Chapter 62: 62 | Trouble, Heading To The Hero Association
Unfortunately—
Lyra had witnessed the entire scene from the hallway.
She stood there, staring at the beautiful blue gemstone resting on Mira’s neck. Then, she stared at Dexter’s empty hands.
Then, she turned around and walked back to her room without making a single sound.
Dexter immediately felt a massive headache coming.
Giving a highly valuable, beautiful gift to one girl while leaving the other two completely empty-handed was a massive, amateur mistake in household management.
He made a mental note in his head. ’Buy two more matching necklaces as soon as possible. Otherwise, my life in this house will become unlivable.’
After settling the immediate matter, Dexter wrapped his blade in clothing and place it behind him.
After making necessary preparations, he looked toward the girls and spoke.
"I’m heading out to the Hero Association branch now," he said, his tone turning serious.
"I will be officially obtaining my Hero License today."
The girls remained silent.
Then, Mira suddenly spoke, her voice quiet but carrying a rare trace of worry.
"I don’t understand why you are so determined to walk down this path, Dexter."
Dexter paused, looking at her.
Mira’s eyes remained fixed on the television screen.
"We ended up like this because of dungeons. And yet, you are still running toward them with open arms."
She paused.
"I don’t approve of it. But you are a man. So I know you will do whatever you want anyway, regardless of what we say."
Dexter let out a soft laugh, his eyes warm as he looked at her.
"Your reverse psychology won’t work on me, Mira. Just like it didn’t work the first time we met."
Mira snorted.
Dexter’s expression softened, his voice turning incredibly serious and gentle.
"I’ll be careful, Mira. I promise you."
"And don’t worry." He grinned, his white teeth showing. "Your husband is incredibly tough. I’m not that easy to kill."
Mira opened her mouth to retort, but then stopped herself.
She recalled the dead assassins on the bridge. They had been experienced, professional killers, yet Dexter had managed to defeat them completely on his own. He was no longer the weak, unawakened youth she had first met.
Eventually, she simply turned her head away. "Hmph."
Dexter smiled. He waved toward the girls. "I’m leaving now. Take care of yourselves."
He walked to the front door, opened it, and stepped onto the porch.
Two seconds later—
He pushed the door open again, sticking his head back inside.
"And remember, do not open the door for anyone while I am gone. No matter who they claim to be."
The response came instantly, loud and highly irritated.
"You are not our father!" Mira growled.
Dexter chuckled, closed the heavy door, and locked it from the outside.
As he walked down the cracked concrete steps, the cool morning air brushed against his face, clearing his mind.
He was finally ready. Today, he would officially enter the world of Heroes.
’’’
As Dexter walked down the quiet, sunlit street, his mind was busy calculating his next moves.
The immediate neighborhood was peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaotic, battle-torn streets during the dungeon outbreak.
He noticed a sleek black car parked near the curb about fifty meters down the road. It was a high-end BMW, its polished metal chassis reflecting the bright morning sun. It looked completely out of place in this run-down neighborhood, where most residents drove old, dented trucks or relied on the squeaky public transit buses.
Dexter walked past it, his eyes lingering on the luxury vehicle for a brief second before continuing forward.
A few steps later, he stopped in front of a familiar house.
Tessa’s house.
The heavy iron gate was closed tightly, and a small brass padlock hung from the latch. The windows were shut, and the heavy fabric curtains were drawn closed, keeping the interior dark and silent.
Seeing her house reminded him of her.
as he looked at her property more closely, his sharp senses registered something unusual.
Her house had survived the outbreak completely unscathed. In fact, out of the dozens of homes on this long, dusty street, only five had remained entirely untouched by the rampaging monsters.
Tessa’s house had been one.
It was a highly unusual statistical anomaly.
Monsters during an outbreak were driven by a chaotic, violent urge to destroy everything in their path. They did not usually bypass specific, wooden houses unless there was a powerful deterrent or a reason to avoid them.
