Chapter 31: Bosses don’t die
Lilith looked at him in the way you looked at an utter fool. She heaved a deep sigh that showed her dissatisfaction at that very moment.
"You existed at the mind of the dungeon and did not even know your core existed?" she asked.
"Hey cut me some slack, I’m new at this whole thing, being a dungeon and all." Kael replied. "I guess I should have figured that out by myself though, it only makes sense that I have a core."
The reason I could not reach it was because I came across you when I was searching through the floors and your presence scared me," Kael said.
"Tch, you woke me up from my slumber, I have been asleep for over twenty years now," she said, evidently angry that he had awakened her.
"Jeez, who the hell sleeps that long for any reason. You guys are really lazing around."
"It can not be helped, our dungeon is located near a small town and the humans there are relatively weak, with the best of them stopping at the tenth floor or less, the deeper floors have not seen visitors in a very long time."
"Oh, I see, I guess I would sleep as well if I had nothing to do," Kael said. He looked at the walls for a bit and then he looked at Lilith. "I’m sorry I pulled those humans to come take down the fifth floor guardian boss, I was simply trying to pull more adventurers here."
She was a bit stunned that he had apologized that easily. She drew a deep breath and spoke as well. "I acted rashly by attacking them as well, I was simply irritated, and besides that, a dungeon boss is one of the few monsters in the dungeon that can not die," she said.
"Wait, what?" he asked.
"Take a look into the fifth floor boss room," she said.
"Hmm, well I can’t do that now because I am in the body of this goblin, let’s head over there together," he said and looked at her.
"Fine," she replied and pulled her sword, but before they stepped out, he seemed to recall something. He stopped and looked at her.
"Please do not try to attack and kill every human that we come across," he said.
"There will be no promises," she replied.
As they spoke, Kael noticed that she had a dragon tail at her back. It was black and glassy, even with the scales. He had not paid attention when he first looked at her.
"She did say she was dragon born, I guess that explains a lot before I even need to ask," he thought to himself and began walking.
They were currently on the third floor, and so they had to go deeper. The monsters could sense that Kael and Lilith were not people to play with and so they cleared paths and ran away when they came close. But humans tend to be different in everything, and the very moment a party of three came across them, it turned into an issue.
"Hey, there is a hobgoblin here!" the leader, a tall darker skinned dude said. He had a large sword on his back that seemed too large to be used. His hair was left in a large afro while two parts at the front were braided.
"Who is that lady beside the goblin, you think it’s her kill? If it’s hers we should leave her be," the next one said. He was a frail looking fellow with a short haircut and glasses sitting on the bridge of his nose. A wand hung from his waist, so it was easy to know he was a mage.
"No, look," the last pointed. A lady, she was dressed in black pants and a cropped blouse. Her hair was dyed red and one side of it was bobbed low. She had two gauntlets on her hands, hinting that she was a close ranged fighter. Her toned muscles attested to that as well.
They all looked and saw the tail on Lilith. They instantly knew she was not human, but then again they were stunned when they discovered that she was not human.
"She is a humanoid monster," the mage muttered, as though he was too scared to even say it out loud.
"It does not matter what she is, she is our next kill," the leader said and pulled his sword from his back and was ready to go at it.
Lilith looked at them. She heaved a sigh, but Kael immediately grabbed her hand and stopped her. He gave her a look that said "come on now, we just talked about this."
She looked at him, rolled her eyes and eased her hands from the sword.
"She is genuinely a lot," he thought as he stepped forward.
"How do I handle this lot, speak to them? Or try to scare them away? If I leave them here too long, Lilith will kill them."
Tch, how bad can you be that the first day I met you I can already tell what you are thinking, he thought and glanced at Lilith. He knew she wanted to mow them down.
"Seems the monster wants a fight, I’ll take you down first," the leader said and charged at Kael.
"Shit," Kael cursed and was about to run back, but as he watched the leader move, he realized that he could see every movement and read it almost as fast as the movements were even made. It was like he could predict where the dude would go next.
"Whoa, where did my perception get so good?" Kael wondered.
[Your consciousness is now that of an entire dungeon compressed into a single body. If you concentrated more, you could do more.]
The system decided to respond this time. Kael smiled while he read the details. He looked at the dude who was still mid attack and a confident grin tugged at his face and exposed his goblin gang-like teeth.
"This should be fun," he muttered.
