Chapter 230: The Anchor Generator
Rover decided to check this place once more.
Though the footage in the memory drive had ended, the atmosphere in the wooden house hadn’t fully returned to normal. Sunako occasionally glanced at the now-dark projector, as if afraid it would suddenly light up again. Rilia stood near the window, her gaze looking out at the meadow, but the cold aura around her hadn’t fully retracted. Selina sat on the armrest of a chair, one hand propping her chin, the other still resting on her sword hilt. Elith had already released spiders everywhere and begun checking every corner of the house.
Nanoe stood beside Rover, her face still pensive.
Rover watched her for a moment but didn’t ask about what had just passed between her and the Unnamed Explorer. Now wasn’t the time. If Nanoe had chosen silence, she certainly had her reasons. With this woman, he didn’t need to press for every answer immediately.
"Check from the bottom up." Rover said.
Elith gently nodded.
The small spiders immediately dispersed through gaps, chair legs, table legs, wooden cabinets, and wall corners. A few crawled down to the kitchen area. A few others slipped into the storage room. Some crawled along the staircase downward.
Sunako watched the spiders running everywhere, her eye corners twitching slightly. "I still haven’t gotten used to this."
Elith glanced at her.
Sunako immediately cleared her throat and seriously added: "What I mean is, Great Lady Elith’s scouting skill is very useful. If it were me, I certainly couldn’t squeeze into so many small spaces."
Selina laughed softly. "You’re only good at squeezing into safe spaces."
Sunako nodded very naturally. "That’s also a kind of survival talent."
Rover paid no attention to their conversation. He walked through the living room to the kitchen, then checked the storage room behind it. This place was still clean to an unsettling degree. The wooden shelves had no dust. The floor had no footprints. Daily utensils were arranged neatly, as if someone could return to use them at any moment.
But precisely because it was so complete, it felt even less like an ordinary place.
If forty people had ever lived here, there was no way they would have left no personal trace at all.
If no one had ever lived here, then who was it prepared for?
Rover had just been thinking this when Elith suddenly spoke.
"There’s a way down here."
Everyone immediately looked toward her.
Elith stood before a small door at the end of the corridor behind the kitchen. At first it only looked like a storage cabinet door, but after a few spiders crawled through the gap below, she discovered there was more space behind it.
Rover stepped over, reached out, and pushed the door.
The door wasn’t locked.
Screech...
Behind the door was a narrow staircase leading downward.
The air inside was slightly colder, but without the smell of mildew. On both sides of the walls were very thin lines of light, seemingly engraved directly into the metal material. The light wasn’t strong, but enough for everyone to see each step.
Sunako poked her head to look down and said quietly: "I’m starting to feel like every strange house absolutely must have a basement."
Rover glanced at her.
Sunako immediately stood slightly straighter.
"I can walk last too."
"No." Rover said. "You hold the lantern and walk in the middle."
Sunako was slightly stunned, then immediately nodded.
Though she preferred hiding at the back, she also understood that Rover putting her in the middle was for safety. If there was danger from ahead, Rilia and Selina could block. If something appeared from behind, Elith and Nanoe could respond. The middle position looked weak, but was actually the most protected position.
Rover went first.
Selina walked beside him.
Rilia followed half a step back, her cold gaze sweeping down the staircase. Sunako held the lantern and walked in the middle. Nanoe and Elith brought up the rear.
The staircase wasn’t long.
After going down about twenty-plus steps, everyone entered a small basement.
This basement wasn’t as large as the hall above. It resembled more of a technical room hidden beneath the house. On all four sides were silver-gray metal walls, the surfaces bearing many faint veining patterns like energy channels. In the center of the room was a strange device.
It looked like a metal platform.
About three meters wide, three meters long, and less than half a meter tall. On the platform’s surface were many strange symbols, some resembling writing, others resembling magic arrays. Those symbols weren’t brightly lit, only occasionally flashing a few very faint points of light, like a broken machine still carrying a last breath of life.
