Chapter 264: 264:Caught prey.
Atheline rose as well while Zelpher straightened, several intelligence officers prepared themselves.
Lilith looked toward them.
"Remain here."
The officers immediately stopped. Atheline almost laughed, lilith wasn’t bringing an arrest team, she was the arrest team.
A moment later darkness gathered beneath her feet. The familiar shadows expanded across the floor. Atheline stepped beside her and Zelpher followed.
The world vanished as darkness swallowed everything. Reality returned moments later. The three materialized inside a luxurious study.
Silence greeted them. The room smelled faintly of old books and expensive ink. A fire burned quietly in the hearth.
Several documents rested atop a polished desk, a half-finished cup of tea sat nearby, and seated calmly behind the desk was Councillor Renault himself.
For several seconds nobody moved. Councillor Renault stared at them, confusion in his gaze. Lilith stared back just as hard.
Atheline looked around while Zelpher quietly examined exits.
Councillor Renault placed the document he was holding down then slowly stood.
"Your Majesty?"
His confusion appeared genuine. Atheline almost admired the performance.
Lilith simply looked at him, with no anger or hostility, just a long look. Councillor Renault suddenly appeared uncomfortable. His instincts were telling him that something was wrong.
Lilith sighed, a small sigh, almost disappointed.
"Idiot."
Councillor Renault froze. The single word hit harder than any accusation.
Lilith shook her head then darkness erupted. The shadows beneath the room expanded instantly.
Councillor Renault’s eyes widened.
"What..."
He never finished. Shadow chains erupted from the floor, and his body froze. His Aether circulation was sealed and his voice taken. Within a second he was completely restrained.
Atheline winced, that had been efficient.
Councillor Renault looked utterly shocked. Lilith didn’t bother explaining. She had already concluded.
The shadow chains lifted him into the air. Councillor Renault struggled but nothing happened.
She turned away.
"Search everything."
Zelpher bowed.
"Immediately."
Atheline followed as the operation began. Within minutes the residence transformed into controlled chaos.
Shadows moved through hallways. Servants were gathered and detained. Rooms were secured. Every document was seized, the storage room opened and the secret compartment investigated.
Atheline discovered very quickly that dark elven noble houses contained far more hidden rooms than any sane architect would ever design.
Zelpher moved like a man possessed. Years of experience revealed themselves. Nothing escaped his notice; hidden ledgers, false walls, encrypted correspondence, financial records, and secret accounts. Every discovery painted a darker picture.
Hours passed.
Snow continued falling outside. Councillor Renault remained imprisoned within a containment room while the search continued.
Atheline eventually entered what appeared to be a private archive.
Zelpher was already there. Several intelligence officers sorted documents across large tables. Stacks continued growing.
Atheline picked up one of the reports then frowned.
"Wait."
Zelpher looked up. He flipped through several pages then several more. His expression slowly darkened.
"This isn’t related to the potion operation."
Zelpher nodded.
"No."
Atheline continued reading. He felt a chill gather as he continued through. There were political writings, manifestos, pamphlets, and meeting records.
Atheline looked toward Zelpher whose expression was also grim.
"We found those hidden behind a false wall."
Atheline opened another document then another. His eyes narrowed. He recognized some of the rhetoric, not personally but historically.
Lilith entered the room moments later. Zelpher immediately handed her one of the recovered books.
She opened it, read a single page then closed it. Silence settled over the archive.
Atheline watched her carefully. Lilith’s face revealed nothing, which was impressive. But her eyes had changed, they became very cold.
Zelpher finally spoke.
"We found the source."
Lilith looked at him gesturing for him to continue. He continued.
"The potions were only one operation... The larger connection is political."
The room became completely silent. Zelpher handed over another collection of papers. Lilith slowly and carefully examined them.
Atheline moved closer. The moment he saw it, he understood the rapidly freezing room. It was the remnants and the rebellion. This wasn’t a new organisation, but an old; one that should have died long ago.
The writings referred repeatedly to bloodline purity, ancient noble privilege, traditional succession rights, the superiority of certain families, and eventually Lilith herself.
Atheline’s expression darkened.
Low blood.
It was the same accusation again and again. This was the nonsense she almost lost her life to and had been forced into a rebellion centuries ago.
It was the same ideology that had supported her brother and the same movement that had nearly fractured the kingdom.
Lilith continued reading. The room remained silent. Zelpher finally spoke.
"We believe they’re remnants."
Lilith nodded once.
"I know."
Atheline looked toward her but her gaze remained fixed on the documents. Years ago she had led the opposition, after her brother had gathered supporters among conservative noble families and tried to kill anyone he considered to be tainted.
A lot of people had died in his bloodline crusade. She had had enough of running away and had gotten enough support to challenge him.
He had lost miserably. Most had assumed the movement died with him, but she knew how hard it was to uproot them. And it seemed they had managed to integrate into her government while she was busy chasing their trail in another direction.
Zelpher opened another folder.
"Councillor Renault financed them."
And opened another.
"He sheltered surviving members."
Then another.
"He coordinated communication."
Atheline could see the strain in his hand as he opened another report.
"He funded recruitments."
Atheline slowly exhaled. This wasn’t merely sympathy or ideological support. Councillor Renault had become one of their leaders, perhaps their primary leader.
Lilith finally closed the folder, the sound echoed through the room. Everyone became very still.
Zelpher spoke carefully.
"There is more."
She looked up. Zelpher hesitated which was very rare for him. Then he continued.
"We found evidence suggesting you already suspected him years ago."
Atheline frowned. Lilith remained silent. Zelpher produced an older report, one dating back several years. She examined it then remembered.
Atheline saw recognition appear immediately.
Zelpher continued.
"There were warning signs but nothing concrete."
Lilith stared at the report then nodded slowly. She remembered. She had just managed to stabilize the kingdom then after all the turmoil.
She had noticed inconsistencies; small things, odd political connections, and questionable meetings. Nothing enough to justify action or execution. And so she had done nothing.
Zelpher lowered his voice slightly.
"You spared him because of his bloodline."
