words.
"Xlanax... Kro..."
Henry frowned. He couldn’t understand a word the Lizardman was saying. He brought his axe down, ending the chieftain’s life.
With the chieftains dead, the utter defeat of the Lizardmen was only a matter of time.
The battlefield was littered with countless Lizardman corpses, but the army of Henry and his allies had also paid a heavy price.
Henry stood on the sand dune, panting heavily. He looked at the great axe in his hand, then at the distant setting sun, his heart filled with complex emotions.
This battle made him realize that there were times when even he was out of his depth. The Lizardman chieftains were too fast, their attacks too quick. They had nearly struck him in the face several times.
