“One in ten million?”

Pandora chewed on the number. “So... one ton?”

Yeah, that sounds really “easy”! Suddenly ten million times “easier”...

Yeah, right!

Finding places to plant an entire ton of seeds, plus cultivating, tending, and waiting for them to bloom? What kind of joke was this?! This was absolutely not a simple task either!!!

Pandora fell entirely silent. How could she put this feeling... It was like someone telling you they just wanted you to take a tiny sip of water. And then you find out that “tiny sip” is the entire Pacific Ocean.

“But then again...” It took a good while before Pandora spoke up once more. “Isn’t my job to sow, cultivate, and harvest? Why does luck have anything to do with this?”

Pandora voiced her doubts. Since Amanda had specifically brought up “luck,” it couldn’t just be a passing remark. There had to be a key point she hadn’t made clear yet.

Amanda smiled, a profoundly meaningful expression on her face. “Of course it has to do with luck. What tier of item do you think someone of my Rank would need?”

Pandora thought about it. “...At least Rank-4, the level of a full-fledged Demon Hunter. Probably Rank-4 isn’t even enough. Rank-5, or even Rank-6, isn’t out of the question.”

“Exactly.” Amanda nodded in confirmation. “At least Rank-4. Considering your limited capabilities, I won’t set my demands too high, so we’ll set the target at Rank-4 materials.”

“As for how to cultivate extraordinary materials of that tier...” Amanda held up two slender fingers. “There are generally two ways.”

“The first: use materials of the same tier. For example, incredibly precious and rare soil. Rank-4 growth-boosting potions at the bare minimum. A specially customized environment, which also requires burning through corresponding resources.”

She pointed overhead at the warm, golden-fruit-like light source hanging high above, then casually gestured at the bizarre underground garden surrounding them.

Among those softly glowing, bizarrely shaped plants, quite a few faintly exuded a distinct, oppressive aura. Here, they looked perfectly ordinary, like pretty decorations in a garden. Yet, Pandora knew very well that any single one of these plants, if placed in the outside world, would likely be a precious, rare extraordinary material valuable enough to spark a bloodbath.

Even the soil they took root in, that seemingly ordinary flesh-pink moss, was anything but ordinary. And that golden light source flowing like honey overhead was certainly no ordinary sunlight or artificial illumination.

Without exception, to directly cultivate Rank-4 or higher extraordinary materials, one needed to pile up and transmute massive amounts of same-tier, or even higher-tier resources. But these resources couldn’t just materialize out of thin air. Therefore, for the vast majority of people, especially an Apprentice like Pandora, this path was practically a dead end.

Pandora quietly pondered, quickly grasping the limitations of the first method. “Then... what’s the second?” she asked.

A glint flashed through Amanda’s violet eyes. “The second is to brute-force it with sheer quantity. Use mundane objects as the foundation, the soil, the massive numerical base. While ensuring the absolute baseline sliver of possibility, you stack the quantity to an appropriate degree. When the numbers reach a certain magnitude, a qualitative shift—or rather, the extraordinary—will naturally emerge from that astronomical base.”

Her words seemed to carry a strange, rhythmic cadence. “This is exactly why I’m having you cultivate these seeds in massive quantities. Without resources at the full-fledged Demon Hunter level, the only way to obtain rare materials of this tier is to rely on a colossal volume to snatch that one-in-ten-million, or even slimmer, infinitesimal chance. And that’s assuming the seeds I’ve given you inherently possess this ‘possibility’ to begin with.”

Amanda smiled, her gaze deep and distant. “Sometimes, we describe this principle as the ‘Law of Extraordinary Possibility.’ There are others who call it the ‘Law of the Extraordinary Catalyst.’ But regardless of the name, whenever you read related records, books, or secret histories in the future, you should understand that these laws, rules, and regulations are all describing the exact same thing—”

She paused, articulating every word: “The extraordinary arises from the mundane.”

Pandora listened in silence, enlightenment washing over her. This knowledge—regarding the acquisition of high-tier materials and the fundamental laws of the extraordinary—clearly exceeded what an Apprentice-level individual should be exposed to. But precisely because of that, it massively expanded the boundaries of her understanding, making her realize that the operating rules of this world were far grander, and far more interesting, than she had ever imagined.

“But...” After a moment of silence, Pandora’s mind pulled away from the grandiose “Law of the Extraordinary Catalyst” and snapped back to a more concrete issue. “What about the ones that fail to grasp that sliver of ‘possibility’?”

If, out of tens of thousands of successfully bloomed flowers, one might undergo a leap in its life Rank, becoming a precious material that even a Rank-6 powerhouse like Amanda would specifically value... then what about the ordinary flowers? What would become of those mundane seeds in that astronomical base that failed to seize that infinitesimal chance?

The air abruptly stagnated. The eerie silence of the garden seemed to grow even heavier at this moment.

“Discard them.” Amanda answered crisply, her voice calm and indifferent. “They are mundane, and therefore... worthless.”

Snip—

It was as if an invisible pair of scissors had sheared something off in the air.

Pandora suddenly thought of many things. The cold, ruthless style of the Demon Hunter Academy. The massive number of rookies who lost their fragile lives during the Orchard phase before even officially entering the Academy, all culled by the catastrophe’s selection. During the subsequent cultivation phases, even more Apprentices would continuously die—either from a lack of resources, mission failures, or from the far crueler... internal competition. Those who finally became true Demon Hunters were the extreme minority.

And this, in a sense, wasn’t it also a manifestation of the “Law of the Extraordinary Catalyst”?

Only by breaking through to become extraordinary was one’s existence acknowledged by the Academy, accepted by this brutal system. Otherwise... they were nothing but worthless mundane dust. Dust that didn’t even qualify to be used as cannon fodder.

Pandora didn’t speak, but her eyes said it all. Amanda seemed to see right through her thoughts.

“Yes.” Her voice rang out again, shattering the brief silence.
