Chapter 305: 305:Winter is coming to an end.

Winter continued quietly and the days settled into a comfortable rhythm, each one blending naturally into the next.

Every morning before sunrise, Atheline could be found somewhere within the palace grounds, either practicing archery beneath the falling snow or refining the control of his six elemental affinities.

Some mornings he trained alone, chasing an ideal only he could see. Other mornings the lilith joined him, correcting a stance here, offering a suggestion there, or simply pushing him until every muscle protested.

The System updated him only occasionally; twenty-five percent then twenty-six but the numbers rose painfully slowly.

Yet each increase came with noticeable changes. His recovery improved. His Aether flowed more smoothly. The oppressive feeling of the sealed EX-rank power gradually became less foreign, as though his body was slowly learning to coexist with it instead of resisting it.

He eventually stopped watching the percentage, instead, he focused on becoming stronger one day at a time.

His responsibilities as king became just as routine. Council meetings filled the mornings and petitions occupied the afternoons.

Reports from border forts, harvest assessments, winter supply routes, and trade negotiations all passed across his desk.

He no longer relied entirely on Lilith to answer every question. Sometimes she simply sat quietly beside him, allowing him to lead the discussions himself.

When Councillors presented problems, he listened carefully before asking questions rather than offering immediate solutions.

To his surprise, the councillors appreciated that approach. It reminded them that a king did not need to know everything. He only needed to know how to make wise decisions.

The friendship between Atheline and Simion deepened almost without either of them noticing. It began with training then lunch after training.

Eventually, they found themselves walking back from council meetings together, discussing everything from swordsmanship to books in the royal library.

Neither spoke much about politics outside official duties. Instead, they argued over whose elemental affinity was more versatile, compared hunting stories, and occasionally exchanged embarrassing tales from childhood.

Atheline learned that the noble had always struggled beneath the expectations of being the next Noble elder when he came of age.

The noble learned that becoming king had frightened Atheline far more than he had ever admitted publicly. Those conversations slowly replaced formality with familiarity , still, respect remained but so did laughter.

The white fox grew noticeably larger as the weeks passed. It had also become considerably more mischievous, especially after discovering it could use more magic than normal beasts.

One afternoon it froze an entire palace fountain simply because it discovered it enjoyed watching servants panic. Another day it proudly presented Lilith with a rabbit it had caught itself. The rabbit was still alive and was one of the decorative pets kept in the palace.

After several minutes of chaos, the palace gardeners successfully rescued it. Lilith sighed while Atheline struggled not to laugh.

"It was trying to help."

"So it seems."

The fooked entirely pleased with itself. Neither monarch had the heart to scold it for long.

Letters continued arriving from across the world. The High Elven Kingdom wrote regularly, informing them that preparations for the princess’s engagement ceremony were progressing smoothly.

Reports from the Demonic Continent confirmed that the royal token granting unrestricted travel had been fully prepared and put into immediate action.

The Beastkin Continent still struggled against occasional corrupted outbreaks along the Blood Ocean, though none had yet reached catastrophic levels.

Reports from Gladia kingdom showed the kingdom had bloomed even more under the new ruler and the people had come to accept the dark elven invasion.

Life continued and the world continued turning. The snow was slowly receding and winter was about to end. Everyone was waiting for that day in anticipation.

For the first time in many months, peace felt almost, ordinary. And before either of them truly realized how much time had passed, the palace steward arrived one snowy morning carrying a beautifully sealed invitation.

The High Elven royal crest shimmered in silver wax. The engagement ceremony... Was only two weeks away.

The last week of winter arrived almost without anyone noticing.

The endless white blanket that had covered the Dark Elven Kingdom for months was finally beginning to disappear. Around the capital, patches of dark earth peeked through the melting snow, while streams that had remained frozen throughout the season slowly regained their gentle flow.

The sharp, biting wind had softened into a cool breeze, carrying with it the faint scent of damp soil and fresh leaves.

Every morning, the palace gardeners could be seen clearing away the final piles of snow from the courtyards. Tiny green shoots had begun appearing beneath bushes that only weeks before had seemed completely lifeless.

Even the great black trees surrounding the royal palace showed signs of awakening, their silver-veined branches beginning to bud once more.

The season was changing, with it, so too was the kingdom.

Atheline stood upon the balcony outside their chambers with a warm cup of tea in his hands. The white fox sat comfortably on the stone railing, its thick winter coat making it resemble a small snowdrift despite the warming weather.

"It won’t be long before you lose that coat."

The fox looked back at him before tilting its head.

"You’ll probably become half your current size."

It responded by puffing itself up proudly, earning a quiet laugh from him. The balcony door slid open behind him. Lilith stepped outside carrying a folded document.

"You’ve already found today’s entertainment."

He glanced toward the fox.

"It believes it’s intimidating."

"It isn’t."

"I know."

The fox barked softly in protest. She crouched beside it, gently scratching beneath its chin.

"It seems winter suited it."

"It certainly enjoyed the snow."

She nodded.

"So did you."

"I did." He looked across the capital. "I’ve grown fond of this place."

She followed his gaze. The court bustled below despite the early hour. Merchants had reopened many outdoor stalls after weeks of keeping to enclosed markets.

Children no longer spent their mornings throwing snowballs but instead chased one another through muddy streets, their laughter carrying surprisingly far.

She smiled faintly.

"So have I."

He looked at her in surprise.

"You’ve always lived here."

"I have."

"But seeing it through someone else’s eyes..." She paused. "...has reminded me why I chose to protect it."

Neither spoke for a while; sometimes, silence carried more meaning than conversation ever could.
