Chapter 111: What we leave behind
Ru Yi hadn’t bothered to answer Yexue’s question. She only pulled her forward, stopping short when the main door to the house opened and Shen Lieyin stepped out with her new haircut.
Lieyin stood there, framed by the doorway, as though light itself had paused around her. Her long blonde hair was gone. Or rather, transformed.
What had once fallen long and controlled now ended in uneven strands that framed her ears, neck, sharp and unrestrained.
The hair cut was not careful in the traditional sense, nor was it polished. It looked like it had been done without hesitation, without regret, each shortened piece revealing more of the intensity that had always been present in Lieyin.
It suited her, Ru Yi noted.
No– it made her impossible to ignore.
Ru Yi’s gaze lingered a fraction too long.
The new length exposed the line of Lieyin’s jaw more clearly, the quiet tension she carried in the set of her shoulders, the stillness that never meant calm.
There was striking in the way the shorter strands moved when she stepped forward, something that felt sharper, closer to the truth of who she was.
For a brief unguarded moment, Ru Yi thought of Han Shuying. Not because they were the same—but because that same sense of danger, of clarity, lived in both of them now. There was no softness for them to hide behind.
"What is it?" Lieyin asked, her voice even, though her eyes had already caught the lingering look.
Ru Yi blinked, returning to herself. "Nothing," she said, though the answer came a bit too late to be convincing.
Lieyin studied for a breath, then said nothing more. But someone else had noticed the exchange.
Yexue’s gaze shifted between them, sharp and quiet, catching what neither of them voiced. Her expression tightened ever so slightly before she took a hold of Ru Yi’s wrist.
"Let’s go in. I need you to cut my hair for me." She gave Lieyin a brief glance as they entered the house. "I don’t want it to be sloppy like hers."
Ru Yi frowned but allowed herself to be pulled inside, away from the freezing cold and Lieyin’s intense presence.
Yexue shut the door behind them with a loud bang, then looked at Ru Yi with an accusing gaze. "You were staring at her."
"I was not," Ru Yi replied automatically.
"You were." Yexue tried to remain calm but her voice came out with a sharp edge in it. "You’re attracted to her, aren’t you? I mean the three of us look alike."
"Yexue..."
"I want you to love only me." The desperation Yexue felt was way beyond her years. "I’ve always had to share everything with my sisters while growing up. But you..." she brushed Ru Yi’s cheek with the pad of her thumb. "I want you all to myself."
Ru Yi said nothing when Yexue’s head fell to her shoulder.
"Am I being greedy?"
Ru Yi rubbed her back slowly. "No, you’re not. Let’s go cut your hair. Qingyue won’t like it if we don’t finish on time."
That got Yexue moving but it did not bring the light back in her eyes.

By the time they’d gathered their things, the village had begun to stir with the knowledge of their departure.
Ru Yi had stayed true to the robes she had been wearing, while the triplets traded theirs for narrow practical pants tucked into their boots.
With their hair cut short and their figures hidden beneath layered cloth and belts, there was little left of the princesses they once were—only three quiet figures who could pass without notice.
Madam Lin pulled Ru Yi aside as the sisters gathered the last of their supplies. They’d barely spoken a word to each other after she’d broken down in front of her.
"You’re leaving today." Her tone was soft and sad. "I wish we had more time together. There are things I would’ve loved to talk about."
Ru Yi had a small smile on her face. "Maybe if fate lets it, we’ll cross paths again. I’m just happy you’re fully recovered." She looked in the direction of the room. "I know your daughter will gain consciousness soon, Qingyue said she was fully healed on the inside."
Madam Lin nodded her head. "She has been most kind to me and my daughter."
"That’s the type of person she is. Always making sure that others are well taken care of." Her voice was filled with admiration. "For what it’s worth, I’ll miss this place."
Madam Lin took a slow breath, as though steadying herself. "I don’t know how to thank you," she admitted. "What you’ve done for me, what you’ve done for Tiancheng..."
"You don’t need to repay anything," Ru Yi said. "Just take care of yourself and your daughter. That is all I ask."
Madam Lin studied the girl in front of her for a moment, then nodded slowly, choosing to trust the certainty of her words.
"I will always remember what you’ve done for me," she said quietly.
Ru Yi did not respond to that. Some things did not need answers.
A small movement at her side drew her attention downward. Xiao Yi stood there, just within arms reach.
He had always been quiet, watchful and withdrawn. But this time he did not retreat under her gaze. Instead, he remained where he was, his small hand tightening slightly at his side.
Ru Yi crouched down to meet him. "Did you come to say goodbye?" she asked, patting his hair in a loving manner. She’d truly grown fond of the little boy.
Xiao Yi nodded.
"Oh my, I’ll miss you. Xiao Yi."
After a moment his lips parted. "Don’t go..." The words were quiet, rough with disuse, as though they had to push past something that had been long sealed shut.
Ru Yi froze.
Behind her, she heard Madam Xiao draw in a sharp breath. The boy had never spoken since the day he saved her so they all assumed he was mute.
Ru Yi did not look away. For a moment she considered what to say. Then she reached out and rested her hand gently on his head.
"I have to," she said softly, her chest tightening. "But that doesn’t mean we won’t meet again."
He hesitated, searching her face.
Then nodded with quiet resolve.
They’d been so absorbed in the little boy who was speaking for the first time, that no one noticed the twitch in a little girl’s fingers. She was yet to wake up, but the shadow curling around her wrist was drawing her back to life.
