Chapter 313: 313:Wedding.
The morning sun rose over the High Elven capital beneath a cloudless sky. Spring had only arrived, yet it had already transformed the kingdom.
The forests surrounding the capital shimmered with fresh shades of emerald, while thousands of blossoms covered the branches of the towering mana trees that lined the city’s streets.
Gentle petals drifted through the breeze, occasionally carried high above the rooftops before floating back toward the bustling avenues below. For the first time since winter’s arrival months ago, every fountain within the capital flowed freely once again.
The city was alive.
People filled the streets long before sunrise, eager to witness an occasion that many believed would be remembered for generations.
The engagement of the High Elven Princess.
It was more than a celebration between two noble houses, it symbolized stability and renewal. A future that no longer seemed overshadowed by war, rebellions, or the growing threat of the Corrupted.
Throughout the capital, banners bearing the World Tree fluttered beside the standards of visiting nations. Dark Elf black and silver, the crimson flame of the Demonic Continent, the mountain crest of the Dwarves, the golden lion of the Human Kingdoms, the emerald leaves of the Wood Elves, and the beast emblem carried proudly by the Beastkin.
Every major race had answered the invitation. For one day, the continent stood together.
Inside the royal palace, preparations had begun hours before dawn.
Servants hurried through polished corridors carrying fresh flowers gathered from the royal gardens while musicians quietly tuned ancient instruments that would accompany the ceremony.
Royal chefs worked tirelessly beneath the kitchens, knights performed one final inspection of ceremonial armor while priests walked the palace halls offering blessings for peace and prosperity.
The atmosphere carried excitement rather than anxiety. Everything had been planned months in advance and every detail had been refined countless times. Nothing had been left to chance.
Atheline adjusted the formal cloak resting across his shoulders before looking at himself in the polished mirror.
The ceremonial attire of the Dark Elven King differed greatly from what he had worn during his own coronation; instead of heavy ceremonial armor, today’s garments emphasized diplomacy.
Black robes embroidered with flowing silver patterns reached almost to the floor, while a lighter royal mantle rested comfortably across his shoulders.
The crown upon his head was modest compared to his state crown, suitable for a visiting monarch.
The bedroom door opened quietly. Lilith entered. She wore a gown unlike anything he had seen before. Deep black silk shimmered beneath the morning light, woven with silver embroidery that resembled flowing shadows climbing upward from the hem.
Her royal crown rested naturally upon her dark hair. She looked every bit the sovereign she was. For a moment, he simply stared which she noticed.
"...What?"
"You look beautiful... stunning. I can’t even put words on it."
She blinked once. A faint warmth touched her usually composed expression.
"So do you."
He smiled.
"I don’t think anyone has ever called me beautiful before, it’s always handsome"
"Then today is a first."
A soft chirping interrupted them. The white fox bounded happily across the room before stopping between them.
Its sleek spring coat gleamed brilliantly beneath the sunlight pouring through the windows.
It looked from one monarch to the other before wagging its tail.
Atheline laughed.
"I think it approves."
Lilith crouched slightly, scratching beneath its chin.
"It approves of anyone willing to feed it."
The fox offered no argument.
A gentle knock sounded at the door.
"The ceremony will begin within the hour, Your Majesties."
"We’re coming."
She rose smoothly before offering him her hand. He accepted it without hesitation. Together, they left their chambers.
The palace itself had transformed overnight. Fresh flowers decorated nearly every hallway. Crystal lanterns reflected countless colors across the polished white floors.
Music drifted softly through the corridors as visiting nobles made their way toward the grand ceremonial gardens.
Atheline recognized many familiar faces.
Prince Lucifer raised a hand in greeting from across the corridor. Several Beastkin elders bowed respectfully. The Dwarven delegation admired the palace architecture without attempting to hide it.
Even the Human representatives, especially after what had transpired before, exchanged polite greetings. It felt... Wonderfully normal.
The ceremony itself would take place beneath the Great Canopy. An enormous open-air pavilion stood at the heart of the royal gardens where the branches of the World Tree naturally stretched overhead, creating a breathtaking ceiling of emerald leaves and shimmering silver light.
Rows upon rows of seats surrounded the central platform. Hundreds of nobles had already taken their places.
Beyond the pavilion, countless common citizens gathered outside the palace grounds where enchanted mirrors projected the ceremony for the entire capital to witness.
The Kingdom had spared no effort. Security, however, remained impossible to ignore.
Atheline quietly observed the layered defenses while walking toward the royal seating. Above the palace, a translucent dome shimmered faintly whenever sunlight struck its surface.
The barrier.
One of the oldest defensive enchantments remaining on the continent, built to protect the world tree. Dozens of royal manipulators continuously maintained it from hidden chambers beneath the palace.
Every entrance had been blessed by senior priests. Detection formations were woven beneath the stone pathways. Image crystals overlooked every major corridor and royal Knights stood watch in carefully planned positions.
Hidden among the guests, members of the Royal Intelligence Division blended seamlessly into the crowd.
Lilith followed his gaze.
"You’ve counted them."
"I couldn’t help it."
She looked upward.
"The palace has never been better protected."
He smiled.
"I was just thinking..."
She raised an eyebrow.
"...that this may be the safest place on the entire continent."
She gave him a long look.
"You’ve said something similar before."
"I have?"
"The day of our wedding."
"...Oh."
"You also said it when you were trying to convince me to let you come back"
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"When you put it like that..."
She sighed almost imperceptibly.
"Please refrain from declaring anything perfectly safe."
He laughed.
"I’ll try but don’t forget I was raised here."
Trumpets echoed throughout the gardens. Every conversation gradually faded. The High King entered first, accompanied by senior members of the royal family.
The entire audience rose respectfully.
Behind him walked the Crown Prince, followed by the High Elven Princess. She wore a flowing gown of silver and pale green that seemed almost woven from light itself.
Though composed, the slight nervousness visible in her smile made her appear wonderfully human. A moment later, her fiancé entered from the opposite side.
The young lord moved confidently despite the hundreds of eyes watching him. The recent tragedy that had placed his family’s responsibilities upon his shoulders had clearly matured him.
The High King stepped forward. His voice, strengthened by magic, carried effortlessly across the gardens.
"Today... we gather not merely to celebrate two individuals but to celebrate hope. Hope that our children shall inherit a future brighter than our own."
He looked across the assembled representatives of every race.
"We have endured war, loss, division, and fear. Yet despite all of it... We stand here together."
His gaze softened as he looked toward his daughter.
"May this union remind us that trust remains stronger than hatred."
A gentle applause spread throughout the gardens. Atheline smiled quietly. Beside him, Lilith watched the ceremony in silence. Her expression remained composed as always, yet he could tell, she genuinely admired moments like these. It reminded her of her own wedding.

Far beyond the palace walls... A lone gloved hand rested quietly against the shimmering surface of the ancient barrier surrounding the royal grounds.
Grey Aether flowed silently across invisible runes like ink spreading through clear water. The barrier, for the first time in centuries, trembled.
