Chapter 1662: ...Even when reversed

Rage.

Rage is said to be one of the greatest motivators in the world.

Rage over your inadequacies and become better to get rid of those feelings.

Rage that your enemy exists and you have to get rid of them no matter the cost.

Rage over the injustices of the world so that you may be motivated to fix it all.

But at the same time, rage can make one blind to the reality of their situation and make them miss the little details.

And force the enraged to become stuck in...less than favorable situations.

-The philosophy of a once famous berserker who learned how to goddamn chill.

...Speaking of rage...

’Hurricroak...do you need assistance in dealing with—’

[I AM GOING TO TEAR THIS MOTHERFUCKER’S SPINE THROUGH HIS ASS AND BEAT HIM TO DEATH WITH IT!]

’Never mind.’

<=Yeah, we’ve just been sticking with analysis after she told us that she would use any assistance we send her way as living billy clubs.=>

’Whoa...’

...Oh, Hurricroak is mad...

Kaijin are beings of [Desire] and [Chaos]. In other words, they are emotions given form and the vaguest ability to think.

However, when it comes to the kaijin that have some connection to a formerly human life, they’re a bit more...volatile.

Logos and Pathos said that despite the loyalty and power that these partially reincarnated souls get infused with upon becoming kaijin, small bits of their existences still more or less crave their past and the sensations that only mortals can perceive.

Usually, this isn’t a problem.

But every now and again, when the moon is full or the tide is low or a fucking pin drops in a church and causes a very loud echoing ring, a reincarnated kaijin will end up getting caught up in their feelings and old memories and more or less go on an emotional bender like a ghost with unfinished business.

In Hurricroak’s case, her triggering moment was the undead fuckface in front of her trying to sweet-talk her into making a stupid fucking deal.

A deal that, as much as she wanted to deny, sounded quite sweet to her ears.

"Why are you fighting it?" the False Crusader asked for the thousandth time during this battle as it dodged Hurricroak’s wild attacks. "Don’t you want to be human long enough to hold him again?!"

[SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!] Hurricroak shouted as she launched multiple balls of thunder and lightning in the direction of the False Crusader. [SHUT YOUR STUPID MOUTH!]

Immediately after releasing this barrage of electrical power, Hurricroak’s arm transformed to resemble the claws of tigers before she immediately attempted to close the gap and rip the fucker’s head off.

Unfortunately, the False Crusader managed to pull off its weird disappearing trick once again before the blow could actually land.

"Why are you rejecting my offer? Don’t you want to see him again?"

[RAGH! EITHER SHUT UP OR SAY SOMETHING NEW!]

Neither Hurricroak nor the curators were able to determine the precise reason why this weird False Crusader was able to dig up the frog kaijin’s past, but they had a theory.

The [Sacred Flame], as confirmed by Lady Serena, had the ability to look deeply into one’s soul and see every mark of karmic action that had been performed by an individual.

It should actually be noted that when Serena and Zhen Liu first met, the former used such a technique on the latter to determine if they were worthy of trust. Surprisingly, the lack of karmic scarring is what caused Serena to trust him in the first place.

Back to the matter at hand, the [Flame of Ambition], name still pending, had powers similar to the [Sacred Flame] because it was still technically an offshoot.

As to why it was able to parse through the memory of a kaijin, well, the explanation was actually quite simple...and technically should’ve been improbable.

Hurricroak used to be human and still remembered some of her old life’s memories. Those memories weren’t entirely lost when she was reborn, but they were definitely hidden away in some corner of her soul.

The [Flame of Ambition] was technically made of a power that was older than aether, on the same level as [Chaos] in fact.

Therefore, the [Flame of Ambition] could ignore Hurricroak’s innate defenses and poke at things that not even she was aware of.

And it was trying to use this knowledge to either piss her off or get her to make a diabolic deal with it.

So far, it was succeeding on the former but flailing on the latter.

The False Crusader, however, didn’t let up.

It kept dodging Hurricroak’s increasingly wild swings and kept asking the same things over and over again.

"Don’t you miss him?"

"Don’t you want to hold him in your arms again? Your real ones?"

"Do you really think that he still loves you, now that you’re a monster?"

And then following those questions up with the same promises over and over again.

"I can reunite you."

"I can make you human again."

"I can guarantee that he will fall in love with you all over again."

In response, Hurricroak also repeated the same phrase over and over again.

[Shut up.]

[Shut up!]

[SHUT THE FUCK UP!]

And with every reiteration of this mantra of rage, the [Chaos] composing Hurricroak’s being became more agitated, more violent, and more vicious.

If this power were exposed to the wider world, Hurricroak would’ve found herself in the eye of a several-mile-wide storm that would flood even the desert. Thankfully, though, she was losing her shit in the [Library of Nowhere], a space that was explicitly designed to keep such tantruming kaijin contained...to an extent.

[Alright, that fucking does it!] Hurricroak roared as she began to circulate [Chaos] to an absurd degree inside herself. [You’re about to learn the meaning of thunderstruck!]

Up until this point, Hurricroak had yet to use any actual aether arts or [Chaos] arts during her vicious assault against the False Crusader.

The reason being was that she had been trying to fulfill the goal of capturing this weird False Crusader so that the Maestro and the curators could take their time in studying the fucker in a controlled cell.

However, after being subjected to this False Crusader’s persistent verbal assault...Hurricroak couldn’t give less of a shit; she just wanted blood.

A whole mess of it.

Therefore, she decided to stop holding back and make use of something that she had been cooking in the background.

It was a little trick she came up with amafter she had seen the members of Mysticlassic do something similar not too long ago.

[Chaos Art: Thunder Orchestra!]

After charging her palms with [Chaos], Hurricroak clapped them together and released a giant storm cloud from her body that obscured her form.

If one were to stare into this roiling storm cloud, they would be able to make out the faintest images of monstrous beasts surging, forming and disappearing in the clouds.

Not only that, but one would also be able to hear the sounds of an orchestra starting to warm up, mixed in with the sounds of thunder and lighting cracking and breaking.

The False Crusader looked dumbfounded at the sight of this attack, as he was fully expecting Hurricroak to just continue lashing out with indiscriminate bolts of lighting and blasts of thunder.

The undead fucker wasn’t expecting to hear a horn section stating to warm up.

Amongst flashes of lighting, Hurricroak’s silhouette posing like a conductor could be barely seen.

[Brass...] Hurricroak began to say as she made gestures to an invisible orchestra.

The storm cloud surrounding Hurricroak suddenly began to change as brass horns made of lighting manifested, all while being held by animals made of clouds.

[...Blast!]

Under her direction, the orchestral section of brass-horned animals began to play an upbeat musical piece that was as loud as thunder. This music then transformed into a blast of thunder and lighting that ripped through the air and slammed into the False Crusader before they even had a chance to fully realize what was going on in the first place.

If the target had been a normal aether warrior, this opening move would’ve been enough to horribly injured or outright kill most of them.

But alas, the undead fucker was much tougher than anticipated.

The False Crusader looked, well, looked like he had just been struck by lightning, but the [Flame of Ambition] inside them was already working over time to heal the damage.

Now, this should’ve been the moment Hurricroak stopped her assault and tried to capture the regenerating shit heel...but she didn’t.

Instead, she entered full conductor mode and got ready for the next round of attacks.

[Woodwind Whirlwind!]

With a wave of her hand, the horn-holding animals were replaced with ones holding woodwind instruments made of swirling winds.

And with a raise of her baton, a series of wind spears formed before firing off in perfect staccato, impaling the undead fucker before the first round of healing actually took effect.