Dexter shook his head, pushing the suspicious thoughts away.
He turned and continued walking toward the main road where he could catch a bus to the Hunter Association branch.
Just then—
The smooth, quiet hum of a high-end engine echoed from behind him.
He stopped and turned around.
The sleek black BMW he had passed earlier was slowly, smoothly rolling forward, pulling up right beside him on the dusty roadside.
The tinted glass window slid down silently and Rachel’s beautiful, smiling face appeared from the air-conditioned interior of the car. Her red hair shifted over her shoulder as she leaned toward the passenger side window.
"Hey there, Dexter!" she waved enthusiastically, her green eyes bright. "Get in! I told you I’d be waiting for you."
Dexter blinked in surprise, looking at the luxury car and then back down the road toward his bungalow.
"You were actually waiting for me?" he asked, a bit dumbfounded.
"Of course I was," Rachel nodded proudly, her lips curving into a playful pout. "I’m your assigned representative, remember? It’s my job to ensure you reach the Association safely and complete your registration without any issues. Besides, it’s much faster than waiting for the old public bus."
Dexter instinctively turned his head, glancing back toward the far end of the street where his small bungalow stood.
The heavy front door remained closed, and there was no sign of his wives at the windows. He let out a silent, massive sigh of relief.
If Mira or Selene were to look out the window right now and see him getting into a luxury car with the very same woman who had just hugged him on their porch, he would probably return tonight to find the house frozen solid or burned to the ground.
He looked back at Rachel, scratching his cheek awkwardly.
Why was this wealthy, high-status woman showing so much personal interest in him?
If they had known each other for years, he would have assumed she had some hidden, calculated motive—perhaps she wanted to use his strength for her own guild, or she wanted to access some non-existent family fortune.
But they had literally just met a couple of days ago. During their brief conversation at the hotel bar, they had simply gotten along well. But that was just a casual chat.
Yet, here she was, waiting for him in her private car, offering him a ride, and teasing him like an old friend.
Dexter could not understand it. Perhaps rich women were simply more forward and direct or perhaps she simply enjoyed the thrill of a challenge.
Rachel pouted from inside the car, her fingers tapping against the leather-wrapped steering wheel.
"Come on, Dexter," she coaxed, her voice soft. "I’m not going to kidnap you or bite you. It’s just a simple, comfortable ride to the branch office. Please?"
Dexter looked at her beautiful, pleading green eyes, and then at the clean, luxurious leather seats of the passenger side.
Seeing a stunning woman making puppy eyes at him while offering a free ride in a luxury car was surprisingly difficult to refuse.
Eventually, he let out a defeated sigh and smiled. "Fine. But just a ride, okay?"
Rachel’s face lit up with a brilliant, beautiful smile. "Deal! Get in."
Dexter opened the heavy passenger door and stepped inside.
The interior of the BMW was absolutely incredible. It felt like stepping into an entirely different world, far away from the dusty, run-down streets of the outer district. The leather seats were incredibly soft, conforming perfectly to his back, and the air conditioning was cool and carried a faint, refreshing scent of pine.
"Seatbelt, Dexter," Rachel reminded him gently, her eyes lingering on his shoulder as she shifted the car into drive.
"Right," Dexter said, pulling the strap down and clicking it into place.
With a smooth, almost silent purr, the black BMW pulled away from the curb, heading down the dusty street toward the main highway that led straight to the central districts of the city.
Meanwhile—
Behind the closed, blinds of the bungalow’s living room window, three pairs of eyes silently, watched the black car disappear around the far corner of the road.
One pair of dark eyes was cold and narrowed in a deep, burning glare.
One pair of pale, blank eyes was motionless, listening to the fading hum of the high-end engine.
And one pair of eyes, hidden behind active AI glasses, was completely expressionless, recording the entire scene.
The atmosphere inside the small living room suddenly became very, very quiet.
