Chapter 162: Chapter 162: Not Willing
"I consider it my fault for marrying someone as heartless as you. I was so blind back then." Zhou Wenzhi was shaking his head with heartache.
Chen Huayun was startled, her face as white as a sheet of paper after she heard Zhou Wenzhi’s words. She pulled her hand from his grasp, latching onto his arm.
"Husband... y-you are joking, right?" She stuttered, her eyes went wide in disbelief. "You are not serious..."
In fact, Zhou Wenzhi had told her he would divorce her a few times before. The first time she ignored his warning, nothing happened. He only gave her another warning and the same talk about divorcing her if she acted out of line again.
The repeated warning made her grow bold, and she entirely ignored his threat.
However, the few times he said he would divorce her happened in private. No one else knew about it.
Now, Zhou Wenzhi was saying it in front of so many people, as if he was making an announcement instead of the usual empty warning.
"Husband, you can’t do this to me!" She insisted. "W-we have had t... three kids together. Are you willing to see the family we have built together fall apart?"
She became increasingly more alarmed when she saw his cold and expressionless face.
Zhou Wenzhi frowned deeply. "It was you who wanted the family to fall apart! How heartless and greedy you are to sacrifice your own family members."
He shook his head again, still finding it unbelievable she was the same person with whom he had spent nearly forty years together.
Chen Huayun used to be so kind, always speaking softly and considerate, always filial to the elderly. He didn’t know when things started to change gradually.
Perhaps... had he been too indulgent and let her get away with things easily?
"I didn’t!" Chen Huayun desperately denied. "Who did I sacrifice?! Isn’t everyone healthy, safe and sound?"
"Instead... it’s Anran who heartlessly threw her eldest brother to the yamen," she added tearfully.
Zhou Wenzhi tried to pull his hand out of her tight grip to no avail, frowning deeply. He let out a breath, and told her sternly.
"If you want to blame someone for throwing Shiming into the yamen, blame me. It has nothing to do with Ran’er at all. I was the one who had done it!"
His tone tinged with disappointment. "Look at yourself. Even until now, you are still defending what Shiming had done."
Chen Huayun was so stunned upon hearing her husband’s words that she momentarily loosened her grip on his hand. Zhou Wenzhi took the chance to pull his hand and motioned for his daughter and grandson to come inside.
He really didn’t want the neighbors to witness such a farce.
Alas, Chen Huayun soon recovered and before Zhou Wenzhi could close the door, Chen Huayun was quick enough to slip herself inside the house.
"Husband, I-I..." she latched on to his arm again, this time hugging it tightly. Her eyes flitted around the room, slightly unwilling, but she still said it.
"Y-yes, it was Shiming’s fault. He was too ruthless and shouldn’t treat Zhou Anran’s children like that." She paused, biting her lower lip and making a promise. "D-don’t worry... I-I will absolutely teach him better. He won’t do that again!"
She was still desperately trying to salvage the situation. As long as Zhou Wenzhi softened a little and took back his words, nothing else mattered right now...
Lest Zhou Anran and her children suddenly thought it was a good idea for them to divorce and kept instilling the idea to him!
Zhou Wenzhi furrowed his brows. "Chen Huayun, my decision won’t change."
He let out a sigh. "How many times you gave me such promises and ended up breaking them. I also keep losing face because of your irrational actions! Perhaps, you actually don’t care about me at all."
Chen Huayun jolted, and her face paled at the accusation. "Husband, how can you say such a thing? I care about you a lot of course. Do you remember when we were still engaged, you broke your foot... I-I accompanied you for several days. There was also that incident..."
She quickly listed several things she had done for him throughout their marriages, hoping for him to see how good she was and change his mind.
Zhou Wenzhi’s face remained expressionless as Chen Huayun tried to dig up all the things she had done for him.
Throughout their marriage, was it just her who contributed to it and helped their partner? He also had tried his best to be a good husband for her.
Therefore, even if she tried to guilt trip him, it was no longer working. His conscience was clear, and he was well aware of what he had done for her.
"So... don’t joke about something like that again in front of the children," Chen Huayun added.
Seeing Zhou Wenzhi fall silent, she thought that he had softened again. She heaved a sigh of relief inwardly.
From the corner of her eyes, she suddenly caught the sight of Zhou Anran who was wearing a conflicted expression, and Xiao Jingran with his steady eyes.
She scanned the room fleetingly and had to pretend she didn’t see Zhou Anran’s children hiding from the back of a door, quietly listening to their fight.
Humiliation began to flood her chest.
Zhou Wenzhi was truly helpless. "I will hand over the divorce letter to you in a few days."
Chen Huayun became alarmed again. Her grip on his arm tightened. "Husband, are you not satisfied with me? Tell me what I should do... I-I will definitely change this time. I promise!"
"Change for what?" Zhou Wenzhi shook his head. "I can’t forgive you for what you have done."
The yamen might take her away anytime soon.
"What have I done?" Chen Huayun pressed, determined to clear her name.
"You know what you have done!" Zhou Wenzhi was slowly losing his patience. "You even want to sell your grandchildren to a child trafficker!"
She widened her eyes. How does he know that? She became a little panicked.
In her agitation, she subconsciously blurted any thought crossing her mind just to defend herself. "Husband, it wasn’t me! It was Shu’er..."
"She was the one putting the drug in the youngest daughter’s milk!"
Behind the door, Zhou Shuran’s blood turned cold.
