Zhu Yuan scrutinized the amiable faces around him, frowning slightly. He declared grimly, "Team Leader Xuan Re and Vice Leader Ah Dai are our esteemed guests from the Red Hurricane Mercenary Group. Everyone, please do not disturb them. Disperse." Under his stern gaze, the surrounding mercenaries gradually dissipated. After all, no one wished to offend the number one mercenary group on the continent. Ah Dai and Xuan Yue managed to extricate themselves and followed Zhu Yuan into the grand hall of the Mercenary Guild Headquarters.
The headquarters hall of the Mercenary Guild was the largest hall that Ah Dai had ever seen. The nearly ten-meter-high dome was hemispherically shaped, and on the ceiling and walls around, there were all kinds of murals. The protagonists in the murals were all mercenaries, seemingly depicting the development of the mercenary world over the past millennium. In the grand hall, spanning nearly three thousand square meters, there were hundreds of mercenaries above the age of thirty. They were all top-tier in the mercenary world, who all had at least the strength of a first-level mercenary. In front of the hall’s entrance, hanging on the wall, was a large blackboard with many densely written tasks, the lowest of which were first-level tasks. The Special Class tasks were as many as a dozen, causing Ah Dai to quietly sigh. As expected of the Mercenary Guild, it was truly extraordinary! Yue Ji, Kino, and Olivia were crowded among the crowd, looking at the tasks listed on the blackboard.
Zhu Yuan halted, smiling, "The Guild has been established for nearly a thousand years. The murals on the walls around are all legendary figures in the mercenary world. Frankly speaking, I didn’t expect you guys to also be mercenaries. Can’t the development space of the Tian Gang Sword Sect and the Church satisfy your needs? With your joining, you’re really putting pressure on the old guys like us! Haha."
Ah Dai calmly responded, "You’re too kind. We joined the mercenary world only to find things more suitable for our adventures from the mercenary tasks. We don’t intend to do anything big in the mercenary world."
A gleam flashed in Zhu Yuan’s eyes as he countered, "But you already have done so. The Overlord Mercenary Group definitely ranks in the Special Class Mercenary Group category, maybe even surpassing the Moon Scar Mercenary Group. But they surrendered at your hands. I heard that one of you fought a group battle against them with your strength alone, causing them to suffer a big loss, yet there were no casualties. Who did this?"
Playing with her mercenary card, Xuan Yue stated, "Vice leader, it seems your information is not well-informed! Didn’t the people at the door just say it? The one who defeated the Overlord Mercenary Group was Big Brother Ah Dai. The Moon Scar Mercenary Group is our ally, so naturally we would help when they were in trouble. The Overlord Mercenary Group’s power is actually very good, it’s just that they happened to meet us. Are you guys from the Red Hurricane Mercenary Group afraid of an alliance between the Moon Scar Mercenary Group and the Overlord Mercenary Group? That doesn’t sound like your style!"
Zhu Yuan sighed, "We are not afraid of their alliance. Even if another ordinary Special Class Mercenary Group joins their ranks, they still cannot truly threaten us. What we fear is the addition of the Evil Sky Mercenary Group. Because no one in our Red Hurricane Mercenary Group can handle the strength you all possess. You all are our biggest threat!"
Xuan Yue declared, "We won’t get involved in the struggle among you mercenaries. Of course, this is predicated on you not provoking the Moon Scar Mercenary Group. Alright, enough talk, I’m off to change my mercenary card, so as not to be discriminated against in the future." After saying that, she headed towards the counter at the front. Zhu Yuan contemplated with a furrowed brow, turning to Ah Dai and asking, "Brother, which level have you cultivated the Life Creation Decree?" It was well known that the four Sword Saints were quite familiar with each other, and as the second disciple of the Eastern Sword Saint, he naturally knew the importance of each level of the Life Creation Decree to every member of Tian Gang Sword Sect.
Ah Dai blinked, he didn’t really want to answer this question, but since Zhu Yuan had just helped them out of a sticky situation, he felt obligated to return the favor. Unwilling to lie, he replied with a spiritual message, "The ninth one."
Zhu Yuan shuddered, blurting out in disbelief, "What? You’ve already reached the ninth level, the highest realm of the Life Creation Decree? So that means your strength has surpassed the second-generation practitioners?"
