Chapter 169: Chapter 169: Mission in Hejia Village
The question sent everyone into a temporary utter silence.
Zhou Anran broke into cold sweat. It was the question she dreaded the most that would come from Su Wan, but...
She was also worried Su Wan might find the silence disrespectful, so she wanted to answer it quickly, yet her mind was also totally blank.
Su Wan stared at everyone in bewilderment.
"Auntie Su, our father... went missing some years ago," Xiao Yuxi answered. "He went to the back mountain and never returned."
Upon hearing that, Su Wan’s hands flew to her mouth, and her face was instantly filled with remorse. "I am sorry for asking you such a question, Sister Anran."
Zhou Anran heaved a sigh of relief, sending her daughter a look of approval. "It’s alright, you didn’t know."
Anyway, her husband was currently living well.
Not long after, Xiao Jingran returned. He helped to prescribe medicine for Su Wan before the latter returned home.
"Sister Anran, if you want to visit my place, you already know where it is!" Su Wan said as they sent her off to her carriage.
The sound of hoofbeats felt like her heartbeat returning to normal mode. Zhou Anran heaved a sigh of relief inside.
After dinner, Zhou Wenzhi immediately told his descendants. "Sleep early tonight and get some rest. We will still need to harvest the rice tomorrow."
Everyone nodded and went to their bed. Xiao Qingya immediately slept with her mother.
However, the next day, Zhou Anran found Su Wan in the fields again, already wearing linen clothes suitable for farming activity.
The moment she saw Zhou Anran, she waved excitedly.
"How are your feet?" Zhou Anran glanced at her feet worriedly.
Su Wan waved her hand. "It’s already getting better, not too painful anymore after getting Jingran’s medicine. Your son is really talented."
"Even the physician at home told me I am already fine."
Then, the two of them began to harvest the paddy rice again together, staying side by side.
"Sister Anran, what’s Little Ya doing with that cat?" Su Wan had a shocked look on her face once they got closer to the little one.
She just realized that Xiao Qingya was using a natural resource to cut the rice stalks, a cat’s sharp teeth.
When she heard Su Wan talking about her, Xiao Qingya grinned and lifted Xiao Xue to face Su Wan. Couldn’t resist both the little ones’ cuteness, Su Wan poked the cat’s round belly and Xiao Qingya’s chubby cheek.
It was noon when Xiao Qingya finally decided to take a rest.
She immediately made a discussion with the System.
[Little Ya, you must go to the Hejia Village for this mission to be triggered...]
Her little face was all scrunched up. [How do you know?]
[I can feel it! Believe me. I am your loyal System and... and follower. I will never betray you!] The System began to declare its loyalty, rubbing itself against her.
Xiao Qingya snorted. [You can feel it?]
[I know it is hard to believe but you have to do it. Do you remember that I can gauge when the mission will appear?] The System paused a little. [I can feel it’s from Hejia Village.]
[Host, it’s an important mission. You have to do it. The rewards are also good...] The System trailed off.
[Fine, fine!] Xiao Qingya put her hand on her chin, thinking carefully. She scratched her head. [I need to find a plausible reason to make my mother or brothers bring me there.]
She had decided she would do that after they finished harvesting the rice.
Xiao Yuxi came over to her side again, and upon seeing her shadow, Xiao Xue already jumped from Xiao Qingya’s lap and ran away.
"Eh, Xiao Xue, where are you going?" She was a little bewildered.
The System ignored her, meowing incessantly as if complaining. [Little Ya, don’t you dare tell me to work overtime again!]
Xiao Qingya touched her nose. "Eldest Sister... Xuexue is just going to catch some mouse."
The System glared at her. Catch some mouse? It wasn’t a real cat! However, despite its complaint, the four legs never stopped moving at all.
Its host really had a strange idea. It even suspected that once Xiao Fenghao heard the idea, he would really send it to catch a mouse and not be allowed to get dried fish until it caught one!
That insidious teenager would definitely do it!