Rover stood before the metal platform, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Sunako looked at the device, then at Nanoe. "What is this?"
Nanoe slowly circled the platform once. She didn’t casually touch it, only observed the symbols on top, then said softly: "Doesn’t look like ordinary machinery. But not completely like magic either."
Rilia frowned. "Then is it machinery or magic?"
Nanoe shook her head. "Perhaps both."
Selina crouched down beside the platform, looking at the strange veining patterns on the metal surface. "Looks damaged."
Elith also let a few spiders crawl onto the platform surface. The spiders made a few rounds but detected no danger and weren’t attacked. They only stopped at a few small cracks, then returned to Elith’s feet.
"No obvious traps." Elith said.
Rover stepped forward.
He crouched down and reached out to place his hand on the edge of the metal platform.
The moment his fingertip touched that cold surface, a familiar sound suddenly rang out in his mind.
[Ding!]
[Damaged Anchor Generator detected. To repair, requires 1,000,000 Omni Points.]
Rover was startled.
The expression on his face changed very slightly, but Nanoe still noticed.
She looked at him. "What’s wrong?"
Rover didn’t immediately answer.
He looked at the metal platform before him. A very clear sense of astonishment arose within him. He hadn’t expected his class to react with something like this. This wasn’t room 2705. Wasn’t an item within the apartment complex. Wasn’t a defense tower or equipment he was familiar with.
This was something sitting inside a strange spaceship, possibly coming from another world, another planet, or a civilization that had been destroyed.
And yet his class could still recognize it.
Had even provided a repair cost in Omni Points.
Rover opened the information panel.
A small panel appeared before him.
....
[Damaged Anchor Generator]
[Type: Special item]
[Status: Severely damaged]
[Description: After repairs are complete, the machine can create anchor points based on the memories of the person standing within its operational range.]
[Note 1: Can only create anchor points at places the person has previously passed through or personally witnessed.]
[Note 2: After an anchor point is created, Omni Points can be consumed to activate movement to the chosen anchor point.]
[Note 3: Depending on the amount of Omni Points consumed, the machine can bring an individual, a group of people, or the entire connected area to the anchor point.]
[Repair requirement: 1,000,000 Omni Points.]
....
Rover read each line of information.
Then he went silent.
An Anchor Generator.
Simply understood, this thing could create displacement coordinates based on the user’s memories. As long as someone had previously passed through or personally witnessed a location, it could create an anchor point there. Then, when needed, by consuming Omni Points, this machine could bring the user to the chosen anchor point.
Not just the user, even.
If enough Omni Points were consumed, it could also bring an entire connected area along.
In other words...
Rover looked upward.
Above this basement was the large wooden house.
Further beyond was the green meadow, the clear lake, the small river, the strange fruit trees, and the entire manor of roughly twenty hectares.
If this machine was repaired, he could bring this beautiful garden to anywhere he wanted.
As long as he had enough Omni Points.
Rover suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.
Not because this machine was too powerful.
But because it used Omni Points.
That was right.
If this thing had appeared in the apartment complex, or had been part of a reward the Endless Game had given him, Rover might not have found it too strange. After all, Omni Points had always been the key to upgrading, repairing, and renovating items he came into contact with.
But the problem was that this place didn’t resemble an ordinary reward.
This spaceship might have come from another world.
The memories in the drives just now further proved this place was connected to a civilization that had once faced an apocalypse, a space research center, astronauts, Professor Harlan, and many secrets he didn’t yet understand.
So why could a device in this place still be affected by Omni Points?
Could it be that his class wasn’t simply a class given by the Endless Game?
Could it be that the thing called Omni Points was also hiding some secret?
Rover frowned.
The more he thought, the more he felt a very large shadow lurking behind all of this. [Mirror], Professor Harlan, the Unnamed Explorer, his father, the Successor, the prison, and now a damaged Anchor Generator that could be repaired using Omni Points.
