Lihua probably sensed something was wrong, so it hid far away, pricked up its ears, and began to eavesdrop on the conversation between the two.
After a long silence.
Chen Changsheng sighed deeply and said, “Ruyi, what do you think is the biggest thing between heaven and earth?”
“The biggest?” Ruyi thought for a moment. “Mountains?”
That was likely the biggest thing Ruyi had ever seen.
Chen Changsheng shook his head and said, “Why not think again.”
Ruyi paused, looked at Uncle Chen, and said, “The sky?”
Chen Changsheng said, “That can be said. Between heaven and earth, all living things follow certain rules. In the world of cultivation, it is called the Heavenly Dao. Not keeping the rules means going against the heavens, so they get disliked by the Heavenly Dao.”
Ruyi stared blankly at Uncle Chen, and some worry grew in her heart.
Chen Changsheng said, “Fighting with the heavens is what I am doing now.”
Ruyi opened her mouth; this already went beyond what she knew.
Going against the heavens, fighting with the heavens.
Such big words made Ruyi a bit slow to react.
She came back and asked, “What happens if you cannot win?”
Chen Changsheng looked at her, smiled, and said, “I will not die, just get hurt a little, so do not worry too much.”
Ruyi did not speak and shook her head.
She did not believe those words; probably Uncle Chen said that to keep her from worrying, but maybe the real result was far worse than he said or she imagined.
Chen Changsheng said, “I will be fine and safe.”
Ruyi opened her mouth and asked, “Do you have to do it?”
Chen Changsheng paused, then nodded and said, “For me, it is something I must do.”
Ruyi lowered her head and said, “I understand…”
After another long silence.
Ruyi got up and left the courtyard without asking more.
She knew this was not something she could help with.
She thought that once she knew about it, she could find a way, but the truth showed that what Uncle Chen saw and faced was worlds apart from her own.
What she could do and what Uncle Chen could do were like heaven and earth, very different.
Chen Changsheng called her back; Ruyi, who was at the door, stopped.
“Do not think too much; it is not too bad.”
After hearing this, Ruyi pressed her lips and nodded a little.
“I know, Uncle Chen. Rest early and do not work too hard.”
Then she carefully closed the door and went back into the courtyard.
Chen Changsheng sat on the bench; he breathed out and also felt a bit bad in his heart.
At that moment, he felt just a little regret. Perhaps he should not have told Ruyi about these things, causing needless worry.
Chen Changsheng lying on the bench was very calm.
But in fact, the calmer he became, the more he felt unsure and restless inside. It was like a voice telling him to move forward and not worry about it.
Something he had to do. He had to go.
After a long silence, a wind blew into the courtyard, making the leaves rustle.
Lihua, lying on the Great Wall, looked at Chen Changsheng.
It seemed Good Human Chen was a bit less happy than yesterday.
Lihua thought human feelings were very tricky; at least it could not do that, and it kind of admired him without knowing why.
What it thought about were simple things without reasons.
But Chen Changsheng had to know why they were real.
He had his own reasons.
In many ways, Chen Changsheng was not as good as Lihua. At least, Lihua did not need to think about much, and it filled some part of Chen Changsheng’s lonely days that he could not.
“It is time,” he thought to himself.
Even if it meant going against the heavens, he still had to do it.
It was just a matter of early or late.
Not before tonight; not after tomorrow.
…
At night.
Chen Changsheng slept well.
This might have been the best sleep in his later years.
“I have to leave now.”
Lihua, lying on the walltop, opened its eyes.
“Is Good Human Chen talking to Lihua?”
“Yes,” Chen Changsheng said. “I have rested for long enough.”
Or perhaps, he did not want to wait anymore.
Lihua jumped down from the walltop to Chen Changsheng, then spoke: “Can we play for two more days? Lihua does not want to leave yet…”
Chen Changsheng asked, “Does Lihua like it here a lot?”
Lihua nodded and said, “Ruyi will buy me Candied Hawthorn; it is tasty…”
Its mind had always been simple.
Chen Changsheng asked, “And what about Mo Yu?”
Lihua paused; thinking of Mo Yu, it also wanted to return.
It hesitated for a long time, then said carefully: “Just, just one or two days? It will not take too long.”
“Is it okay?”
Lihua stared at Chen Changsheng; it had always been very obedient, and now it was too, because before leaving, someone told it to listen to Good Human Chen, and it remembered.
Chen Changsheng said, “Of course it is okay, but I might not be able to stay with Lihua.”
“Where are you going?”
“To find trouble.”
“Ah?”
Lihua blinked its eyes; it did not quite understand.
Chen Changsheng squatted down and rubbed its back. He said, “I have to do some things and cannot take Lihua. Lihua, when you have played enough, you can go to the Dragon King Temple to find the Dragon Lord. The Dragon Lord will take you back. I will tell him ahead.”
Lihua blinked and said, “But Mo Yu told me to follow Good Human Chen.”
“What about next time I come back?”
“Again, next time.”
Lihua did not believe Chen Changsheng’s next time promise anymore.
Chen Changsheng smiled and said, “I missed it before because of something.”
Lihua turned away and said, “Good Human Chen is not as on time as Lihua.”
“Yes,” Chen Changsheng nodded. “I am the worst at keeping time, often miss many people, and I even missed Lihua before.”
“Mhm.”
Lihua said no more.
It did not want to leave Ruyi in Qingshan City, or Good Human Chen, or Mo Yu.
Among those three, it found picking hard.
Chen Changsheng said, “I have many friends in the Mortal World. Lihua, if you want to stay in the Mortal World, my old friends will protect you. If you wish to go back to Cloudtop Manor, I can travel extra to take you there. See what you choose.”
“Lihua does not know.”
“Then what should we do about it?” Chen Changsheng said.
Lihua was very upset.
It wanted to miss none of them.
But in the world, no way exists that can please everyone at once and solve everything.
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and said, “How about guess odd or even?”
Lihua asked, “How to guess?”
Chen Changsheng pointed to a little flower grown in the courtyard and said, “Count the petals. If odd, stay in the Mortal World. If even, go to Cloudtop Manor. What do you think?”
Lihua heard this and said, “Then, th-th…”
“Then let us do what Good Human Chen says.”
Chen Changsheng raised his hand; the flower fell onto his palm, then he began to count.
“One, two, three…”
Lihua’s eyes fixed on the petals.
He counted to the last one.
There were eleven petals in all.
So it would stay in the Mortal World.
