Chapter 73: Xavier Arrives

The first light of morning crept slowly over Silvermont.

The river outside the villa caught the early sun. The water shimmered pale gold beneath a sky that hadn’t fully decided between night and dawn.

Lucas was already awake.

He stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall in the living room, a cup of coffee in his hand. He hadn’t slept much. Not because he was afraid. But because his mind refused to stop moving.

The Vayne Clan.

Ancient martial artists.

A week ago his biggest problem had been whether his rebate system would activate fast enough to cover rent. Now he was standing in a two-hundred-million-dollar villa waiting for people who apparently operated outside of normal rules entirely.

He took a slow sip of coffee.

Life had a strange sense of humor.

A sound came from behind him. Quiet footsteps. Precise and light in a way that most people could never manage naturally.

Bianca appeared at the edge of the living room. She had clearly not slept either. Yet somehow she looked exactly the same as she had the night before. Not a single detail out of place. Her posture was perfect. Her expression was composed.

She stopped beside him and looked out at the river.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then Lucas glanced sideways at her. "Did you stay up the entire night?"

"Yes."

"You could have slept. I would have been fine for a few hours."

Bianca didn’t look at him. "That isn’t how protection works."

Lucas considered arguing. Then decided against it. Somehow he already knew she wouldn’t budge.

He looked back at the river. "Coffee?"

"No."

"You said that last night about food too."

A brief pause.

"That was different."

Lucas smiled quietly into his cup. He didn’t push further.

Another silence settled between them. But it had the same quality as the night before. Not uncomfortable. Simply two people existing in the same space without the need to fill it with noise.

After a while, Bianca spoke.

"Xavier will arrive within the hour."

Lucas nodded. He had been expecting it. Xavier wasn’t the type to delay once he said he was coming.

Fifty minutes later, a convoy of three black vehicles pulled through the gates of Willow Residence.

No sirens. No fanfare. Just three cars moving with quiet precision through the early morning streets.

They stopped in front of the villa.

The doors opened.

Several men stepped out first. Each one carried themselves differently from ordinary people. Their eyes swept the surroundings the moment they exited the vehicles. Practiced. Automatic. The kind of awareness that came from years of genuine training.

Then the rear door of the middle vehicle opened.

Xavier stepped out.

Lucas watched from the entrance of the villa.

Xavier looked exactly like someone who didn’t need to prove anything to anyone.

He wore no extravagant clothing. No visible display of wealth or status.

Yet the moment he appeared, every single person around him adjusted. Not consciously. Simply instinctively.

Even Bianca straightened almost imperceptibly.

Xavier walked toward the villa entrance. His eyes found Lucas immediately.

He stopped a few feet away.

For a brief moment he simply looked at Lucas. His expression gave nothing away. He wasn’t evaluating him the way most adults evaluated young people. He wasn’t looking for weakness or measuring him against expectations.

He was simply looking. Directly and completely.

Lucas met his gaze without flinching.

Xavier nodded once.

"Lucas."

His voice was exactly as it had been on the phone. Calm. Unhurried. The kind of voice that never needed to be raised to be heard.

"Xavier." Lucas nodded back.

The corner of Xavier’s mouth moved. It wasn’t quite a smile. But it was something.

"You look better than I expected for someone who fought two Vayne Clan members yesterday."

Lucas exhaled a quiet breath. "They looked worse."

Xavier studied him for another second. Then he turned and walked inside.

Lucas followed.

---

They sat in the living room. Xavier’s men positioned themselves outside without being told. Bianca stood near the entrance, silent and watchful.

Xavier looked around the villa briefly. Then back at Lucas.

"Tell me exactly what happened. From the beginning."

Lucas told him everything. He left nothing out. The confrontation with Kai. The restaurant. Blake and Jade appearing. The fight itself.

Xavier listened without interrupting once. His expression didn’t change throughout. He simply absorbed everything with the same steady attention.

When Lucas finished, Xavier was quiet for a moment.

Then he spoke.

"You handled it better than most would have." A pause. "But that doesn’t change where we are now."

Lucas nodded. He hadn’t expected praise to fix the situation.

Xavier leaned forward slightly. "The Vayne Clan won’t let this go. Not publicly. Their entire culture is built on the idea that disrespect must be answered. If they allow one incident to pass without response, it signals weakness to every other clan watching."

"So they’ll come regardless."

"Yes." Xavier’s tone was direct. "The question isn’t whether they’ll respond. The question is how."

Lucas frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

Xavier folded his hands together. "There are factions inside the Vayne Clan. Not everyone thinks the same way. The Clan Leader is old. Calculating. He didn’t build that clan by being reckless."

He paused. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"But there are younger voices. Angrier voices. Alistair being the loudest among them."

Lucas was quiet for a moment. Then something clicked.

"So if the Clan Leader is in control, they investigate first. Move carefully."

Xavier nodded. "Correct."

"But if Alistair pushes hard enough—"

"Then they move fast and they move with force." Xavier’s eyes were steady. "Which is why the next few days matter more than you might realize."

The room was very still.

Lucas set down his coffee cup. His expression was calm but his mind was working quickly.

"So what do we do?"

Xavier looked at him for a long moment. There was something in his expression now that hadn’t been there before. Something that resembled quiet respect.

"We don’t hide." His voice was firm. "Hiding tells them you’re afraid. And afraid people are easier to pressure."

"Then we—"

"We let them come to us." Xavier’s tone was completely certain. "On our terms. In a way that makes the cost of continuing this conflict very clear to even the most stubborn elder in that hall."

Lucas absorbed that slowly. He hadn’t expected that answer. He had assumed Xavier would talk about defense. About protection. About keeping him safe.

Instead Xavier was talking about positioning. About sending a message.

Lucas looked at him carefully. "You already have a plan."

Xavier allowed himself a small, genuine smile for the first time.

"I’ve been thinking about it since last night."

---

Across the city, a black car moved quietly through the morning streets of Silvermont.

Dorian sat in the back seat. His folder was closed on the seat beside him. His eyes watched the city through the window without particular interest.

He had been to Silvermont before. Years ago. He remembered it as a smaller, quieter place. It had grown considerably since then.

His phone buzzed once.

A message from the clan.

*Alistair is pushing the elders again. The Clan Leader has not yet responded. Move quickly.*

Dorian read the message once. Then set the phone face down on the seat.

He understood what it meant. If Alistair succeeded in turning the elders before Dorian could deliver a clear assessment, the clan would move aggressively. Whatever Dorian discovered after that point would be irrelevant. Momentum would already be set.

He had less time than expected.

The car turned onto the main road leading toward Willow Residence.

Dorian looked out the window again. His expression remained completely unchanged.

But inside, the calculation had already begun.
