Chapter 204: Chapter 204: The Xenophage Scourge, Eradicating the Swarm
Sector Delta-Nine of the Kentari Ringworld was a sprawling, metallic nightmare.
The dark green, fleshy webbing of the Xenophage completely coated the towering skyscrapers and the cracked durasteel highways. The air was thick with the sickeningly sweet smell of biological rot and the deafening, continuous clicking of millions of insectoid legs.
Lucifer strode down the center of a wide, ruined avenue.
The Warlord didn’t bother trying to sneak. He didn’t use stealth magic. He walked with heavy, deliberate steps, the ruby-red Blade of Ruin resting casually on his shoulder. His dark leather armor absorbed the dim, red light of the dying sun above.
The 30% stat suppression from the Precursor Military Trial was a noticeable drag on his movements. It felt like walking through waist-deep water. His Void Arcanist mana regenerated slower. His physical strikes required more effort.
But it didn’t matter. The math was still overwhelmingly in his favor.
A massive, multi-story building to his right suddenly groaned. The metal siding blew outward, showering the street in glass and steel.
A torrent of Xenophage Warriors poured out of the breach.
They looked like a waterfall of mottled green and black chitin. Thousands of the wolf-sized, scythe-legged monsters cascaded down the side of the building, shrieking in mindless, ravenous hunger. They hit the durasteel street and instantly swarmed toward Lucifer.
[System Warning: Hostile Swarm Engaged!]
[Entity: Xenophage Warrior (Level 55)]
[Quantity: 8,000+]
Lucifer didn’t stop walking. He didn’t raise his sword.
He lifted his left hand, the Gauntlet of the Void King crackling with suppressed black lightning.
"Spatial Rend," Lucifer murmured quietly.
He didn’t target a specific monster. He targeted the space directly in front of the charging swarm. He violently twisted his wrist, tearing a massive, localized rift in the fabric of the Ringworld’s artificial gravity.
The front line of the Xenophage charge hit the rift.
It was like running into an invisible meat grinder. The spatial distortion instantly shredded the first thousand bugs, ripping their chitinous armor and green blood into a fine, expanding mist.
[Passive Triggered: The Reaper’s Touch.]
The five percent chance of instant erasure activated.
It didn’t just delete a few bugs. Because Lucifer was hitting thousands of targets simultaneously with the spatial tear, the mathematical probability triggered hundreds of times in a single second.
Entire chunks of the charging swarm simply vanished.
There was no explosion. There was no splatter of blood. One second, a massive, screeching Xenophage Warrior was leaping over a destroyed hover-car; the next second, the air was entirely empty. The absolute, conceptual erasure provided by the Goddess of Death was terrifyingly efficient.
Lucifer dropped his hand, letting the spatial tear close.
The surviving bugs didn’t hesitate. They scrambled over the empty spaces left by their deleted comrades, charging forward with suicidal determination.
"Persistent little roaches," Lucifer muttered dryly.
He gripped his longsword with both hands and activated Zephyr’s Grace. The speed emblem fought against the 30% suppression, but it still launched him forward fast enough to blur.
Lucifer met the swarm head-on.
The Blade of Ruin flashed in a brutal, horizontal arc. The True Damage cleaved through the thick green armor of a dozen Warriors, slicing them cleanly in half. He spun, driving his iron-clad boot into the chest of a leaping bug, crushing its thorax before decapitating three more with a backhanded swing.
The melee was a chaotic, bloody dance. Lucifer moved flawlessly, his Void Arcanist core predicting the incoming strikes.
But the sheer volume of the swarm was overwhelming.
"Commander," Celeste’s voice crackled through the comms rune. The connection was slightly garbled by the dense, biological interference of the Xenophage webbing. "We have engaged the western commercial district. It’s a mess over here."
"Report, Celeste," Lucifer ordered, slicing a bug in half and side-stepping a scythe strike.
"The webbing is absorbing standard aether-fire," the High Ranger shouted over the sound of intense, rapid bowstrings snapping. "I have the Star-Kissed Elves positioned on the rooftops, but the sheer number of targets is draining their quivers. We are dropping thousands, but they are reproducing faster than we can shoot them. The Hives are actively spawning reinforcements mid-battle."
"They are an adaptive swarm," Lucifer stated smoothly, punching a localized Gravity Crush into the center of a dense cluster of bugs, crushing fifty of them into a green paste. "Don’t fight the infantry. Focus entirely on the massive, pulsing red thermal structures. Destroy the Hives. The swarm will lose cohesion without the central nodes."
"Understood," Celeste confirmed. "Elves! Shift targets! Bring down those fleshy towers!"
Lucifer cut the connection.
He turned his attention back to his own sector. The tactical map in his system interface showed a massive, towering red marker just three blocks away. It was the first of the five Primary Hives in the southern command center.
"Isolde," Lucifer called out over the link.
"The eastern residential sector is burning, Warlord," the Winter Sovereign hissed proudly. The sound of massive, booming draconic roars echoed in the background. "My brood is freezing the bugs solid. They shatter like cheap glass under our claws."
"Are they spawning reinforcements?" Lucifer asked.
"Not anymore," Isolde laughed cruelly. "I froze the spawning vents of two Hives already. The absolute zero magic prevents the biological matter from gestating. We are systematically dismantling their nests."
"Good," Lucifer said. "Keep the pressure up."
He switched the channel one last time.
"Elara," Lucifer ordered.
"The northern industrial zone is a slaughterhouse, Lucifer," the Twilight Sovereign reported smoothly. The rhythmic, deafening thud of thousands of iron hooves hitting durasteel vibrated through the comms. "The Dragoons are flawless. The Xenophage cannot pierce the Star-Metal plating. The bugs are throwing themselves against the machines and getting crushed into paste."
