Chapter 402: Chapter 402: Illusion
"We’re not monsters!"
Qiao Xixi saw that the one chasing them was actually Kunlin.
Kunlin paid them no heed. He spread his massive wings, and his feathers transformed into a rain of arrows, shooting swiftly toward the beast-men.
"Ah!"
The beast-men couldn’t dodge in time. Their bodies were riddled with arrows before they crashed to the ground.
Kunlin walked over and reached into their bodies to search, but he found no black beast crystals at all.
His expression flickered. These were actually real beast-men.
"Die, you little monster!"
After Feiyan’s fireballs incinerated the monsters, Xijing’s fins shot out, slicing open their stomachs to retrieve the black beast crystals.
Hearing the commotion, Kunlin finally noticed the battle over here. As he approached, he immediately spotted Qiao Xixi sitting on Jin Ling.
"Qiao Xixi, I’ve finally found you all."
Qiao Xixi had already noticed him, but many large trees had blocked Kunlin’s line of sight, so he hadn’t seen them at first.
Just as Kunlin was about to approach, Feiyan launched a fireball at him.
A hostile glint flashed in Kunlin’s cold eyes. As the reflection of the flames grew brighter in his pupils, he flapped his wings, swatting the fireball away onto the corpse of a slain monster.
"Feiyan, what are you doing?"
Feiyan raised a hand, wiped the blood from the corner of his eye, and said to Qiao Xixi and the others, "That’s Kunlin."
He had thrown the fireball to test Kunlin’s identity. The Beast Guards had said that a monster’s pupils would turn green when faced with fire, but Kunlin’s pupils hadn’t changed.
Realizing Feiyan hadn’t meant to attack him, Kunlin walked up to Qiao Xixi.
Qiao Xixi looked at him and asked, "Kunlin, where did you go? You disappeared in the blink of an eye."
Kunlin frowned. "While we were flying, we saw a white mist suddenly rise up from below. When we tried to get closer, Bee Beasts flew out and attacked us. After we dealt with them, you were gone. The City Lord headed in this direction to find you."
After speaking, Kunlin flapped his wings and shot into the sky, letting out a long cry. He was likely calling for Huang Yue and the others.
By the time he returned to the forest, Feiyan and the others had finished digging out all the monsters’ beast crystals.
Feiyan carefully wiped the blood off the beast crystals with a piece of animal hide before stowing the clean crystals in the leather pouch he carried.
"Did you notice anything unusual while you were flying up there?"
Kunlin’s lips tightened into a cold line. "Yes. Once we reached a certain altitude, we saw a white mist rise from the forest, completely obscuring it."
Jin Ling frowned. "So you mean it’s hard for you to navigate even from the sky?"
Kunlin nodded. "That’s right. Looking into the distance, all we can see is an expanse of forest. If we descend, the white mist blocks our view."
’I never thought the Thunder-swallowing Forest would be this strange,’ Qiao Xixi thought. ’I was hoping that if Huang Yue and the others could navigate while flying, I could ask them to take us near the Watchtower.’
’Looks like that plan is out.’
Qiao Xixi glanced at the beast-men lying in pools of their own blood and asked doubtfully, "I saw you chasing those beast-men just now. What was that about?"
Kunlin said, "I couldn’t find you from the sky, so I picked a direction and landed in the forest. The moment I landed, those beast-men attacked me."
’But from the way those beast-men looked, it didn’t seem like they were possessed by monsters.’
After Sunxiao confirmed all the monsters’ beast crystals had been harvested, he turned to Qiao Xixi and said, "Let’s leave this place first."
Qiao Xixi nodded.
’We haven’t been in here for long, but so many beast-men have already died.’
"No wonder everyone in Beast King City told us to leave immediately after the ritual ended."
If all the males in Beast King City have to come to this godforsaken place to train after their Awakened Beast Soul, then very few of them must make it out alive.
They walked a while longer, and the surrounding sounds suddenly grew noisy.
From time to time, the sounds of roars and fighting could be heard, along with the sounds of talking and walking.
It gave Qiao Xixi the illusion that she had suddenly returned to a normal forest.
"Did you see that Deer Beast just now?"
"What? You ran into a monster?"
"What monster? It was just a plump and healthy Deer Beast. I almost caught it, but that bunch of brats charged over and scared it off."
Qiao Xixi glanced to her left and saw a group of beast-men chatting as they walked. Their expressions were relaxed and carefree; they didn’t look like they were fighting monsters at all.
"It’s so sunny in this forest. The trees are so dense, so why is the sun still making me so uncomfortable?"
"I know, right? I’m dying of heat. I can’t stand it. Let’s find some water. The sun’s made me so thirsty I could die."
Surprised, Qiao Xixi glanced to her right. On the other side of the forest, the light was blinding, a stark contrast to their own dark and cold surroundings. Many beast-men there were dripping with sweat from the heat.
Qiao Xixi blinked hard. ’I must be hallucinating,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, how could three completely different scenes exist within such a short distance in the same forest?’
But no matter how many times she blinked, looking left and right, she saw the same scenes as before.
’Could it be real?’
"Xixi, what are you looking at?"
Feiyan’s voice came from behind her. Just as Qiao Xixi was about to turn, a shrill scream exploded in her mind from the little sprite.
’Nooo, Host, whatever you do, don’t turn around!’
A blinding white light suddenly appeared before Qiao Xixi, so bright she could barely open her eyes.
Qiao Xixi quickly shut her eyes, took out a Bubble Fruit, and clutched it in her hand.
"Xixi, Xixi, what’s wrong?"
Behind her, Feiyan’s voice grew more urgent. Suddenly, a hand landed on her shoulder.
"Xixi, say something! There’s a monster, get back! Ah!"
Feiyan’s agonized scream rang out. Qiao Xixi’s eyes flew open. The sound was terrifyingly real, but the white light before her was too blinding for her to see what was happening.
The sounds of a fierce battle filled her ears.
"Feiyan, are you okay? Look out!" Xijing’s alarmed cry suddenly rang out.
It was followed by an even more terrible cry of pain from Feiyan.
"AHH!"
"Jin Ling, get Xixi out of here!"
Qiao Xixi clenched her fists. Just as she desperately fought the urge to turn around, a faint blue halo crashed into the white light before her.
The white light was repelled by the faint blue halo.
CRACK!
The halo shattered instantly like a mirror.
Qiao Xixi opened her eyes, staring in astonishment at Xijing, who was looking at her with concern.
"Xixi, how are you?"
Qiao Xixi wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. Her face was a little pale as she shook her head. "I’m fine. What about Feiyan? Is he okay?"
Xijing shook his head. "He’s fine. He’s been following behind us the whole time. If you don’t believe me, turn around and look."