Ah Dai replied, "I’m not sure if I’m stronger than elder Xi Wen, but there is no highest realm in Life Creation Decree. Even if one reaches the ninth level, there is still room for continuous improvement." This was something he had come to realize when he broke through the ninth level. Both he and the Tian Gang Sword Saint reached the ninth realm, yet their strength varied considerably, proving that the cultivation of the Life Creation Decree wasn’t limited to the nine levels.
Zhu Yuan muttered to himself, his head bowing, "No wonder you’re so strong, as you’ve nearly approached the strength of a Sword Saint. I really wonder how you cultivated at such a young age."
Ah Dai exhibited a faint smile and said, "That is our faction’s secret. Deputy Commander, where is Commander Lian Dan? I haven’t seen him." Ah Dai had a good impression of Lian Dan. Since Zhu Yuan was present, it meant that Lian Dan must have returned as well. Zhu Yuan lifted his head and spoke, "Our eldest brother still has many matter to take care of. I’ve been assisting a few veterans from the Mercenary World in handling the Mercenary Guild. If you are looking to take on any mission, I could assist in finding one for you. I guarantee you’ll be satisfied with it. Considering your current capabilities, I’m afraid only special-grade missions would suit you. If you wish to visit our Red Charming Mercenary Group, I’d be even more delighted."
A thought occurred to Ah Dai as he responded, "We had indeed come looking to take on a mission. Are there any special-grade tasks tied with the Death Mountain Range?"
Zhu Yuan was shocked upon hearing these words. Of course he knew that the Evil Sky Mercenary Group and Moon Scar Mercenary Group only managed to upgrade their status to the Special Class Mercenary Group by successfully completing a mission assigned by the Death Mountain Range to find the Top-Grade Magic Crystal. "My brother, you really do hold something special for the Death Mountain Range! That place is the most perilous region on the continent. The last mission you completed was one of the toughest among the special-grade missions. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have received such a hefty reward. Unfortunately, there are no current tasks tied to the Death Mountain Range. After all, it’s considered a forbidden place on this continent. No one knows what lies within it. Even if someone were to offer a mission, no mercenary group would willing accept it. The last mission you accepted had been proposed for fifty years straight. The Death Mountain Range is indeed perilous, it would be best if you avoided going there."
Ah Dai had wholeheartedly trusted Zhu Yuan, so if Zhu Yuan confidently stated that there were none, then it was likely that no Mercenary Guild had any missions tied to the Death Mountain Range. Ah Dai let out a resigned sigh, "Thank you for your kind intentions. But, even without any missions tied with the Death Mountain Range, we might still venture there for training purposes. After all, our abilities will be more likely to improve alongside the dangers."
Zhu Yuan said, "You really are obsessed with training! It’s unfortunate that I’m growing older, and no longer have the vigor of my younger years. Otherwise, I’d have certainly joined you on an escapade in the Death Mountain Range."
Just as they were conversing, Xuan Yue abruptly walked back towards them, his face filled with urgency and surprise. "Big brother Ah Dai, quickly go take a look. There’s a bounty out looking for you!"
Ah Dai was dumbfounded. After giving Zhu Yuan a nod, Ah Dai and Xuan Yue proceeded towards the blackboard. Xuan Yue pointed to a Level 1 mission, saying, "Look brother, the first task on the Level 1 mission-list is specifically in search of you. Judging by the time listed, it seems to have been issued today." Ah Dai took a moment to examine the task. The first task under the Level 1 missions was a search task. The task was simply worded: Find Ah Dai, the deputy commander of the Evil Sky Mercenary Group, and instruct him to urgently find Yan Shi in the Pu Yan Tribe. Anyone who executes this task can accompany Ah Dai to the Pu Yan Tribe and receive the reward there. The reward was fixed at five-thousand gold coins. After examining the task description, Ah Dai was taken aback. "Big brother Yan Shi is looking for me? Could it be that the Pu Yan or something must have happened to the Pu Yan Tribe?" As this thought crossed his mind, Ah Dai grew anxious as he said to Xuan Yue, "Brother, we need to rush to the Pu Yan Tribe. Something could have happened to big brother Yan Shi."