After all, he had stolen its dried fish once and replaced it with a dead mouse! As an almighty System, how could it eat a mouse?!
"Oh, catching a mouse?" Xiao Yuxi muttered, nodding in understanding. "I almost forgot our fields have a lot of mice. Our Xuexue is really diligent."
They needed three days before they finished harvesting all of the paddy rice. The Zhou and Xiao family didn’t forget to reward the people who had helped them.
Two out of three parts of the paddy rice that they were going to sell would go to Magistrate Xu while Merchant Yang would get the remaining one part.
Shun Zi didn’t mind at all. Even if he increased the price slightly, with the Zhou and Xiao family’s improved harvest per mu, whoever planted the rice seeds would get multiple times more than worth the price.
Magistrate Xu also had personally promoted his shop.
He had already chosen some diligent farm workers who could work on his own fields. As for the rest of the paddy rice, he would give them as rewards to some hard-working farmers.
The family still had a lot of rice seeds left even after they sold them to Magistrate Xu and Merchant Yang.
"Father, I am going to distribute the rice seeds to people from Hejia Village," Zhou Anran said as they were having dinner. "They have helped us a lot. Although we have given them some rice seeds before, it’s far from enough."
Xiao Yuyan nodded in agreement. "Aunt Dong and Aunt Liu have been asking about the rice seeds when we met them at the county’s market a few days ago."
As he stroked his beard, Zhou Wenzhi asked, "When are you going to do it?"
Xiao Qingya’s eyes lit up when she heard that. She had been looking for a way to beg her family members so that they could go to Hejia Village.
"We can go in a few days after Magistrate Xu and Old Shun finish with the remaining rice seeds in our grain room," Zhou Anran told him.
Both parties took their part directly after they were harvested, but for the fields that were closer to the Zhou’s family’s old house, the rice seeds were taken to their house first.
As they discussed the amount they were going to distribute to their neighbors in Hejia Village, they heard some knocks on the door.
Zhou Wenzhi told Xiao Fenghao to open the door, and the latter immediately went to the front door.
"Mr. Han," Xiao Fenghao greeted the guest.
When Han Tingxun heard that the siblings wanted to learn martial arts, it was him who found a talented teacher for them.
The teacher was one of his own men, so without a doubt that Han Tingxun’s martial art was above the teacher.
"Is Master Zhou or Mrs. Zhou at home?" Han Tingxun asked.
Xiao Fenghao nodded, opened the door wider for him to come inside. "Yes, please come in, Mr. Han."
Zhou Wenzhi got up when he saw it was Han Tingxun. "Mr. Han, what brings you here?"
After Zhou Wenzhi gave him a chair, he sat down. The other Xiao siblings scrambled to get out of the room.
Xiao Yuyan went to prepare some tea and refreshment while Xiao Yuxi picked Xiao Qingya away.
"Master Zhou, Mrs. Zhou," he began. "I will be straightforward with you two. Is it possible for my Master to purchase some rice seeds from you?"
Zhou Anran subconsciously gripped the edge of her garment tighter. She glanced at Zhou Wenzhi, biting her lip and nodded at him, letting her father decide.
"May we know how much His Excellency intends to purchase?" Zhou Wenzhi asked.
Han Tingxun answered. "Three hundred jin. We intend to bring the rice seeds to the Capital."
It was still within an amount they could give, so Zhou Wenzhi immediately agreed.
The next day, Su Wan visited their house again. "Sister Anran, you are going to Hejia Village the day after tomorrow? Can I come?"
Zhou Anran was relieved that Xiao Yuanwei never appeared, and she immediately nodded. Smiling, she told her, "Of course, you can come."
When the day arrived, Xiao Qingya watched in anticipation as the familiar road to Hejia Village finally appeared.
She was really a little anxious about this mission; she had a bad feeling, as if something would go wrong any moment.
So far, she had completed all of the missions and gained the reward. She was truly lucky... but could her luck help her to finish the mission this time too?
The mission wasn’t immediately triggered. It happened in the middle of the night when everyone was already asleep.
[Mission Triggered!]