"Push for the Hives," Lucifer commanded.
"We are already engaging the first one," Elara confirmed. "The aether-cannons are chewing through the biological armor. It will fall in minutes."
Lucifer closed the comms interface.
His commanders were operating perfectly. The decision to split the forces had been absolute tactical perfection. The Xenophage swarm thrived on overwhelming single points of defense with infinite numbers. By striking all twenty Hives across four different sectors simultaneously, Lucifer forced the swarm to divide its attention and its reinforcements.
He cleared the remaining bugs in the avenue with a final, wide arc of his True Damage blade.
Lucifer sheathed his sword. The ruby-red light dimmed slightly.
He walked down the street, turning a corner onto a massive, open square that used to be a planetary transit hub.
In the center of the square sat the Primary Hive.
It was a colossal, grotesque structure of pulsating, dark green flesh and thick, black resin. It towered fifty feet high, looking like a massive, mutated termite mound. Dozens of large, fleshy vents lined the sides of the structure, constantly twitching and oozing thick, corrosive slime.
As Lucifer watched, one of the vents dilated. A fully formed, screaming Xenophage Warrior was violently expelled from the opening, tumbling into the green slime before shaking itself off and turning its blind maw toward the Warlord.
[System Warning: Primary Hive Engaged!]
[Target: Xenophage Spawning Node (Level 60 - Siege Structure)]
[Status: Actively Gestating.]
"That is disgustingly efficient," Lucifer noted dryly.
He didn’t draw his sword. He didn’t want to spend twenty minutes hacking through fifty feet of highly regenerative, biological armor while the Hive spit bugs at him.
He needed high-yield demolition.
Lucifer opened his Dimensional Vault.
He bypassed the Cataclysm Orbs and the Tears of Solaris. Those were massive, area-of-effect nukes. He needed something localized and piercing to hit the core of the Hive without vaporizing the entire city block.
He pulled out the Star-Shatter Cannon.
The heavy, thirty-foot-long artillery piece dropped onto the cracked durasteel street with a heavy THUD. The blue runes along the Star-Metal barrel glowed brightly in the dim red light of the dying sun above.
Lucifer didn’t have a crew to man the heavy weapon. He didn’t need one.
He grabbed the heavy iron carriage and manually pivoted the massive cannon, aiming the barrel directly at the center of the pulsating Primary Hive fifty yards away.
He reached back into his vault and pulled out a single, glowing blue refined mana crystal.
It wasn’t a standard crystal. It was one of the hyper-condensed, multiplied crystals he had created using the Apex Multiplier during the defense of the hollow core. It hummed with intense, volatile aether-energy.
Lucifer hauled open the heavy breech of the cannon and shoved the crystal inside. He slammed the lock shut.
The newly spawned Xenophage Warriors in the plaza shrieked, realizing the threat. A dozen of the wolf-sized bugs charged the cannon, attempting to swarm Lucifer before he could fire.
Lucifer didn’t even look at them.
"System. Apply the Apex Multiplier to the firing sequence," Lucifer commanded smoothly. "Multiply the projectile density. Ten thousand times."
[Divine Talent: Apex Multiplier Activated!]
[Applying 10,000x multiplier to Aether-Blast Density...]
[Warning: Weapon Recoil may exceed structural limits under 30% Stat Suppression.]
Lucifer braced his heavy iron boots against the durasteel street. He grabbed the firing lever with his right hand, the Gauntlet of the Void King crackling with black lightning to absorb the physical shock.
He pulled the lever.
The Star-Shatter Cannon roared.
It was a deafening, localized thunderclap. A single, blinding beam of concentrated blue aether-energy erupted from the barrel. The beam was not wide; it was only a few inches thick. But the density of the magic was absolute.
The blue laser punched straight through the charging Xenophage Warriors, vaporizing them instantly.
The beam hit the center of the Primary Hive.
The thick, highly regenerative biological armor of the structure offered absolutely zero resistance. The multiplied aether-blast drilled a perfectly round, cauterized hole straight through the fleshy wall, piercing deep into the central gestation core of the Hive.
The massive structure shuddered violently.
The fleshy vents stopped twitching. The pulsing green light inside the Hive flickered and died.
A muffled, concussive explosion echoed from deep inside the biological tower. The entire fifty-foot structure slumped inward, collapsing into a massive, smoking pile of burnt green sludge and shattered black resin.
[System: Primary Hive Destroyed!]
[Objective Progress: 1 / 20 Hives Eliminated.]
Lucifer let go of the firing lever. The Star-Shatter Cannon smoked heavily, the blue runes dimming as the weapon cooled down.
"One down," Lucifer muttered, swiping the system notification away.
He didn’t celebrate. He grabbed the heavy iron carriage of the cannon, hauling the massive artillery piece back into his Dimensional Vault.
He tapped his comms rune.
"Status," Lucifer demanded.
"Three Hives destroyed in the northern sector, Warlord," Elara reported, the sound of heavy metal crushing bone echoing over the link. "The Dragoons are repositioning for the final two."
"Two Hives frozen and shattered in the east," Isolde hissed proudly.
"Four Hives burned in the west," Celeste added, her voice tight with exertion. "The Elves are holding the high ground. We are moving on the final target."
"Excellent," Lucifer said smoothly. He looked down the ruined avenue toward the remaining four red thermal markers on his tactical map. "Maintain the pace. I want this sector cleared before the sun sets."
He drew the Blade of Ruin. The ruby-red sword pulsed eagerly. The Warlord walked into the dark, ready to finish the extermination.