Xuan Yue replied calmly, "Big brother, don’t get too anxious. This task was recently placed, meaning that the issuer hasn’t gone far. All we need to do is find the issuer and understand what has happened to the Pu Yan Tribe. Let’s ask the people from the Guild where the issuer could have gone to. We can then look for them."
A spark flashed across Ah Dai’s eyes as he responded, "That’s a great idea! Let me find Deputy Commander Zhu Yuan to assist us." Even though he wasn’t prone to asking for help, time was of the essence and he didn’t have time to give much thought to it. Ah Dai had profound feelings for the Pu Yan Tribe. It was a place comprised of individuals like Yan Shi and Yan Li, but it also included the Prophet Pu Lin. Ah Dai held the Prophet Pu Lin in high esteem. In his heart, Prophet Pu Lin held a status equivalent to the Sword Saint of the Tian Gang. Given that something was happening with the Pu Yan Tribe, it was natural for Ah Dai to feel anxious. With a leap forward, he landed beside Zhu Yuan who was about to climb the stairs. "Deputy Commander, I have a favor I need your assistance with."
Zhu Yuan was taken aback as he replied, "What is it? Is there a problem? Tell me all about it. As long as I’m capable of assisting, I shall do so."
Ah Dai quickly explained the task to him. Zhu Yuan was very cooperative and immediately led him to the staff members at the Mercenary Guild to assist in the search. By this time, Xuan Yue had already located Yue Ji, Kino, and Olivia, and the five of them were waiting for the staff member’s reply. The task was just recently issued, so the staff member was quickly able to find the corresponding record. The staff member began, "Ah, it’s regarding this task! I remember it, I was responsible for the registration. It was a robust man from the Pu Yan Tribe. He was rather short but had two large battle axes strapped to his back. Initially, I thought he was here as a mercenary, but then he revealed that he was here looking for someone. He appeared to be in a rush. After paying the task’s deposit, he left. He has probably returned to the Pu Yan Tribe."
A shock ran through Ah Dai. The staff member’s description was clear enough for Ah Dai to understand: the man was none other than Yan Li. It appeared that the Pu Yan Tribe had some kind of trouble and that it may involve himself. He turned around to his companions and said, "We probably can’t stay in Red Hurricane City anymore. We need to head to the Pu Yan Tribe immediately."
Xuan Yue said, "Big brother, don’t worry. We’ll leave right away. I think it would be best if just the two of us went to the Pu Yan Tribe first. Big brothers Kino, Vila and sister Yue Ji can follow behind us slowly."
Kino said, "I’m to blame for being so slow. I’m hindering the journey. You all should go ahead. I’ll catch up as soon as possible."
Olivia said, "Don’t just blame yourself, Kino. Even when Ah Dai and Xuan Re go full speed, I can’t keep up with them. We should just follow behind at our own pace."
Ah Dai was in a hurry, he could no longer consider the feelings of the people around him, "In that case, let’s leave it at this. Vice Leader Zhu Yuan, thank you for your help. Please send our regards to Leader Lian Dan. We’ll take our leave first." Having said this, he promptly disappeared through the main entrance. Xuan Yue followed hastily, activating the Holy Power within her. In a blink of an eye, their two bodies, one black and one white, disappeared.
Yue Ji looked at Kino and Olivia, remarking: "Let’s also get moving, we should try to reach the Pu Yan tribe as soon as we can so as not to let Ah Dai and the others wait too long. Should something happen, we can help out as well." Without a moment’s delay, she left the Mercenary Guild. Olivia and Kino glanced at each other before taking off as well. Zhu Yuan looked at their departing figures slackly shaking his head, murmuring: "It seems that the Tian Gang Sword Saint lineage will continue to flourish. So young, yet they’ve already reached such a strong state. It won’t be long before Ah Dai steps into the realm of a Sword Saint."
Having left the Mercenary Guild, Ah Dai and Xuan Yue immediately started flying, hovering in mid-air by relying on the abundant energy within their bodies, and sped toward the south. Due to their lightning-fast speed, passersby could only catch sight of two swift shadows flashing past. Most people would think they imagined it.
