Chapter 1664: One Down
No man is an island.
I don’t know where I heard that phrase before, but it’s very accurate.
No single person can do everything by themselves; if they could, then they would be a god.
But no.
Every disease needs a doctor to treat it.
Every broken door needs a carpenter to fix it.
Every toilet needs a plumber to unclog it.
The long and short of it is that societies need all sorts of people in all sorts of positions.
And the moment any of these people die, the moment any of these positions suddenly disappear, that’s when society begins to collapse.
It’s almost like an ecosystem.
You take away one part, and the whole thing just...shuts down.
-The words of an ecologist/politician, who made an argument against the replacement of working folks.
...
<=Well...that’s not good...=>
Logos and Pathos kept most of their senses tuned to the battles between Razorstella, Frosttusk, Rianna, and Hurricroak and the False Crusaders.
Why?
Because the kaijin had been more or less tempted into using moves that could easily cause massive collateral damage if they had used these techniques beyond the hallowed halls of the library.
Rianna’s arrows were fired with such force that any building or person unlucky enough to be in the pathway of a missed shot would’ve ended up splattered or worse.
Frosttusk’s attacks were already fairly dangerous due to his need to sap heat from the nearest surface, but he had gone above and beyond that. His entire room was covered floor to ceiling in ice and frost while the temperature in this room was cold enough to maintain a cryogenically frozen corpse.
Razorstella had been swinging larger and larger kicks that transformed into massive scars on the library shelves and books. If anybody was to get caught up in such an attack, they would end up with a bad case of receiving an impromptu vivisection.
As for Hurricroak, well...let’s just say that being a walking hurricane had obvious downsides.
Anyone of these attacks going off by themselves would already cause some minor issues and damages to the library as a whole. But having them happen one after the other in such quick succession...there was a very real possibility that all of the rooms would need to be merged in order to prevent any further damages to the library.
Doing so, however, would ultimately change the battlefield.
Both the Erupting Dawn warriors and the Sacred Flame traitors were quite adept at working together, to the point that they could easily rival the kaijin in terms of coordination. On top of that, because of the latter’s [Flame of Ambition] being detected in having a self-synergy effect, it was determined that isolation was going to be a key factor in beating them.
At least, that was the impression that the curators received once they had managed to isolate the one False Crusader that Hurricroak was fighting.
Regardless, the curators had gone through painstaking efforts in isolating the enemy; it would be a shame to let it all go to waste.
Then again, they also didn’t want their home to be destroyed because of some overzealous kaijin attacks.
=If this level of activity keeps up, we’re going to have to merge at least three of the rooms to prevent permanent damage,= Logos calculated after looking over all of the battles. =Unless one of them makes a decisive claim for victory...=
Pathos agreed with the sentiment but shook their head once they looked over all the battles themselves.
<That may be the case for the kaijin and mortals fighting the Erupting Dawn Empire, but the battles against the Sacred Flame guys are looking...well...bleak,> Pathos commented. <Of course, I have full faith that our kaijin will be able to eventually overpower their—wait a minute. >
Pathos paused as a sudden change in the battlefield caught her attention.
Thankfully, it was a positive change.
= It appears that Rianna has managed to force her opponent into a losing situation...interesting...=
<Well then...looks like I’m going to have to re-evaluate my initial observations of that insectile amazon. How delightful. >
...Wait, what did she do?...
’Alright, fuck it,’ Rianna thought to herself as she readied her arrows. ’I guess I have to use what the curators called the "scientific method"...still a silly name.’
Once Rianna had all but confirmed that Vitani wasn’t able to detect her when she used [Chaos] to cloak herself, she used that little bit of information to her advantage.
To be more precise, since she could more or less attack indiscriminately without worrying about any form of backlash or retaliation, Rianna decided to take her time and see what she had in her arsenal to bring down Vitani for good.
Her method for determining this could best be described as crude, cruel, and unusual.
First, she tried to determine the type of energy that could be used to inflict serious harm.
The arrows that were fired via pure physical effort simply shot right through the undead fuck and did nothing but force the guy to regenerate the miniscule points of damage that were created. In some cases, the arrows just bounced off the guy like sticks bouncing off an iron shield.
Arrows infused aether worked to a better extent, forcing an even greater expenditure of energy, but it still didn’t amount to much.
[Chaos]-infused arrows technically did more damage than the aether-infused arrows, but it still just amounted to more and more energy being burned up to restore the wounds.
Based on this criterion, Rianna simply used the [Chaos] arrows, as they least caused the fucker to slow down in a bit more obvious manner than the other two types of arrows at her disposal.
"Better than nothing, I suppose," Rianna thought to herself as she notched her arrows.
Once Rianna had determined the tool, she then proceeded to try multiple methods of tearing Vitani apart...or at the very least, figure out a way to make them useless in a fight.
She first relied on her experience as a hunter and aimed for the vital parts of the corpse warrior, at least the parts that would be considered vital to a human, and fired powerful arrows that either skewered them out of the man’s body or straight-up left holes the size of tennis balls.
Unfortunately, as previously established, Vitani just kept regenerating from every single wound with disturbing speed and thoroughness.
Frustration mounting, Rianna decided to forego the methodical killing that defined a hunter and tried to mimic something she had seen in one of the archived "videos" in the library: a machine gun.
With dexterity and speed that would make even the most agile of monkeys jealous, Rianna fired arrow after arrow at Vitani without caring if she hit anything vital. All she cared about was making sure the arrows hit.
This rapid fire method weakened the power behind every shot, but it was still strong enough to tear limbs from their sockets and pincushion them to the wall.
Incidentally, that was precisely how she managed to figure out the weakness behind these immortal assholes.
Completely by accident, she had ripped off Vitani’s arm with one arrow and nailed it with a second the moment it tried to regenerate.
This action didn’t destroy the offending limb, but instead, it locked the limb completely down and prevented it from returning to Vitani.
"Huh..."
From what Rianna could glean, the reason was because the limb was dealing with multiple wounds, and that this somehow caused the [Flame of Ambition] inside of it to get stuck in a loop.
It needed to burn down in order to reattach to Vitani, but it also needed to repair the damage from the new arrow piercing.
Rianna understood that there was a proper order of operations for situation such as this, but the aether flame didn’t know that.
As such, it kept trying to perform both tasks at once and got stuck in a loop because of it.
And this loop was precisely what Rianna needed to bring this undead fuck down.
"I think this trick was called a...double tap? Yeah, that’s sounds about right."
Now that she knew what to do, the battle with Vitani ended at a laughably fast pace.
First, she methodically removed each limb, making sure that they were pinned in places that were hard to reach or too far to be worth the effort.
Then, the moment she saw the flames about to engulf the limbs, she fired an additional arrow to get them stuck in that same loop.
The end result was a complete victory for herself, and the False Crusader being left in pieces.
Living pieces.
Despite being torn to shreds and nailed to the wall in a dozen pieces, Vitani was somehow still alive.
Needless to say, the man wasn’t happy about his situation in the slightest and had a the vocabulary necessary to make this point.
"What the fuck?! What did you do to me, you stupid bitch?! Put me back together this instant or I swear to the ancestors that I’ll —"
Before Vitani could get another word, though, Rianna fired a third arrow directly into the dead man’s tongue.
"Noisy like a cricket in heat..."