All of it made him feel as if he were standing at the edge of a deep cliff.
If he looked down for too long, he might very well be pulled in by whatever was beneath.
Rover shook his head.
No more thinking.
At least not now.
He had far too little information. Speculating too much would only drag him into a meaningless spiral. He needed resources, needed strength, needed his room, needed his people to be safe. As for secrets too large to reach right now, he would temporarily leave them lying where they were.
Nanoe was still looking at him.
She didn’t press.
But her gaze was very clear.
Rover knew if he stayed completely silent, Nanoe would certainly realize he was hiding quite a lot. Of course, she already knew he had secrets. Only Rover didn’t want this particular secret to show through too deeply.
He thought for a few seconds, then said: "I have a reaction to this thing."
Sunako blinked. "A reaction?"
Rover nodded. "My class can repair it."
Nanoe asked very quickly: "The conditions?"
"Difficult." Rover said. "Very difficult. Not the kind that can be repaired immediately. But if given more time, perhaps it’s worth trying."
He deliberately concealed the Omni Points portion.
Also concealed the figure of 1,000,000.
He only said that his class had the ability to repair this, while the specific process, specific cost, and specific principle were left unsaid.
Not that he didn’t trust them.
Only that he was afraid.
One day, if they were controlled by some existence, or had their memories forcibly read, or were pressured by some strange ability to speak the truth, his secret might very well become a blade that cut back against him.
Omni Points were his greatest secret.
That was something that couldn’t be casually revealed.
Nanoe looked at Rover for a very long time.
She seemed to recognize that he had concealed an important part. But she didn’t dig deeper. As long as Rover didn’t want to say something, she wouldn’t force him to say it in front of everyone.
"What is this thing used for?" Nanoe asked.
Rover looked at the metal platform. "An Anchor Generator. After it’s repaired, it can create anchor points based on the memories of whoever stands within its operational range. As long as it’s a place that person has previously passed through or personally witnessed, it can create a corresponding anchor point."
Sunako’s mouth fell open. "So... it can be used for displacement?"
"Yes." Rover answered. "After creating anchor points, it can bring the user there. If enough energy is consumed, it can even bring multiple people, or this entire area along with them."
The basement immediately fell quiet.
Selina looked at Rover, then looked at the metal platform. "This entire area?"
Rover nodded.
Rilia turned to look up the staircase. Her expression grew more serious. "You mean... even the manor above?"
"Possibly." Rover answered. "At least that’s what the current information says."
Sunako sucked in a breath.
"Then doesn’t that mean... Great Lord Rover could bring this entire garden along with him?"
No one laughed at her.
Because that was precisely what this machine meant.
A manor of roughly twenty hectares, with clean water, clean air, soil, fruit trees, housing, artificial light, and able to exist within a separate space. If this thing could be brought along, its value was nearly impossible to measure by ordinary resources.
Nanoe was quiet for a very long time.
She looked at the metal platform, then looked at Rover.
"If your class has the ability to repair it, then we shouldn’t leave right away."
Rover asked: "You mean stay?"
Nanoe nodded.
"Stay a few days."
Sunako immediately raised her head. "A few days?"
Nanoe said: "Yes. This place currently shows no clear signs of danger. The manor has water, air, and housing. If we leave immediately and then the entrance has problems, or someone else discovers this place before Rover finishes repairing the device, the loss will be very significant."
Rilia frowned. "What about room 2705?"
Nanoe looked at her. "We don’t all need to stay the entire time. First confirm this place is safe enough, then divide people to go back and report or transport resources. But Rover should stay here for a few days, at least to give the randomness of his class a chance to take effect."
Rover heard those two words "randomness" and inwardly smiled.
Nanoe was very smart.
She didn’t know about Omni Points, but had on her own used the most reasonable explanation to help him conceal it. Rover’s class could sometimes repair this, sometimes needed time, sometimes depended on chance. For the others, this way of explaining it was entirely acceptable.
Rover nodded. "Alright."