In terms of speed, Xuan Yue was still a bit inferior to Ah Dai. The Holy Light that lifted her body gradually turned to gold, and the golden energy wings appeared once again on her back. Light elements quickly began to gather around her, dramatically increasing her speed as she tried to keep up with Ah Dai. In no time, they left Red Hurricane City, and without any restraint, they dashed like shooting stars towards the Pu Yan tribe.
Ah Dai put all his mind into his Dantian. His vital energy channels had all turned golden in color, and his almost solid true Qi was continually flowing around, until he reached his maximum speed. Scenes were flashing past on both sides, and even with Ah Dai’s eyesight, he could only make out vague shadows. After an hour of running, even Ah Dai himself was unsure of how far they had dashed.
"Big brother, slow down, I can’t keep up." Xuan Yue’s voice echoed in Ah Dai’s heart. Startled, he halted his speed and floated to a spot about ten meters away, gently landing. With a flash of golden light, Xuan Yue landed next to Ah Dai, her hands on her hips, panting heavily. Ah Dai quickly walked behind Xuan Yue, pressed his palms on her back, and transferred his true Qi into her. With the aid of Ah Dai’s abundant true Qi, Xuan Yue’s breathing slowly steadied. Wiping the sweat off her forehead with her Mage Robe, she glanced at Ah Dai and complained,"Big brother, you’re trying to kill me! Who can catch up with your monstrous speed?"
Scratching his head, Ah Dai apologized, "I was too eager, I’m sorry. You seem to be wearing a lot of clothes! What is that thick layer you’re wearing? It’s hot, and you wore so much; aren’t you hot? Why not take it off?" Upon hearing Ah Dai’s words, Xuan Yue’s pale face turned completely red. The thick cloth Ah Dai was referring to was the fabric she used to wrap her bosom!
Concerned, Ah Dai said, "Ah! You’re so hot your face has turned red, why don’t you take them off? Why wear so much?"
Xuan Yue turned her face away, too embarrassed to look Ah Dai in the eyes, she muttered, "Don’t interfere, I’m not hot. I was weak when I was young and couldn’t handle being cold, so I need to wear multiple layers. Let’s continue our journey. Just don’t go as fast as before." Finishing her sentence, she activated her Divine Power, floating upwards and heading towards the Pu Yan Tribe.
Ah Dai watched Xuan Yue’s departing figure full of confusion, thinking: What’s wrong with Xuan Yue? What is she afraid of? I’ve always seen her well-dressed. Is she really that cold? Mages really do have weak constitutions. Regardless, he quickly took off after Xuan Yue.
By nightfall, Ah Dai and Xuan Yue, with their strong abilities, had successfully entered the territory of the Pu Yan tribe. With their current pace, they could reach the largest tribe of Pu Yan by noon the next day. After a day of rushing, both of them were utterly exhausted. The over-utilization of their power greatly decreased their strength. Suddenly, the sound of flowing water was heard. Xuan Yue’s eyes brightened as she said to Ah Dai, "Big brother, let us rest here tonight. I can’t go on any longer. Being near a water source, we can bathe as well."
Ah Dai nodded; he has not been exerting his full strength all this while to keep up with Xuan Yue’s speed. Adding to that, the never-ending characteristic of his unique skill, his consumption of energy was much less than Xuan Yue’s, and he hadn’t even broken a sweat. Looking at Xuan Yue’s somewhat pale face, he sympathetically said, "It seems like it’s a river. Let’s rest on the riverbank for the night and continue our journey tomorrow." They crossed a mound of earth, and a gently flowing river appeared before them. Although it was dark, Ah Dai’s exceptional vision allowed him to see the clarity of the river water. He squatted beside the river, scooped up some water and drank it. The coolness refreshed him immediately. Repeatedly cupping up the refreshingly cool river water, he cleansed away his fatigue rapidly.
Xuan Yue sat beside Ah Dai; she let out a long sigh as all day’s fast pace had depleted her spiritual power. The sweat had drenched her white mage robe. She sat down and lay down on the riverside grass, breathing lightly. All she wanted to do at that moment was catch some sleep. After Ah Dai cleaned himself, he saw Xuan Yue’s tired face, and an ache welled up in his heart. A strange feeling that he hadn’t experienced for a long time arose. He said concerningly, "You have sweat so much. I think you should take a bath here. On our way, we passed a grove which seemed to have many wild fruits, I recognized some that are edible. Let them be our dinner. Eat and then have a good rest. Sleeping like this is not good for your health." As he spoke, he pressed his big hand on Xuan Yue’s shoulder and transferred his true Qi into her.
