Chapter 250: 250 | The Difference Between Inheritance and Ambition

Jordan watched Chloe’s face the way a poker player watches an opponent’s hands. The slight compression of her lips. The micro-movement of her jaw as she processed information. The way her blue streak caught the warm lantern light as she tilted her head toward the courtyard garden.

"I think," Chloe said, and then stopped.

She did that sometimes. Started a sentence and then let it hover in the space between them while she assembled the rest of it behind her eyes. Chloe Kim never spoke without knowing the full shape of what she wanted to say, and Jordan had learned to wait for it rather than fill the silence with nervous chatter the way old Jordan would have.

"I think this changes things."

"Good changes or bad changes?"

"Both." Chloe’s hand found the inside of his elbow and her thumb traced a slow circle against the crook of his arm. "A business that generates seven figures annually changes the math on everything. Nova Network, our living situation, the streaming equipment, all of it. This is real capital, Jordan. Not allowance money or cashback from buying me dinner."

He knew she was right. He’d been turning over the same realization since Ayaka first showed him the quarterly reports. One point two million in annual revenue translated to roughly nine hundred thirty-six thousand after Rina’s twenty-two percent effective tax rate.

Minus staff compensation, overhead, facility maintenance, and the various costs associated with running a business that operated across multiple verticals, that left a profit margin substantial enough to fund their entire operation several times over without breaking a sweat.

They could expand Nova Network into three additional cities. They could lease a proper streaming facility with dedicated studios. They could hire full-time staff instead of relying on gig workers and freelancers who juggled their responsibilities alongside college coursework.

The numbers were obscene in a way that made Jordan’s brain perform the same glitching loop it had executed when the Cashback System first activated in his apartment. Too many zeros. Too much possibility. Too far removed from the reality of his father standing behind a convenience store register at two in the morning because the overnight clerk called in sick.

And Jordan felt absolutely nothing about them.

That was the problem. The money existed as an abstract concept rather than something tangible he could hold in his hands or measure against his own effort. He hadn’t built this business from scratch the way his father had constructed three stores through twenty years of manual labor and careful expansion. He’d just... shown up.

Applied the Cashback System’s framework to a problem that needed solving. Connected people who needed connection. The facility had materialized around him like set dressing in a play where he’d been cast as the lead without ever auditioning for the role.

"I already know what I’m doing with the money," he said. Kumiko had drifted toward the koi pond again, crouching at the stone edge and attempting to coax Mochi to the surface with the remains of a wagashi sweet that Kaori had pressed into her hands. Her twin tails dangled dangerously close to the water. "High yield savings account. Maybe split between that and some index funds. I talked to Rina about it for about thirty seconds before you got here and she had a whole diversified portfolio recommendation ready to go, which honestly was terrifying."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You want to save it."

"I want to protect it. Emergency fund. Long-term growth. Something that compounds over twenty years and turns into generational wealth for the people I care about." Jordan watched a koi the color of burnt amber drift past the stone basin’s edge. "My dad worked twelve-hour days for twenty years to build three convenience stores. My mom stood beside him the entire time. They put me through Pacific Crest on those hours and that sacrifice, and I can’t just... take this money from a facility I didn’t construct with my own hands and pretend like I earned it."

The words came out rougher than he intended. More honest than he’d planned.

Chloe’s thumb stopped its circular motion on his arm. She looked at him with that expression he’d come to recognize. The one that said she was seeing something in him that he hadn’t consciously revealed.

"You don’t want this to be your thing."

"No."

"Even though it’s yours."

"It’s mine by technicality." Jordan pulled his arm away from Chloe so he could face her properly, leaning one shoulder against the cedar column of the garden walkway. His robe shifted with the movement, exposing the hollow of his collarbone and the faint bruise Kumiko had left there sixteen hours ago. "My grandfather put this in my name because of conditions I didn’t choose. I didn’t research the location. I didn’t hire the staff. I didn’t build the client base. Ayaka and Rina and Tomoe and Kaori and Yumi did all of that. For years. Without me."

Chloe folded her arms across her chest, the gesture pulling her white cropped sweater tight across her frame in a way that Jordan’s hindbrain registered and his conscious mind firmly shelved.

"So what do you want?"

"I want to build something from nothing." The conviction behind the words surprised even Jordan. "Nova Network. That’s mine. I recruited the talent. I hired Brooke. I found the streamers. I’m going to make it work or fail on my own merit. Not because some dead relative left me a building full of beautiful women in kimonos who call me Master."

Silence pooled between them. Warm air from the mineral springs carried the faint sulfuric sweetness of the natural hot water and mixed with the cedar incense that Tomoe had lit near the garden entrance. Somewhere behind them, Kumiko made a delighted squeaking sound as Mochi apparently surfaced to accept her offering.

Chloe studied Jordan for a long time without speaking.

Then she smiled. Not the polished smile she wore for Instagram photos or the professional warmth she deployed during her Calypso streams. The small, private one that belonged only to Jordan. The one that meant she’d found something in him that she respected.

"You know what’s funny?" Chloe uncrossed her arms and stepped closer until her chest nearly touched his. She had to tilt her chin up to maintain eye contact at this distance, her five-six frame fitting beneath his jaw like the world designed her to stand exactly here. "A month ago you were a guy who spent three thousand dollars on my OnlyFans coffee date because you thought buying access to someone equaled connection."

"In my defense, I was clinically insane at the time."
