Chapter 214: Chapter 177: Jin Xueli’s Illusion Report That’s Always Thinking About the Same Person
His eyelids fluttered, as if fighting some deep temptation. After a few attempts, they finally, slowly, opened.
Jin Xueli hadn’t known Chaisi for long, but she would bet that before tonight, few people in the world had ever seen him with this kind of expression—it was a light, boyish bewilderment and confusion, as if the identity of "Chaisi Monroe" hadn’t yet caught up to him, hadn’t yet settled on his shoulders.
’For a brief moment, she suddenly wondered, if Chaisi had never joined the Kai Family, what kind of person would he be now?’
’Perhaps no one would ever know the answer, not even Chaisi himself.’
Because of where they were standing, the first person Chaisi saw was Jin Xueli.
"Hey," Jin Xueli said, giving him a small wave.
Just as a look of incredible surprise appeared on Chaisi’s face, "Han Liuyue" leaned her head over. "You’re finally awake?"
The moment he saw her clearly, Chaisi recoiled as if shocked, his head hitting the wall with a THUD.
Morando couldn’t hold it in and let out a snort.
That sputtering, failed attempt to suppress a laugh made Chaisi immediately shoot a glance her way. He propped himself up with one hand, trying to get up, but he was too shaky and weak to muster the strength.
"Wh-what’s going on?"
He ended up just leaning against the wall, barely able to sit up. His gaze darted around before his hand reached behind him to his lower back, likely searching for a weapon. He’d been in two different hospitals; of course there wouldn’t be a weapon on him. His hand found nothing.
"Don’t worry, no one’s trying to kill you for now," Jin Xueli reassured him. "Right, Morando?"
Morando looked away without a word, as if she wasn’t happy about it.
"I don’t understand this situation," Chaisi said in a low voice.
’He’s not the only one,’ Jin Xueli thought. ’I’ve been awake this whole time, and I can’t say I completely understand it either.’
But she had to make sure Chaisi understood the most crucial point, just as she did.
"I saved your life," she said solemnly. "We can talk about the details and how you’re going to repay me later."
Chaisi blinked in confusion.
Jin Xueli glanced at Morando and made a prompting gesture.
"It’s true," Morando said with a sigh. "Without her tonight, you wouldn’t have survived."
"That much is a fact," the Noh-masked Han Liuyue added.
"I don’t know any of these people, but if Morando says so, then it must be true," the Hunter of Love chimed in.
"Alright, I get it. You only had to say it once."
As his senses and memories returned, Chaisi gradually reverted to his usual self—no matter who he faced, it seemed he was always watching from the depths of his eyes, suspicious, sniffing for weakness, searching for an opening to strike.
He seemed to realize "Han Liuyue" had no intention of making a move and slowly asked, "...What about the two guys who were guarding you?"
"Han Liuyue" pointed to the missing pieces on her own face, then to the silent hospital staff nearby.
"Just as expected of Brother Chaisi, worrying about members of the Family Faction first thing. Don’t worry. When I left the Kai Family headquarters, I pulled the pieces of my face off of theirs. They’ve definitely suffered severe mental trauma, but their lives shouldn’t be in danger."
Chaisi’s gaze shifted back and forth a couple of times, and he seemed to understand her relationship with the hospital employees.
"I fell from the building, so I should have been taken to the emergency room... but this doesn’t look like a normal hospital." He stared at Morando. "Why are you here?"
"You wouldn’t believe me if I said I came to visit the sick, would you, senior?" Morando said with a light laugh as she stood up.
She was a complete mess: not only was her face pale and her body covered in scrapes and dirt, but the places where faces had once grown now left large holes in her clothes. She looked no different from a homeless person.
"You came to kill me? And Jin Xueli saved me from you?" Chaisi asked in a low voice, leaning against the wall. "How did you know..."
"In this day and age, a video of someone with a goat’s head falling off a building can go viral in minutes. Especially when the person who uploaded it swore that what he saw with his own eyes wasn’t a goat’s head."
Morando handed the hammer back to Jin Xueli, dusted herself off, and said with a smile, "Senior, I’m not entirely disappointed that you survived. There’ll always be a next time to assassinate you. We’ll meet again. Oh, and if I were you, I’d crawl out of this hospital as soon as possible, even if I couldn’t walk."
If this were the Chaisi of old, he definitely wouldn’t have let her just turn and walk away so easily. But now, even the slightest movement made his face turn pale. He was completely powerless against Morando.
Just as Morando and the Hunter of Love had taken a few steps away, Chaisi suddenly asked, "Who is Brianna?"
Morando stopped dead in her tracks.
She stood motionless for a few seconds, then turned her head. Her eyes were like a frozen polar sea under a blue sky.
For some reason, she glanced at Jin Xueli first.
Then, Morando slowly said, "...Brianna died a long time ago."
Chaisi sneered. "Impossible."
"No, I’m not lying to you."
Morando lowered her eyes. "Brianna is no longer in this world. If she were still alive... I wouldn’t be here, right now, trying to assassinate you."
"Huh?" Jin Xueli was confused. "Are you trying to kill him because it was Brianna’s dying wish?"
But Morando didn’t answer her.
As if she hadn’t heard a thing, she didn’t spare Jin Xueli another glance and walked away. The Hunter of Love followed behind her, looking back warily several times, as if worried someone would launch a sneak attack from behind.
"Aren’t you leaving?"
"Han Liuyue" suddenly looked at Jin Xueli. "He’s awake now. I don’t need you anymore. The smart thing to do would be to leave now, just like the blue-eyed girl."
"If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I would have let Vulture make a backup of you back then," Jin Xueli said, pointing at her angrily before turning to Chaisi. "She says she’s Han Liuyue!"
Chaisi glanced at "Han Liuyue" and said, "...She is."
Jin Xueli felt as if someone had stuffed a fist in her mouth.
"I really am Han Liuyue."
The snow-white face, missing five pieces, said flatly, "But I can also not be."
Before Jin Xueli could react, Chaisi’s head snapped up. "What do you mean?"
"Exactly what I said. I told you before, I need you to take me to a friend. After I see that friend, I will become him, and I will no longer be Han Liuyue."
Jin Xueli blinked, trying to understand. "Then... what about Han Liuyue?"
"Han Liuyue will still be in this world then."
The Noh mask under the straw hat said in a matter-of-fact tone.
"My first question is... are you saying you haven’t completely ’assimilated’ Han Liuyue?" Chaisi was still weak; just sitting up straight to ask this one question left him slightly breathless.
"Han Liuyue" sighed, as if Chaisi were an idiot.
"I told you, I am Han Liuyue. But I can also not be."
"I know—"
"Right now, I have not made my final decision on who I should become. Only after I see that friend can I make the final decision."
Chaisi slowly nodded.
"My second question is, who is the person you want to see?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Jin Xueli suddenly heard her phone BUZZ in her bag. She pulled it out and looked up, her eyes meeting Chaisi’s.
"...Is it the Nest?" he asked in a low voice.
Jin Xueli nodded.
The two would only find out later that at the exact moment she received the message, in another hospital in Blackmoor City, a phone inside a cardboard box of lost items also received the same message. The screen lit up, illuminating Chaisi’s photo on a driver’s license next to it.
