Chapter 1459: An Anomaly

Erend let out another long sigh. When Veyrun said that every Dragonborn who had mastered the Black Rage had eventually disappeared from history, only one possibility came to his mind. Perhaps they had never truly mastered it at all. Perhaps they had eventually been consumed by it. Or maybe they had chosen death over living with a rage powerful enough to destroy everything around them.

Honestly, Erend could not blame them. If one day he could no longer control the Black Rage after it grew stronger, then perhaps the only choice left would be to end his own life before he became a bringer of destruction.

He only hoped it would never come to that.

"I can see that you’re troubled," Veyrun said.

"Yeah?" Erend replied with a sarcastic smile. "You think so? I’m just considering the only possible choice I might have if the Black Rage keeps consuming me."

"You intend to kill yourself."

"...Yes."

The answer came heavily.

Erend leaned back and looked toward the ceiling. His eyes followed the endless black grids stretching across the white surface above him. Everything was perfectly symmetrical, as though this place had been built entirely from numbers and calculations.

"Or perhaps not, Erend," Veyrun said.

Erend immediately looked back at him and frowned.

He could not read Veyrun’s expression. His face consisted only of white light, and his body barely moved. Despite possessing unimaginable authority over the System, he was still, at his core, a program.

"What do you mean?" Erend asked. "Do you actually have a solution?"

"This situation has never existed before," Veyrun replied. "You are a Dragonborn created through the System itself. You are part of the Creator’s own design. That means the historical data we possess may not fully apply to you."

He paused briefly before continuing.

"You have already become something new. Therefore... perhaps you are also capable of creating something new."

Erend remained silent. The words slowly settled inside his mind before his eyes gradually widened.

Veyrun was right. He was an anomaly.

There was no reason to assume he had to follow the same path as every Dragonborn before him.

He had already accomplished things that ordinary Dragonborn could never achieve. He possessed two Dragon powers within a single body. He carried the Dungeon World inside him and could continue growing stronger without the natural limitations of his race.

Perhaps... Perhaps the Black Rage could become another exception.

Maybe there really was a way to turn it into an advantage instead of allowing it to become the force that destroyed him.

"I think... I know what I have to do, Veyrun," Erend said.

Veyrun nodded.

"And I’ll help you as much as I can. But understand that my capabilities are limited. There are many responsibilities I must continue handling."

"I know," Erend replied. "Just do what you can. Don’t push yourself."

He understood better than anyone that the Creator’s disappearance had left an enormous burden behind. As the administrator of the System, Veyrun undoubtedly had countless duties that demanded his attention.

"For now," Erend continued, "can you at least tell me where I should begin? How do I start taming the Black Rage?"

"You must confront the Rage within your unconscious mind," Veyrun answered. "Then you must discover the source that feeds it. Once you understand it, reshape it into something more benevolent."

Erend smiled weakly before letting out another sigh.

"That sounds much easier to say than to actually do."

"Yes," Veyrun admitted. "The process will be extremely difficult. But if you succeed, the Black Rage may become your greatest strength rather than your greatest weakness."

Erend nodded several times.

For the first time since the battle, he allowed himself to imagine a future where the Black Rage no longer haunted every step of his life.

Eventually, he rose from the couch of light.

After speaking with Veyrun, the weight inside his mind had become noticeably lighter.

"Thank you, Veyrun," Erend said sincerely. "You’ve helped me more than you know."

"I merely did what I could," Veyrun replied. "I’m glad it was enough to help."

"I should go now."

Veyrun gave a small nod.

Moments later, the endless white room dissolved into countless particles of light. The grids faded one by one until everything disappeared into brilliance.

Erend slowly opened his eyes. The familiar ceiling of Leonora’s royal infirmary came into view once again.

He knew he could not remain lying there any longer. There was simply no time. No one knew when the next danger would arrive, and after everything that had happened, he refused to waste even a single moment.

Slowly he pushed himself into a sitting position before carefully placing both feet on the floor. Pain immediately spread throughout his body. Even so, it remained tolerable. His injuries no longer prevented him from moving.

He stood up cautiously and took a few slow steps across the infirmary.

His gaze drifted toward the nearby beds where Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven still lay unconscious. Healing formations continued glowing softly around them while faint currents of Magic flowed through their bodies.

Erend quietly observed them for a moment. His own recovery had progressed much faster than theirs. Although all four of them had fought the same battle, he had awakened first and could already walk on his own.

Another reminder that he truly was an anomaly, even among Dragonborn.

Without disturbing anyone, Erend quietly left the infirmary.

As soon as he stepped into the palace corridor, one of the healers noticed him and hurried over with obvious concern.

"Lord Erend, you shouldn’t be walking yet," she said. "Your injuries still require more rest."

Erend gave her a reassuring smile. "I’m fine. I just need some fresh air and a little time to think."

The healer hesitated, clearly unconvinced. She examined him for several moments before finally letting out a helpless sigh. "...Please don’t overexert yourself."

"I won’t."

With that, Erend continued walking through the royal palace.

The palace of Leonora remained as magnificent as ever despite the recent invasion. Tall marble pillars lined the spacious hallways while elegant arches connected one wing to another. Large windows allowed warm sunlight to pour into the corridors, illuminating intricate carvings and polished stone floors.

Although many sections still bore cracks from the battle and workers could be seen repairing damaged walls and shattered decorations, the palace itself remained standing proudly.

The quiet atmosphere felt strangely comforting after everything he had experienced.

Erend wandered aimlessly until he eventually discovered a small garden tucked away behind one of the palace wings.

Colorful flowers still bloomed beneath the morning light, though signs of the invasion remained visible.

Several flowerbeds had been crushed, broken branches lay scattered across the ground, and one corner of the stone pathway had partially collapsed. But the garden had survived remarkably well.

The gentle fragrance of flowers drifted through the air, carried by a cool breeze that made the leaves sway softly.

Erend slowly walked toward a wooden bench beneath a large flowering tree before lowering himself onto it, and simply sat there in silence.

Not long after, Archmage Velrion came flying down from the air.
