Chapter 261: Chapter 163: He’s My Childhood Sweetheart, Sis
Shen Yuan held Li Zhi’s hand as they walked slowly along the residential community’s path.
The shadow of their clasped hands flickered in the light of the ground lamps.
The boy’s deliberately slowed pace made the sound of crushing leaves soft and drawn out. The folds of the girl’s wide-legged white cotton pants swayed with her gait, each step measuring the distance back home.
As Shen Yuan’s thumb caressed her hand, his palm applied a gentle pressure, holding Li Zhi’s hand firmly within his own.
It was like an invisible chain, binding the starry night of their eighteenth year within the space between their intertwined fingers.
In the fig-scented night, the silhouette of their interlocked fingers stretched and shrank.
The veins on the back of Shen Yuan’s hand were faintly visible in the shadows, fitting perfectly against the delicate curve of the girl’s knuckles.
Gazing at the faint light from her apartment building at the end of the path, Shen Yuan spoke.
"We’re almost there."
As soon as he said it, Shen Yuan felt Li Zhi give his hand a gentle squeeze.
Shen Yuan stopped and turned to look at Li Zhi.
"What’s wrong?"
She looked at Shen Yuan and asked hesitantly, "Did you really tell them we were holding hands?"
"Uh, even if I didn’t, the way we were on the path just now... someone probably already took a picture and sent it to their group chat."
Hearing this, Li Zhi immediately raised her hand and gave his arm a hard smack.
"You jerk, Shen Yuan! You did that on purpose, didn’t you! First you trick me by saying you told them we were holding hands, and now you have the nerve to say this to me! What are you trying to do?"
"No, I really did tell them! I was just telling Yang Ze and the others that we were holding hands. If you don’t believe me, ask He Zhiyu. She definitely knows by now."
Looking at Shen Yuan’s earnest, oath-swearing expression, Li Zhi pursed her lips.
"For real, I can’t believe I fell for your nonsense."
Shen Yuan chuckled and comforted her, "Hey, it’s fine. We’re still holding hands right now anyway."
"You want me to start screaming for help?"
"That won’t be necessary."
Li Zhi glared at Shen Yuan and let out a short, cold huff from her nose.
But soon, they both fell silent.
After a moment of silence, Li Zhi said, "We should get going."
Just then, as if remembering something, Shen Yuan spoke up. "Oh, right. We have to take the two little ones to get fixed next month. They’re big enough now."
When Li Zhi heard this, her expression instantly grew solemn. Her smooth brow furrowed, revealing a clear look of worry.
"I heard that getting them fixed could..."
Before Li Zhi could finish, she felt Shen Yuan’s hand tighten around hers, his grip tense.
Shen Yuan quickly cut her off. "Don’t overthink it. The surgical techniques are very mature now. As long as we find a reliable vet, it’ll be fine. If we can’t find one in Jiyang, we’ll go to Hang City. There are definitely better doctors there."
Li Zhi looked at Shen Yuan, the worry in her eyes not completely gone, but she still nodded lightly, agreeing to his suggestion.
Seeing this, Shen Yuan smiled and reassured her, "Don’t worry, it’ll be okay. Getting them fixed is also a health measure for them. It can prevent certain diseases."
Shen Yuan knew this because he had checked the System. The two kittens would be with them for at least ten years, which meant the procedure wouldn’t cause any problems.
Despite Shen Yuan’s words, the worry clouding Li Zhi’s features didn’t dissipate.
The girl’s lips parted slightly, unconsciously, but then pressed into a thin line just as a sigh was about to escape, causing the corners of her mouth to droop almost imperceptibly.
"What’s wrong?" Shen Yuan asked.
Li Zhi tilted her head up to look at Shen Yuan. "I just feel bad for them."
"It’ll be okay. Trust me."
Shen Yuan continued, "Let’s go during the next long break, then. If we go to Hang City, we’ll see whether my dad or your dad has time."
Li Zhi nodded and hummed softly in agreement.
After talking about getting the kittens fixed, they fell silent again.
Shen Yuan scratched his head and muttered to himself, "Ah, I really should get home now. Otherwise, my family’s definitely going to call and rush me."
Seeing this, Li Zhi, who was standing beside him, couldn’t help but chuckle. She then nodded. "Then let’s go."
After they walked into the building together, Shen Yuan suddenly felt a faint tug on his hand. But the force was fleeting, gone as if it had never been there.
Shen Yuan looked at Li Zhi, a little confused, and asked, "What’s up? Did you just pull my hand?"
Li Zhi bit her lip, hesitated for a moment, and finally said, "I figure, even if I told you to let go of my hand right now, you definitely wouldn’t."
"But if you were to say ’wait,’ I’d stop."
As soon as Shen Yuan finished speaking, he saw a wave of confusion in Li Zhi’s gaze.
Li Zhi blinked, seemingly thinking about something. After a moment, she said slowly, "I seriously suspect you’re making a dirty joke, but I have no evidence."
"Well, then I wasn’t making one."
Shen Yuan grinned and pressed the elevator button.
"Alright, hurry on home. Take a nice shower, lie down in your comfy bed, and have a good night’s sleep. And if you really miss me, you can just video call me."
Hearing this, Li Zhi couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She said peevishly, "In your dreams! I’m not going to miss you!"
"That’s okay," Shen Yuan said with a brilliant smile. "I’ll miss you, and I’ll be the one to video call you."
At his words, Li Zhi whipped her head away. "Hmph! We’ll just see if I pick up!"
