Chapter 219: Chapter 151: The Mighty Man and the Monk
"Brother Zheng!"
"Brother Zheng!"
"Brother!"
He called out several times, but the Mighty Man on his back gave no response. His body was rigid as he lay on Ruchen’s back, as if in a deep sleep, but his breathing was faint and his face deathly pale.
Ruchen started to lower Zheng Xiu to check his injuries.
But a moment later, Ruchen froze.
As he was being lowered, the unconscious Zheng Xiu’s hand shot out and seized the scroll on Ruchen’s back in a death grip.
No matter how hard Ruchen pulled, he couldn’t separate Zheng Xiu’s hand from the scroll.
"If the scroll survives, I survive... If the scroll survives, I survive."
Ruchen muttered, repeating the parting words Zheng Xiu had entrusted to him.
He believed something must have happened to Zheng Xiu.
And he believed even more strongly that the senior who called himself "Zheng Baimei" wouldn’t have appeared for no reason, and certainly wouldn’t have sacrificed himself for no reason.
Ruchen might have lost his memory, but he wasn’t an idiot.
"Brother Zheng, I will not fail the trust you’ve placed in me."
In an instant, the panic on Ruchen’s face vanished, replaced by resolve and determination.
Jingtang Town had long since been reduced to a ruin in the battle between Zheng Xiu and the Crow Fosterer.
Deep ravines cut the town into different sections.
Houses had collapsed, and the stone slabs of the streets were torn up.
Amidst the devastated town, Ruchen found some tattered clothes, tore them into strips, and used them to securely bind Zheng Xiu to his body.
The scroll was wedged between Zheng Xiu and Ruchen.
The town’s residents had already fled.
Carrying Zheng Xiu on his back, Ruchen moved cautiously through the town.
By the faint moonlight, near the crumbling walls that were once the Purifying Witch Family’s estate, Ruchen found two bundles.
Inside the bundles were winter clothes, dry rations, and utensils, all in relatively good condition.
After a bit of simple packing, Ruchen clumsily draped a padded jacket over Zheng Xiu’s back.
Zheng Xiu was clinging so tightly, plastered to Ruchen’s back, that he couldn’t be pried off, which made the act of draping the padded jacket over him exceptionally difficult.
Fortunately, Ruchen wasn’t an ordinary person. He managed to drape the padded jacket over Zheng Xiu for warmth, wrapping him up until only his nose was exposed.
He then struggled to repack the two bundles into one and tied it to his front.
Having done all this, Ruchen was panting heavily.
As night fell, the temperature on the plateau plummeted, and Ruchen’s breaths condensed into a plume of white vapor.
"HUFF... HUFF... HUFF... I can definitely do this, because this is what Brother Zheng entrusted to me."
’The Crow Fosterer was killed by that... that old senior who looked like Brother Zheng, but couldn’t possibly have been him.’
Ruchen’s thoughts were now exceptionally clear. Having sorted out the relationship between Brother Zheng and the old senior, he muttered to himself. When he looked up, his gaze inadvertently fell upon the snow-capped Celestial Yin Mountain in the dark of night.
The peaks and waist of Celestial Yin Mountain were shrouded in clouds year-round. From Ruchen’s perspective, the summit was completely invisible.
He didn’t know how high the mountain was.
Or how cold it was on its slopes.
Or how treacherous its paths were.
Ruchen had only one thought now: there were no people on the mountain, no Ravens, nothing at all.
It was a... forbidden zone, a place ordinary people could not set foot in.
Ruchen rubbed his head.
’A forbidden zone?’
’A forbidden zone is perfect.’
Ruchen’s line of thinking was very simple at the moment.
If a forbidden zone was a place ordinary people couldn’t enter...
...then Ye Weiyang couldn’t get in either.
...and the Ravens couldn’t fly up there.
"That’s perfect!"
Ruchen grinned. With the bundle tied to his front and Zheng Xiu and the scroll on his back, he started walking, step by step, toward Celestial Yin Mountain.
With every step, the heavy burden forced his knees to bend, making a sharp cracking sound, but Ruchen still had a smile on his face. He would quickly straighten his leg and take the next step.
One step, two steps, three steps, four steps...
The moonlight was faint, and a mist began to rise.
The silhouette of Ruchen carrying Zheng Xiu looked somewhat bulky.
He looked like a lone hero, courageously marching to his death.
And yet also like... an Ascetic Monk.
It took Ruchen four hours to finally reach the foot of the mountain.
Perhaps someone in ancient times had tried to climb Celestial Yin Mountain, because Ruchen soon discovered a steep, winding path leading upward.
In truth, it could hardly be called a path. A glance showed it was covered in sharp stones. It was only a "path" in that, compared to the smooth rock faces, it was... walkable.
Ruchen shifted the "heavy load" on his back, made sure it was tied securely, and started up without looking back.
As he walked, Ruchen’s expression changed, and he began to talk to himself.
"Idiot!"
"This bald guy must be missing a few screws! There was a perfectly good way to live, but he just had to go looking for death!"
"You’re still cursing!"
"Was I cursing you?"
"He’s a bald guy, aren’t we?"
"Good point!"
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!"
Somehow, Ruchen had started to hear the conversation of his Heart Demon.
But he just found it irritatingly loud.
Before long, it started to snow. If anyone were watching from a distance, they would have seen a large "lump of snow" slowly inching its way up Celestial Yin Mountain.
「The third day.」
Ruchen was still climbing.
He stubbornly believed that since he was still able to climb up here, the place wasn’t forbidden enough.
If it wasn’t forbidden enough, then Ye Weiyang’s people could catch up.
「By the night of the fourth day.」
The winding path had disappeared. It seemed the people of old could only climb this far.
Ruchen looked back and down, and instantly sucked in a breath of cold air, which hurt his frozen lungs. Chunks of ice clinging to his eyebrows broke off and fell onto his body.
Looking down, Jingtang Town, destroyed by the Mighty Man and the Crow Fosterer, was barely discernible as a palm-sized silhouette.
Within the palm-sized Jingtang Town, tiny, bright dots flickered faintly. They were torchlights.
The lights flickered and moved back and forth inside the "palm," as if searching for something.
"Heh!" Seeing this, Ruchen chuckled. His chapped lips split open, and the hot blood that seeped out was instantly frozen into red ice crystals. But Ruchen was completely oblivious to the pain, smiling as he said, "Fools. You can’t find me, can you?"