With the support of Ah Dai’s true Qi, Xuan Yue’s spirits revived somewhat. She sat up from the grass and inhaled the cool air deeply, "It has been so long since I’ve felt this tired."
Quickly, Ah Dai said: "It was my mistake, I shouldn’t have rushed you; why don’t you take a bath? Best to wash your ritual robe as well and putting on a fresh set of clothes. I will look for fruits. By the time I return, you probably would have finished bathing. Let’s then have a proper meal and proceed slowly tomorrow." Finishing his words, he took off towards the grove.
Watching Ah Dai’s receding figure, Xuan Yue smiled faintly. Despite the fatigue, she felt genuinely joyful in her heart. She admired Ah Dai’s unyielding loyalty towards his friends. She mentally traced back to their earlier point of departure in the orchard and reckoned that Ah Dai would take at least half an hour to return. The surrounding area was deserted. The crystal clear river in front of her was irresistibly inviting. She looked around to make sure no one was present before slowly removing her white Light Magician’s robe and putting on a set of civilian clothes Ah Dai had given her earlier. Feeling free after the removal of her chest bandage drenched in sweat was immensely refreshing. She checked the depth of the river water, put aside the tool used for her disguise, and slowly stepped into the water. The piercing river water refreshed her weary skin, rejuvenating her spirits as she swam around. Xuan Yue took a potion from her Phoenix’s Blood to clean off her disguise, intending to reapply it after her bath.
The shallow river only reached up to Xuan Yue’s waist. It’s bottom was full of smooth pebbles. In the amazing comfort, Xuan Yue had completely lost track of time, soaking in the blissful sensation of the cool water around her.
A bright moon, as round as a jade dish, gradually ascended into the sky. The moonlight seemed to shy away from Xuan Yue’s stunning beauty, revealing only half of its face. Among the crisp, clear water, Xuan Yue continued to enjoy her bath more than ever.
Anxious to keep Xuan Yue from waiting, Ah Dai swiftly located the orchard he had identified earlier. He picked out four or five types of fruits that were in season. After packing them into his space barrier, he hovered up in the air again, heading back in the direction of the river.
The continuous sound of water splashing pierced the silence of the night. When Ah Dai landed and trod towards the river, he thought that "Brother Xuan Re" must have spent too much time enjoying the bath. As he thought about it and rounded the mound of gravel, he was shocked to lay eyes on the sight in the river. Under the shadow of a half moon, the clear waters mirrored a dancing reflection. Amid splashes of water, a body, as white as porcelain, swayed gracefully. The water droplets, like pearls, slid off that jadelike skin and were flung into the air by the blue hair cascading down. The person’s curvaceous figure was captivating, and when they turned in Ah Dai’s direction, he recognized the familiar, stunning face. Although she was lost in the joy of bathing and was not aware of his presence, she was enchanting as her figure swayed gracefully in the water.
Ah Dai trembled from head to toe, his mind fully consumed by the goddess-like figure before him. When his gaze inadvertently swept over the white magic robe on the bank, he realized who the sublime figure in the river belonged to. Stunned, he was fixated on the beautiful body and his nose began to bleed, leaving two streaks of blood on his black robe - his gown of a common man.
A startled scream resonated when Xuan Yue, who was enjoying her bath in the river, noticed Ah Dai. With her arms wrapped around her bosom and half-crouched in the water, droplets of water glistening in the moonlight dripped off her hair. The sight of her was as captivating as a hibiscus emerging from the water. When Ah Dai’s presence suddenly registered, she too was paralyzed, unable to react to the unexpected situation. Numerous thoughts flooded her mind. She had wanted to keep her identity a secret, but now she was wholly exposed. They, one standing on her mound and the other in the water, gazed at each other, their hearts pounding.
After a long while, Ah Dai bit his slightly dry lips and murmured: "Brother Xuan Re, how... how did you turn into a woman? I... I didn’t mean to...".
