Chapter 105: Chapter 91: Eliminate the Unlawful, Annihilate Evil
Reynard’s army was numerous, but it was primarily composed of Recruited Soldiers made up of villagers and some untrained men.
Calvin, on the other hand, led the elite Mercenaries provided by Baron Henry. They were well-equipped, well-trained, and had High Morale.
The battle horn sounded. With over a thousand men between the two armies, the large-scale brawl began!
On the battlefield, Calvin rode his warhorse, brandishing a greatsword as he charged bravely at the very front.
Henry’s Mercenaries followed close behind, demonstrating their strength. Like a sharp Long Sword, they sliced straight into Reynard’s army.
These Mercenaries were not only equipped with armor, sharp Long Swords, and shields, but were also highly disciplined, executing a variety of tactical maneuvers.
Under the command of their officers, they performed wedge formations, envelopments, and infiltrations, making it difficult for Reynard’s Private Army to resist.
The officers of several Senior Infantry squads were a little bewildered. ’Is this even an army? This feels more like we’re putting down bandits.’
The officers had overlooked one important thing: this wasn’t a war between Alien Races, so the intensity wasn’t high. The serfs’ and Militia members’ will to resist was weak, and the soldiers were the type who could only fight when they had the advantage.
They could surrender to humans and become prisoners or serfs, but surrendering to Half-Beastmen... the outcome was easy to imagine.
Calvin’s eyes locked onto Reynard. All he had to do was find the man on the other side with the best equipment and an armored horse—that would be their noble.
Although Reynard was also a valiant Warrior, his skill and strength were lacking compared to Calvin.
During their duel, every swing of Calvin’s sword cut through the air with a WHOOSH, while Reynard was forced to constantly retreat on the defensive.
The glint of their blades crisscrossed in the air, creating sharp CLANGS on impact. Reynard began to feel his strength failing. His breathing grew ragged, while Calvin fought with increasing vigor, his Swordsmanship becoming even more ferocious.
’If I can’t beat Henry, you think I can’t beat *you*?!’
A few stray arrows struck Reynard’s warhorse, throwing him to the ground.
Calvin dismounted and charged at the struggling Reynard. His greatsword slammed into Reynard’s blade, sending it flying.
Having lost his weapon and facing the tip of Calvin’s sword, Reynard could only choose to surrender. The fall had nearly killed him, and he simply had no strength left to fight.
Calvin looked down at Reynard and declared, "Reynard, your arrogance and insults have led to your defeat. This land and your honor now belong to me."
Reynard lowered his head. He knew he had lost everything. The rivalries from all their past competitions were now meaningless.
"When did you assemble this army?" Reynard suddenly stared at Calvin, the question baffling him completely.
He had been keeping a close eye on his neighbor. If the other man had been expanding his army and preparing for war, there was no way he would have been caught so unprepared.
Calvin just laughed heartily and offered no explanation. ’Let the old fool stew in his confusion!’
Calvin watched the well-equipped soldiers guarding the surrendered troops and nodded to himself. None of this would have been possible without the help of Henry’s elite Mercenaries.
’If only I could raise an army like this myself... No, it’s too expensive.’
’For soldiers of this caliber, Henry must have poured all his wealth into them... No, wait. Then where did he get the money to develop his fief?’
Neither Edmund nor Calvin stopped their march of annexation. This time, they planned to plunder and occupy at least three Knight-held territories. As soon as they sent ministers and clerks to the new lands, they could prepare for the next war.
The clouds of war gathered over the southeastern region of Odoche, while Henry observed it all quietly from Westwood Laine.
He didn’t care about the wars outside. As long as he received the notifications for incoming [Overlord Training Points], all was well.
Henry sat quietly in his spacious study, holding a stack of letters that arrived continuously from Daimon and Yiduo.
As he read through them one by one, an excited glint gradually appeared in his eyes.
The information revealed in the letters made him feel that the situation in the empire was developing just as he had hoped.
The letters described the power struggles between court factions within the imperial capital. The infighting among the nobility was escalating, with even signs of assassinations and coups.
’This is great news! The damn empire is finally falling into chaos.’
Daimon mentioned in his letter that order in North City had recently become precarious. The Commander of the Imperial Guard, Yiduo, also hinted at the instability within the court and the emperor’s bewilderment at the current situation.
"It seems the Lizardmen in the south have caught the emperor off guard..." Henry’s fingers tapped lightly on his desk, his mind racing.
’Based on the current information, the Lizardmen’s strange mounts are very likely... dinosaurs?’ Henry closed his eyes and brainstormed, recalling some old memories.
As for the west, information was currently limited. The Northern Lands remained stable and were even improving, with several Legions suppressing the remnants of the Kievan Rus’ duchy and the Ogres as if they were swatting children.
’But judging from the situation at court, it seems the emperor isn’t having such an easy time, is he?’
If the empire truly fell into chaos, then his own region of Westwood Laine would have the chance to gain greater autonomy. He might even be able to use the opportunity to expand his sphere of influence into the empire’s interior.
’After all, the emperor did say he could become a Directly Affiliated Marquis on the border, didn’t he?’
He stood up, walked to the window, and gazed at the distant horizon.
Rain had begun to fall on the grasslands. Well, not exactly grasslands—his territory was more of a plain with some woodlands and hills.