Xuan Yue’s pretty face instantly went pale, realizing that she could no longer hide her identity. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her heart filled with a complex mix of emotions.
Seeing Xuan Yue cry, Ah Dai felt a pang in his heart. Unthinkingly, he blurted, "Brother, ah, no, miss, you should come up. The water’s cold. Stay too long and you’ll freeze." Suddenly, he saw a ripple in the water behind Xuan Yue. Alarm coursed through him, and he dove towards Xuan Yue like a bolt of lightning, shouting, "Watch out behind you!"
Lost in a whirl of emotions, Xuan Yue reacted slower than usual. Ah Dai’s shout startled her, and a pain like a needle prick suddenly shot through her back. The pain only lasted a moment before turning numb. Xuan Yue was instantly fearful, knowing she had been poisoned. Ah Dai had already flown up to Xuan Yue, his blue solid state energy morphing into a streak of light tightly wrapped around Xuan Yue’s body. Pressing a palm against the water’s surface, he used the rebounding force to lift himself and Xuan Yue into the air. Xuan Yue’s bare body was suddenly exposed to the air. The numbness spread quickly throughout her body. Xuan Yue’s head felt heavy, and her mind began to blur as her consciousness wavered.
Ah Dai was stunned at the sight of the green snake on Xuan Yue’s back. The snake writhed continuously after leaving the water. A black line ran along its centre, an eerie sight. Ah Dai felt a chill in his heart. Having memorized Goris’ book about poison, he recognized this as a highly venomous bamboo viper. If not treated promptly after a bite, it could kill within half an hour. A flash of blue light, and the snake turned into powder that scattered in the air. Ah Dai didn’t waste time. He slapped the water’s surface again, using the recoil to glide to the shore while constantly transferring his True Qi into Xuan Yue’s body to prevent the spread of the poison. Xuan Yue’s shoulder, where the snake had bitten, had turned as black as a palm-sized patch. She had passed out.
Ah Dai ignored the captivating sight of Xuan Yue’s body, first blocking a few of her meridians. He then removed his black robe and carefully laid Xuan Yue down on it. Holding onto Xuan Yue’s shoulders, he bent down to her wound, opening his mouth to suck out the poisoned blood. As Ah Dai sucked, Xuan Yue’s body involuntarily spasmed while she whimpered in pain. Ah Dai spat out the poisonous blood to one side, then once again sucked on Xuan Yue’s wound. As he sucked out the poisoned blood, he used his True Qi to push the poison towards the wound. After sucking out more than ten mouthfuls of purple-black blood, Xuan Yue’s shoulder started regaining its original whiteness. Ah Dai took a deep breath. Due to the poison, his tongue had become somewhat numb. He drew open a space barrier, taking out the snake venom antidote Goris left for him, carefully applying it to Xuan Yue’s shoulder and ingesting some himself. Feeling Xuan Yue’s breaths grow more stable, Ah Dai let out a sigh. Everything happened in the blink of an eye, from spotting Xuan Yue’s naked body to treating her poisoning, it took no more than five minutes.
Ah Dai caught his breath for a moment, and with his deep reserves of True Qi, forced out the poison that had invaded his body. After doing so, he found the time to look at the young woman before him. Xuan Yue was shaking slightly, as if she was cold. Startled, Ah Dai looked around and saw clothes Xuan Yue had prepared on the shore. He quickly picked them up and carefully helped dress Xuan Yue. His hands trembled as he did so. Every accidental touch against Xuan Yue’s soft skin made his heart shiver. Xuan Yue’s jade-like body was incredibly enticing. Ah Dai found it hard to bear. Fortunately, the clothes were a loose fit, meant for Ah Dai’s of average-built stature. Despite his trembling hands, he managed to get them on. After completing this "herculean" task, Ah Dai gasped for breath. It felt as if he had fought a harder battle than when he dueled with Larthas. Xuan Yue was still trembling slightly. Ah Dai picked her up, the softness of the body underneath the clothing clear to his touch. He managed to control his emotions, gracefully rising and sitting down next to a large tree by the riverside, holding Xuan Yue in his arms, continuously infusing her with his True Qi. After a while, whether due to the True Qi or Ah Dai’s own warmth, Xuan Yue finally stopped shaking.
